“Spider Woman/ The Longest Poem Ever Written”
Titles are an ode to Spider woman, a deity found in pre-columbian Mexico, and the Mahābhārata, an Indian Sanskrit epic. One is a fertility goddess and the other is in part a story about a battle in a labyrinth that was designed to be a deadly military machine. Pictured are women walking through an elaborate concrete wheel, or city, where if not careful and protected, can be lost to violence. We walk with faith and grace despite.
This image was made by combining two of my photos into a composite, a form of play for me that allows me to create a different energy by meshing two moments in time that wouldn’t otherwise have touched. The two images are of women walking in MacArthur park, alone and in company of each other. The backdrop is the city that surrounds them, in movement as I rushed to work in my darkroom.
