A Social Media Toolkit by The Voices and Faces Project and the Bigmouth Creative team

This toolkit includes: Information about Louder Together, information on our latest Louder Together poetry project “Telling a new story about mass incarceration”, 4 social media images/graphics made by Bigmouth Creative, 3 draft captions to use with graphics, and the link to the poetry submission form.

What is Louder Together?: An initiative of The Voices and Faces Project - “Louder Together” seeks to create poetry and performances that speak to a range of human rights and social justice issues. Each crowdsourced poem in the series utilizes the voices of those who have lived through or witnessed an injustice, and uses their words as a call to social and political action. We work closely with trusted allies – including Surviving the Mic, Justice for Migrant Women, and World Without Exploitation – to reach communities where they are in order to create work that is inclusive, representative and change-focused. Lines of poetry from selected submissions are woven into a final, crowdsourced piece which is then brought to life, through a video, live performance, or through one of The Voices and Faces Project's literary publications.

Overview: The Voices and Faces Project, an award-winning non-profit storytelling project, is seeking submissions for a crowdsourced poem that will feature the voices and testimonies of returning individuals and citizens (formerly incarcerated persons of any immigration status), currently incarcerated persons, and those negatively impacted by the criminal justice system in the United States of America. We especially welcome submissions that speak to the racial, economic and social injustices that have contributed to the crisis of mass incarceration in our nation.

We encourage submissions that speak hard truths. But your poem can also focus on your hopes for your community, your solidarity with others negatively impacted by these systems, and the things you have learned on your personal journey. The creative team at The Voices and Faces Project will use lines from accepted submissions to craft “Telling a new story about mass incarceration” which will be the third crowdsourced poem in our Louder Together poetry series. Contributors to the poem will be fully credited.

We believe that powerful poetry deserves to be heard as widely as possible — to be truly part of civic life and to enhance the public’s understanding of the crisis of mass incarceration. Your words and poetry that speak to a lived or witnessed injustice can serve as a call to action for our society, while highlighting aspects of the experience of incarceration that the media too often ignores. Your voice can contribute to change.

Submission Deadline: July 15, 2023.

We are especially grateful to the Illinois Humanities Council for funding and supporting this project!
