State Senate Candidate Jeremy Joseph's Statement on Draft Supreme Court Opinion Overturning Roe v. Wade
LONG ISLAND, NY — In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, State Senate candidate Jeremy Joseph released the following statement:
“The pending decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is a devastating attack on reproductive rights. Our campaign is committed to fighting for abortion access and bodily autonomy, and we stand with anyone who is doing the same.
“Even here in New York, where we have enshrined reproductive rights in law, barriers to reproductive healthcare still exist based on a person’s income and immigration status. Our own neighbors, particularly Black and Brown communities, are paying the price of not having abortion access.
“There are over 150,000 uninsured, low-income New Yorkers who are ineligible for abortion services via Medicaid because of their immigration status. Coverage For All would create a state-funded Essential Plan for undocumented people.
“But making reproductive healthcare affordable is not enough. When we put a monetary price on medical care, we’re essentially saying ‘You only deserve it if you can afford it.’ Abortion services should be a right. We need to pass the New York Health Act and create a public healthcare system.
“Protecting the legacy of Roe v. Wade means eliminating all barriers to reproductive healthcare. I implore all elected officials to join us in this fight and put actions behind their words.”
