OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2024
Following up on our March/April, May, and August/September newsletters, please read on for the highlights so far, plus important updates and volunteer opportunities for the months ahead.
SCOUTMASTER’S CORNER
We are off and running! It's been a great start, with lots of patrol and troop activities and a very successful (and hot!) camping excursion at Camp Wild. I was very proud of what I saw from our boys and girls in demonstrating leadership, friendship, and the scouting way of being helpful, obedient, and kind. There is a new energy and sense of excitement across both units.
Troop 60 has scouts from a diverse background of ethnicities, nationalities, fatih traditions, and family and life experiences. This is one of the great strengths of our Troop, and of course that can also create chances for youth to learn how to overcome differences and come together to achieve goals.
One particular area that we as adult leaders work hard to reinforce with the youth leaders is clear communication, and we hope that scouts and parents will afford us patience and grace as we work to develop these skills in the Troops. Sometimes as parents, it's easier for us to just ask questions on our scouts' behalf, but I encourage you to let them take the lead in asking and answering questions. However, if a parent has any concern or question, please reach out directly to myself, Alanna, or a member of the Troop Committee.
The fun doesn't stop, so buckle up and get ready for more scouting adventures!
Keep on Scouting!
Mr. Tyler, 60B Scoutmaster
VOLUNTEER CORNER
Scouting is well underway for this school year and we have completed our first campout, so it’s time to start helping our children reach their Scouting goals by learning new skills — and earning merit badges.
Merit badges are a critical part of growing as a Scout and for rank progression. For Troop 60, there are two main times (or ways) we help scouts earn merit badges: during the year as we go; and at the Merit Badge Extravaganza in April.
Some of you reading this message may be wondering whether you’re “qualified” to be a merit badge counselor, so let me assure you that you are definitely “qualified” to help — and probably in several areas. Helping Scouts along their journey to achieving their goals is a rewarding experience, so please take five minutes to click on this link to explore the various merit badges that Scouting offers our children, and think about which one(s) you can help with. Next to each badge (listed in the left column) is a link to details of what teaching that badge entails.
We would love you to choose any badge you are willing to assist with, but our top priority is filling the required badges which are seen at the top of the page in yellow. For these we need multiple counselors.
For each badge you decide to assist with, place your name, phone number and email in the relevant column. The Troop 60 Committee will then be in touch with details about how to begin.
For those who volunteered last year, your names are still on the list (we have your contact details). Your names are highlighted in blue; please remove the highlighting if you are willing to offer the same support this year or remove your name if you are not able to teach that badge this year.
If you have any questions, please contact Jason on +91 7303599477 or jason.morris04@gmail.com.
UPCOMING MEETINGS & EVENTS
These are confirmed activities involving the full troop. Please check WhatsApp or with your SPL or Scoutmaster for any additional dates that are specific to your leadership role or patrol.
SCOUT LEADER SPOTLIGHT
ADULT LEADER SPOTLIGHT
MONTH IN REVIEW & PHOTO GALLERY
by Lisa Watanabe, Nightingale Patrol
60G had a successful first campout of the year at Camp Wild. 60G had 16 scouts (of which seven are new scouts!) and two adult leaders attending the campout. Even though the weather was extremely hot, we had a great time! We swam, climbed, zip-lined, and tried new things, such as using pocket knives, axes, and saws, trying to start a fire and much more!
One of the lessons learned is that we have to communicate better about who is bringing what food, as there were a lot of leftovers.
“It was an exciting campout especially for the new Scouts,” added Helen Robbins, 60G scribe. “We can’t wait for the next one on Chattarpur Farms.”
Troop 60 recently held an incredible campout full of adventure, excitement, and skill-building activities at Camp Wild, Haryana. The weather was hot and humid through the day, but cooler in the evening along with a gentle wind and cloud cover, making evening activities more comfortable.
The first thing we did when we arrived at the campsite was have lunch. Later, while the younger Scouts worked on earning their Firem'n Chits, the elder Scouts went on a walk to a nearby lake.
Blackhawk Patrol Leader John Forester said, “The walk was difficult yet enjoyable. It was a good way to begin the trip.”
Later that evening, all the patrols took part in a MasterChef-style cooking competition, with each patrol preparing a feast to please the judges. The Phoenix patrol won first prize with their outstanding burrito meal.
After the competition, we gathered around the campfire for skits and songs before singing Vespers as a troop.
On Saturday morning, some Scouts attempted rock climbing and rappelling, while others remained behind to try out the zipline course.
Following these exciting activities, we ate lunch and took a calming dip in the pool, which provided a much-needed escape from the hot and humid weather. We had another campfire that evening, with Scouts making up skits and stories on the spot. It was a relaxing and enjoyable way to finish up the last day.
On Sunday, we packed up the campground, held a flag ceremony, and prepared breakfast. As always, we made sure to leave the campground in better condition than we found it by setting up a police line and making sure everything was clean before leaving.
Overall, the weekend was a huge success with Troop 60 learning new skills and creating more memories.
