COURSE OVERVIEW:

The first line of defense against water infiltration into your house is your roof.  As a homeowner, you have many choices of roofing materials, all of which have pros and cons in terms of aesthetics, longevity, ecological impact, ease of installation, and cost.  In this class, we will discuss these different roofing options, and gain hands-on experience installing two of the more common roofing types in the northeast: Asphalt shingles and metal roofing.

WHO THIS CLASS IS FOR:

Hammerstone courses are open to women-identifying and non-binary folx as well as trans men.  Intro to Roofing courses welcome folx of any skill level without a prerequisite.

• Describe the purposes of roofing materials
• Compare and contrast various different types of roofing materials
• Enumerate what factors influence the choice of roofing material for a particular project
• Build competency installing asphalt shingles
• Build competency installing metal roofing
• Build competency installing acrylic roll-on roofing
• Describe types of roof flashings and where they are used

WHAT TO BRING

Please assemble (find in your garage, borrow from a friend, or purchase new) the following personal hand tools to bring to class.  The links give more information on what to look for when purchasing new tools.  If assembling these tools is a financial burden, please let us know and we will assist you.

• Ear and Eye protection
• Dust mask (N95 is best)
• Tool belt
• Tape measure
• Utility knife
• Speed square
• Hammer

COURSE PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Students will work as a group to install several different types of roofing on mock-ups as well as install the final roof flashing and membrane roofing on the tiny house project.

TAKE HOME:

This class has no take-home portion

• Install roof flashing on tiny house
• Apply acrylic membrane roofing on tiny house

Afternoon

• Install agricultural style metal roofing on mock-up
