People of the Pit is an unofficial, fanmade zine centered around the ground-dwelling characters of Gachiakuta; an anime and manga by Kei Urana.
FAQ
1. What is a fanzine?
A fanzine is a collaborative project run by fans that is focused on a theme. It features fan-made art, writing, and other creations! Fanzines can be digital or physical, with some physical fanzines featuring merchandise items as well.
2. What is this zine about?
People of the Pit is about the characters on the ground featured in the Gachiakuta anime and manga. This zine will depict the lives of these characters as they navigate their tumultuous world.
3. Are AU’s allowed?
Contributors are advised to create pieces that align with the canonical events of the Gachiakuta anime and manga.
4. What is this zine’s rating?
This zine is a safe-for-work zine meant for general audiences. Canon-typical violence and blood may be present! There will be little to no romantic content in this zine.
5. Will this zine contain spoilers for the manga?
Yes, spoilers for the manga will be present in People of the Pit. Zine works may cover characters and events that have not been reached in the anime.
6. Is there an age limit for moderators and contributors?
All moderators must be 18+ at the time of application, and contributors must be 16+ at the time of acceptance.
7. Is there a limit to the amount of roles you can apply to?
You can apply to as many roles as you choose, but you will only be accepted for one of them! You will not be considered for any roles you have not applied to.
8. How many contributors will there be?
People of the Pit aims to onboard 30-35 page artists, 3-5 merch artists, 3-6 spot artists, and 3-6 writers.
9. Is this zine for-charity or for-profit?
This zine is for-charity. We aim to first compensate our contributors with a free full bundle. Any remaining revenue will be donated to an organization of our contributors’ choice.
10. How will contributors be compensated?
Our contributors are guaranteed a free full digital bundle. Based on the amount of sales during the preorder period, we will cover the cost of the full physical bundle as well as shipping for the contributors.

CONTRIBUTOR GUIDELINES
Age
- All contributors must be at least 16 years old at the time of application.
Discord
- Communication will take place on the zine discord server. If you do not have a discord account, you will be asked to create one upon onboarding.
- If you need help with creating a discord account, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Original Work
- Contributors are expected to create original works for this zine. Studies, traced work, AI generated images, recreations, and previously made pieces will not be accepted as zine works.
Sharing Work
- Contributors are not permitted to share any zine work outside of the zine discord server, including work in progress images. The mod team will communicate when previews and full pieces can be shared.
- Contributors retain the rights to their work, however, they must agree that their work will remain exclusive to the zine until the zine is completed or the contributor is removed from the project.
Communication
- Communication between the mod team and contributors includes punctual check-in submissions, questions for the mods, altering the mods of any extension needs, and the completion of tasks assigned by the mods.
- Contributors who fail to submit two (2) check-ins without any communication to the mod team will be removed from the zine.
- Contributors may also be removed from the zine in the event of too many extension requests or failure to meet extension deadlines.
Removal from Zine
- Breaking any of the guidelines listed above will result in removal from the zine.
- Engaging in harmful behavior including plagiarism, harassment, use of slurs, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, or other hateful rhetoric will result in removal from the zine.
- Use of blockchain or AI technology will also result in removal.
APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Sample Accessibility
- Links to application samples must be public and active.
- If you are using a google drive link to share your samples, please ensure that the access settings are adjusted so that anyone can view. Please do not just share the sample file with the zine email address.
Sample Content
- Any pieces containing NSFW or gore should be properly labeled and submitted separately from the rest of your portfolio. If AI is found to be used in any of the samples provided, the applicant will be disqualified.
Contributor Positions
- You may apply to as many roles as you’d like, but will only be accepted for one role.
PAGE ARTISTS
Evaluation Points
- Strong compositional skills that guide the eye
- Knowledge of fundamentals such as anatomy, perspective, form, & value
- Understanding of how to manipulate fundamentals in order to convey a specific message or emotion
- Detailed backgrounds (beyond a flat color or gradient)
Works for the Zine
- Page artists are expected to complete one (1) page illustration based on a pitch they submit and the mod team approves.
- Page artists will be required to submit three (3) pitches, but will be able to submit more if they choose to.
Application Submission
- Page artists will be asked to submit three (3) samples that best represent their current skill and style as well as a portfolio that contains at least five (5) pieces (the portfolio can include the samples).
- At least one (1) sample must include a full background.
- Google Drive links, ArtStation, Carrd, Pixiv, gallery sites, etc. are acceptable as portfolios.
- Social media portfolios such as Twitter, Instagram, etc. must be organized in a way that the artwork is easy to access.
- Gachiakuta samples are encouraged but not required.
MERCH ARTISTS
Evaluation Points
- Strong compositional skills that guide the eye
- Knowledge of fundamentals such as anatomy, perspective, form, & value
- Understanding of how to manipulate fundamentals in order to convey a specific message or emotion
- Merch appropriate styling
Works for the Zine
- Merch artists are expected to complete 2-3 items.
- The items they are assigned are based on their listed preferences from the application and their suitability to the items based on their portfolio.
Application Submission
- Merch artists will be asked to submit three (3) samples that best represent their current skill and style as well as a portfolio that contains at least five (5) pieces (the portfolio can include the samples).
- At least one (1) sample must be suitable for merch.
- Experience in merchandise production is not necessary. The mod team will help guide the merch artists in the creation of their designs. However, applicants should be familiar with adhering to a template and their portfolio should contain art suitable for merch design.
- Creating appealing designs with bold lines or limited colors, use of unified cutlines, use of bold line art, etc.
- Previous experience in merch design will not be considered during application evaluation.
- Diversity in merch items is a bonus.
- Google Drive links, ArtStation, Carrd, Pixiv, gallery sites, etc. are acceptable as portfolios.
- Social media portfolios such as Twitter, Instagram, etc. must be organized in a way that the artwork is easy to access.
- Gachiakuta samples are encouraged but not required.
WRITERS
Evaluation Points
- Convey a complete story (with beginning, middle, & end; and a clear, coherent character arc) within the word count
- Effectively balance dialogue and narration
- Apply complex themes across multiple levels via appropriate literary elements
Works for the Zine
- Writers are expected to complete one (1) fanfiction (1 - 2k works) based on a pitch they submit and the mod team approves.
- Writers will be required to submit three (3) pitches, but will be able to submit more if they choose to.
Application Submission
- Writers will be asked to submit three (3) samples (each between 1 - 2k words) that best represent their current skill and style as well as a portfolio that contains at least five (5) pieces (the portfolio can include the samples).
- At least one (1) sample must be a complete work within the required word count and not an excerpt.
- Any excerpts submitted must be adjusted to work as a standalone story.
- Google Drive links are preferred. Other portfolio sites such as AO3 and Fanfiction.net are acceptable. Please do not submit an image of the story. Text must be legible (high contrast between text and background, appropriate font and font size, etc.).
- Linking to story threads is not permitted. Please format any story threads into a single document.
- Gachiakuta samples are encouraged but not required.
