Kathryn Lancioni, Presenting Perfection will discuss some ways to help your teen/tween transition back to the classroom. We'll review some basic tips for making solid first-day impressions and ways to reconnect with friends after months apart.

“Some children have thrived with online learning, and some have shut down and disconnected,” says Jessica Bush of Tutor Doctor of North Jersey. She shares with us how we can best support those kids who will be anxious returning to in-person school and being away from their family, vs those kids who are eager to get back and see their friends, but may be fearful in other ways. The transition will be a challenge whether you have introverted child, or a highly social child. Most important, says Jessica, is to validate their feelings and lead with calmness. She will share with us ways to best navigate this transition.

Leveraging Universal Design in Remote Learning

The workshop will discuss universal design and differentiation in a remote learning environment. Participants will have the opportunity to explore techniques and resources, as well as participate in peer discourse on the subject. The goal of these techniques is to mitigate the communication interruptions students’ experiences as they move between remote and face-to-face learning experiences.

Amy is a K-12 educator working in the field of educational technology and is currently an instructional technology coach. She also works for NJCU and Drew as an adjunct professor. Areas of research and advocacy include individualized learning, UDL, co-teaching, professional development, and transitional services into college.

Yelena is the Assistant Director of Education Computing Technology at Essex County College. Her research interests include the implementation and management of education technology, particularly the use of non-institutional resources, and students' digital rights.

There has been a big question about how to utilize paraprofessionals during remote/hybrid learning. These individuals sometimes referred to as educational assistants or aides in the classroom are essential to the special education population. But how are they being used? Are they being respected or thrown to the side? It seems every district and even every school handles this situation differently. Join us to try to help us solve some of these pervasive issues that existed even before COVID but now are especially apparent.

Bio: Rebecca Muller is a dedicated special education teacher hoping to connect people and help make positive changes for underserved populations of students. She holds her Master's Degree in Special Education from Rowan University and an Educational Leadership certificate from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, she teaches high school mathematics and helps juniors and seniors transition to their lives post-high school.

Bio: Debi Vesper has been a practicing School Psychologist in New Jersey for 21 years. She earned her Masters Degree and School Psychology Certification from Rowan University and obtained a Supervisor Certification from Seton Hall University. She is currently pursuing her doctoral degree at Delaware Valley University. Debi has experience working with students with a variety of disabilities from ages 3 through 21, working in both public and private settings, as well as with children of military families. As a student advocate and parent supporter, Debi believes all children can learn when provided with the right opportunities.

        Recognizing and Understanding Self-Harm and Suicidal Ideation in Teens

Suicide has risen to the 2nd leading cause of death among 10-34 year-olds in the United States, according to the CDC (2019). Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), is a strong risk factor for suicide attempts. NSSI and suicidal ideation in teenagers can elicit fear in families and school staff. At the same time, helping the adults in teenagers' lives to understand the implications of these behaviors and how to connect teens to proper care can make a difference in their lives. This workshop aims to provide a brief overview of NSSI and suicidal ideation, including how they present, knowledge of different functions of these behaviors, and questions which can be asked to help assess for non suicidal/suicidal intent. Participants will gain knowledge of interventions for these difficulties and ways to help connect adolescents to treatment. The intended audience for this workshop includes parents/caregivers as well as school-based staff, including teachers, counselors, and administrators.

Julia Brillante, PsyD, specializes in working with youth and families who struggle with depression, anxiety, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicidal ideation, and tic disorders. Dr. Brillante uses evidence-based techniques, coupled with a compassionate and collaborative approach that helps individuals face challenges, identify strengths and supports, and build lives worth living. She has expertise in both DBT and cognitive-behavioral therapy, and extensive training in interpersonal psychotherapy for those with depression. Dr. Brillante is a member of the Suicide & Self-Injury Special Interest group at Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) and has co-authored publications on NSSI in adolescents and young adults. She is passionate about addressing mental health disparities related to psychosocial stressors, race, and cultural identity, and is dedicated to bringing this commitment to support the youth, young adults, and families with whom she works.

In this webinar, we will explore the use of the Developmental, Individual-differences, Relationship-based model (DIR ®) in facilitating healthy development. There will be a specific focus on regulation, stress states, and trauma that can interfere with the ability of children with special needs to be ready to learn. Current research will be shared that will illuminate the powerful impact that a developmental-based approach to intervention has on the social-emotional growth of children with autism. We will explore how a DIR-based team approach can empower families and collaborate with educators to reach beyond behavioral modification to help children achieve higher levels of growth and independence. We will also discuss the recent changes in Medicaid Autism services in the State of New Jersey, which now includes Developmental Interventions as an option. This webinar is ideal for anyone who is interested in learning more about a developmental approach (DIR ®).

Dr. Faith Thayer is an Expert Training Leader & DIR Floortime® Provider; Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC); Registered, Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC); and Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT). Currently she lectures in the School of Psychology and Counseling at Caldwell University (NJ). Formerly she was an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Program of Special Education at Daemen College TTI (NY). Her other previous positions include Director of Student Programing at the Atlas Foundation for Autism (NY); Director of Mental Health and DIR Floortime® at the Imagine Academy for Autism (NY), and Director of the Creative Arts Therapy Center and Overnight Camps for the Connecticut Institute for the Blind/Oak Hill (CT). She is the lead author of the recently published study “An Evaluation of a Developmental Individual-differences Relationship-based (DIR®) Creative Arts Therapies Program for Children with Autism” (Arts & Psychotherapy, 2021).

Natalie Kitts is passionate about using scientific evidence-based approaches to help kids, families, and adults live well-balanced lives. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s of Science in Occupational therapy from Kean University. As a licensed occupational therapist she has expertise working in early intervention, school-based practice, parent coaching, and private practice. She is a lifelong learner and has extensive continuing education including advanced training in Sensory Integration Theory (SIPT) and Intervention, including STAR SI proficiency, and has earned a Fellows Certificate in the DIR-Floortime Model and Foundational Capacities for Development (DIR-FCD).

If you have a student or a child who is frequently distracted, constantly moving around, or unable to wait their turn, you may be concerned about attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although ADHD is a well-known diagnosis, many may not truly understand the complexities of the different subtypes. In addition, it can be difficult to understand why individuals struggle across a variety of domains.There are common misperceptions that are easily confused with actual diagnostic criteria. Further, it can be difficult to understand how to help children and adolescents with this diagnosis. This workshop is designed for individuals who are interested in learning about the diagnosis of ADHD, clinical interventions, and academic accommodations. Participants will be provided with an overview of the diagnosis, the different subtypes and will also learn about the evidence-based interventions. Finally, recommendations for academic accommodations will be discussed.

The P.O.W.E.R. Solving protocol can help students put problems into words, identify and describe their feelings, focus on appropriate solutions, and evaluate their plan of action. Problem-solving skills are scaffolded and modeled in a systematic fashion. Helpful visuals are incorporated to help teach students the abstract skills of regulating emotions and behaviors. Problem-solving is a complex, but necessary skill that needs to be part of an individual's learning path.

Bio:

Leah Battillo is a special education teacher of 7 years & a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA). She studied Elementary Education & Linguistics, and concentrated in Special Education & English as a Second Language. She was given the Presidential Award at Gordon College, which is awarded to one student annually who has made significant contributions to the college & the community. In 2017, she received her masters in applied behavior analysis with an emphasis in autism from Ball State University. She was the founder of Beyond Disabilities week at Gordon College, and spent the day with Temple Grandin. She was the project coordinator & current team member for the internationally-recognized Accessible Icon Project. She is currently a special needs consultant in her community & is currently on the board of directors for Kupenda, an international non-profit that partners with communities to provide disability awareness, education, & medical assistance. In the midst of a year wrought with loss and hardships including the global COVID-19 pandemic, many are struggling even more with how and when to implement self-care. This workshop aims to teach and apply skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as a form of self-care that can be used in everyday life. Although self-care looks different for everyone, participants will learn how to use DBT’s acceptance skills (e.g., self-validation, mindfulness, radical acceptance) and distress tolerance skills (e.g., DISTRACT skills, self-soothe) to cope with stressors where there may not be an immediate solution. This workshop is developed for parents/caregivers and school-based staff who are coping with caring for themselves at the same time as they care for their children and students.

        In These Uncertain Times: Returning to School in an Age of Anxiety

While none of us truly know how it will be for our children when they return to school this fall , there are lessons that we can take from the experiences of children returning to school after other significant societal disruptions, such as after the 9/11 terrorist attack. In this talk, we will examine the long-term psychological experience of children during episodes of societal disruption, including factors that are associated with a higher degree of symptoms, as well as things that schools and others can do to try and ensure better outcomes. We will cover important concepts such as psychological triage and other effective interventions that can support children who are struggling emotionally.

Bio:

Doctor Deibler holds a master’s degree in School Psychology, and a doctorate in Clinical Psychology, and he specializes in clinical diagnostic work and therapeutic services for children with severe mental illness. Doctor Deibler has been a school psychologist for 29 years and has worked in a variety of settings serving children with mental health needs. These include, public and private schools, self contained special education facilities, residential treatment facilities, and psychiatric inpatient and outpatient hospital programs. He’s currently employed by the Educational Services Unit of the Burlington County Special Services School District. The Burlington County Special Services School District educates students with special needs from across Burlington County in order to enable each student to reach their fullest potential.

Stefanie Babits joined SPAN in 2017 as a Parent Group Specialist on the START- Engaging Parents of Students with Disabilities Project. Stefanie provides supports to Special Education Parent Advisory Groups. She provides workshops on parent involvement in the IEP process and provides guidance on inclusion and family-centered principles and practices. Stefanie is also an Early Childhood Inclusion Coordinator on the New Jersey Inclusive Child Care Project. In her role, she provides parent trainings to families of children ages birth-8 years old. Prior to joining SPAN, Stefanie spent 20 years as a Human Resources professional working across various industries including healthcare, IT, and retail. Stefanie holds her BA degree in Human Resources Administration and Spanish from Muhlenberg College.

Nicole Harris is an Educator and Advocate in Early Childhood care and education. Nicole has used her educational background in Early Childhood Development and Psychology to build her Family childcare business of 23 yrs. Her experiences of being a wife, and mother of 5 children, including a child with Down Syndrome, has created a path and passion for the Special need population and immediate inclusive change. Nicole is active in her community, county, and state council programs as Volunteer for active change in family and excellence in education. Nicole is currently working with SPAN'S NJ Inclusive Care Project to support Family Childcare and Daycare Centers along NJOOL to train and educate on Quality Inclusive Care.

Bruce Preston has served as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Personnel for Howell Township Public Schools for the past six years. As a high school Special Needs teacher focused on Mathematics and Social Studies instruction, Mr. Preston was the Most Innovative Teacher of the Year as selected by his peers.  After earning his MA in Ed. Leadership from The College of New Jersey, Mr. Preston served as the Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction, all subjects, for a K-12 school district.  After three years, Mr. Preston transitioned to the role of Shared Director of Curriculum for four different NJ school districts.  He is a founding member & current advisor to the Multi-County Curriculum Consortium. Dr. Michael Gaskell is the Principal of Hammarskjold Middle School in East Brunswick, NJ since 2006, following experience as a special educator and assistant principal in Paramus, NJ. Dr. Gaskell continues to model the pursuit of lifelong learning as he serves as a mentor to new principals in other schools and districts through the New Jersey Leaders to Leaders program. Bios:

Deborah Lynam is the Director of Partnerships & Engagement at AIM Institute for Learning & Research and serves as a board member for the National Center on Improving Literacy’s Family Engagement Advisory Board. She previously served as chair of the NJ State Special Education Advisory Council and was a member of the NJ DOE Dyslexia Handbook Committee. Deborah has worked as a Family Resource Specialist for New Jersey’s Parent Training & Information Center and is the parent of three children, two with dyslexia. Deborah is a certified Orton-Gillingham Teacher and a board member for the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council. She was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by the NJ Branch of the International Dyslexia Association in 2013 and is a founding member of Decoding Dyslexia–NJ.

Alison Pankowski completed her undergraduate work in Deaf Education and Elementary Education at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. She received her Master in Education degree in Special Education from Rutgers University. Mrs. Pankowski completed her post-graduate work at The College of New Jersey to obtain her Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDTC) certificate. She has worked in the special education field since 1995 in New Jersey public schools. During that time she has held a variety of positions including in-class support co-teacher, resource center instructor, self-contained teacher, LDTC and Reading Interventionist. Mrs. Pankowski currently trains teachers in her district in the Wilson Reading System and she is an IDA certified Structured Literacy/Dyslexia Specialist. Mrs. Pankowski  is also the Education Director at Beyond Communication, LLC in Lambertville.

         The Accessible Icon Project: Changing Perspectives of Ability and Accessibility

The Accessible Icon Project is an international collaboration among people with disabilities and their allies toward a more accessible world through a dynamic, active symbol known as the “Accessible Icon”. The Accessible Icon Project features a more dynamic figure—one that aims to portray individuals with disabilities in an evolving light. The Accessible Icon Project is an ongoing work of design activism. The symbol acts as a metaphor that highlights the person over the disability. Partners of the project are from private and public organizations, as well as hundreds of cities, states, towns and government agencies from around the world.

Leah Battillo is a special education teacher of 7 years & a board certified behavior analyst. She studied elementary education & linguistics, and concentrated in special education & ESL. She was given the Presidential Award, which is awarded to one student annually who has made significant contributions to the college & the community. She received her masters in applied behavior analysis with an emphasis in autism. She was the founder & director of Beyond Disabilities week at Gordon College, and spent the day with Temple Grandin. She was the project coordinator & current team member for the internationally-recognized Accessible Icon Project. Currently, over 40 states & 25 countries use the Accessible Icon symbol. She is currently a special needs consultant in her community & is currently on the board of directors for Kupenda, an international non-profit that partners with communities to provide disability awareness, education, & medical assistance. I have been teaching for the Newark Board of education for five years. I teach students with autism grade k-2. I'm currently a doctoral student at NJCU. My coworkers and I have created a Life Skills room for our students because they struggle in this area studies have shown. We are currently reviewing the curriculum and implementing strategies that are on the IEP's as we assist the students with remote learning.

Alisa Martin-Leighton:

I have been in the field of education for over 30 years. I received my Early Childhood and Elementary Education degree from The City College of Education from New York. I also have my graduate degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Bank Street College of Education from New York. Currently, I am a Doctoral Student at NJCU's Educational Technology Leadership program. As a career, I work with children under the age of three in the Early Intervention Program. Some of my students have a diagnosis of autism, others are not diagnosed but have developmental delays.

Think Like an Instructional Designer: The Changing Role of Educators in the 21st Century

What is the role of an educator in the 21st century? In this information age, students rarely need traditional teachers to lecture information at them; most information can be found at the click of a button. What students need are dynamic and engaging instructional designers who help students to organize, analyze, synthesize, and share information in dynamic and engaging ways. This session will explore the changing role of educators in the 21st century through the lens of an instructional designer. The session will focus on a specific learning standard and model how an instructional designer would build a lesson. The workshop will also introduce free web resources for immediate use in remote or in-person learning environments.

Bio:

Dr. Michael Bitz, EdD, is an recognized innovator in education who has worked to establish creativity at the core of learning for youths around the world. His creativity-based literacy programs have impacted over 250,000 youth around the world and have been featured by many media outlets. Dr. Bitz has also written two books about his literacy program, the Comic Book Project. Dr. Bitz is a Professor of Teacher Education at Ramapo College, where he also directs the Instructional Design Center.

1. “Virtual Literacy Strategies for Middle School Students” - Tara Reilly

This upcoming school year may present some challenges for teachers that are either completely online or teaching a hybrid model of their class. Since literacy entails a great deal of interaction, communication, and practice, teachers might begin looking for online tools to assist their students in mastering their reading and writing skills. “Virtual Literacy Strategies for Middle School Students” provides activities that can be done virtually on video calls as well as different websites and applications that teachers can use to improve and maintain their students’ literacy skills.

Dr. Colleen Daly Martinez is a licensed clinical social worker and a registered play therapist supervisor with 25 years of experience providing clinical services to children and their families. She has worked in hospital, correctional, outpatient mental health, private practice, summer camp, home based and school settings, and she specializes in play therapy and treating traumatized children. She is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Ramapo College of New Jersey.  In her private practice, she provides training, supervision and consultation to individuals, agencies, summer camps and schools to ensure that children and their families receive high quality services.

Chinwe has taught mathematics at many levels from K-12 and provides training and technical assistance to districts across the state of New Jersey.  In her spare time, Chinwe enjoys listening to her audible books, travelling, and being a mom to three amazing kids.

Legislation passed in January 2020 directed New Jersey's school districts to file a report in the 2020-2021 academic year with the State D.O.E. on gifted education. This webinar provides clarification and direction on this ground breaking law by highlighting the provisions of the recently passed legislation, the Strengthening Gifted Education Act, and their impact on gifted education for the state, school districts, educators, students, and parents. Michael will discuss not only the changes, but what remains unchanged in the current law, and what the next legislative session may hold for gifted education in New Jersey.



Michael will lead webinar participants through the status of the current law for gifted education including the remaining federal and state laws governing gifted and talented education, the constitutional underpinning, funding sources, school district requirements, ESSA and state monitoring, and how the case law in the administrative and judicial arenas has treated gifted and talented education.

During this presentation, we will recognize the prevalence and realize the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) so that we can respond in a trauma-informed way and resist re-traumatization. We will explore the way that trauma can shape learning and behavior while also discussing strategies for mitigating the potential impact. Strategies for mitigating the impact of trauma while utilizing remote learning will be discussed.

Bio:

Dr. Bobbie Downs is currently the Director of the Educational Services Unit (ESU) for Burlington County Special Services School District. Dr. Downs decided to pursue a career in education after serving as a teacher and administrator in a school for Sudanese refugees in Cairo, Egypt. Since that time, Dr. Downs served in the role of teacher and administrator at the Burlington County Alternative School before being named Director of the ESU. Dr. Downs received her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Master’s Degree in Teaching from Drew University. Later, Dr. Downs earned her Master’s degree in School Leadership and her Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Rowan University. Dr. Downs also holds a Graduate Certificate of Autism Education. She is a certified mindfulness instructor for Mindful Schools and an instructor for Youth Mental Health First Aid.
