Thank you for using our voter guide for Georgia's May 2026 Primary elections! This guide focuses on Democratic Primaries in the Metro-Atlanta area, and includes select nonpartisan elections. Throughout this guide are compiled responses from our 2026 Candidate Survey, which was sent to candidates running in key elections in the Metro area.
We recommend voting early and making a plan to vote. You can use mvp.sos.ga.gov to find your polling place, see what elections you're voting in, preview your ballot, and confirm that your voting address and information are up-to-date.

This voter guide is built from a survey constructed by Atlanta DSA’s Electoral Committee, sent to candidates running in the metro-Atlanta area at all stages of government. The Republican Party is deeply hostile toward the working class, so we have prioritized contacting candidates running in Democratic Primaries and nonpartisan elections. In total, 67 candidates responded to our survey. We have only included candidates in contested races in this voter guide.
The survey asked 10 questions focused on issues ranging from the minimum wage to climate change to trans rights. Candidates were given the option of answering “yes,” ”no,” or simply not answering.
This voter guide is distinct from our endorsement process and is merely intended to aid progressive voters in making their selections. Our only endorsed candidates, Gabriel Sanchez and Mathewos Samson, are featured ahead of all other races.
We have marked incumbents (candidates seeking reelection to the same office) with an “(i)” after their name.
Our survey included the following ten survey questions:
✊ Do you support raising the minimum wage to $20/hr for all workers, indexed to inflation? | 🛠️ Do you support the provisions of the PRO Act, including repealing so-called “right-to-work laws”, allowing for collective bargaining agreements, and prohibiting employers from taking adverse actions against employees participating in protected activities like whistleblowing?
🏥 Do you support creating a single-payer health care system that is free at the point of service and inclusive of a person's unconditional right to an abortion? | 🌍 Do you support a Green New Deal to provide a jobs guarantee, full employment, and the achievement of 100% carbon-neutral energy by 2035 at the latest? |
🕊️ Do you support abolishing ICE as well as repealing Georgia’s HB 1105, which mandates local law enforcement to enter into 287(g) contracts deputizing local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration law? | 🏘️ Do you support corporate landlord divestment and regulation by limiting the number of properties a corporation can own, as well as ending the statewide ban on rent control?
🗳️ Do you support the right to vote for people currently in prison? | 💵 Do you commit to rejecting donations from pro-Israel lobby groups, special interest groups, for-profit corporations including education service providers (charter schools), and rejecting any political endorsement from police unions?
🇵🇸 Do you support the BDS movement to end US support for Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people and pressure Israel to comply with international law? | 🏳️⚧️ Do you commit to protecting transgender people’s access to gender-affirming healthcare and protecting their rights in schools, housing, public places and ensuring their safety in our justice system? |
This year, Atlanta DSA is proud to endorse State House candidates Gabriel Sanchez and Mathewos Samson. At this time, we have not made any other endorsements.
Gabriel is running for re-election in District 42 (Smyrna & South Cobb) after his groundbreaking victory in 2024. He’s shown up time and time again to fight for working people, walking picket lines with striking workers, campaigning for abortion rights, and advocating for a free Palestine. As State Representative, he’ll continue to be a radical voice for change and a true champion for democratic socialism.
Mathewos is a community organizer, democratic socialist, and lifelong Atlantan running for State House in District 58 (Southwest & Central Atlanta). Mathewos grew up in Old Fourth Ward and was raised by a family of immigrants who taught him to fight for his community and stand up against injustice. Now, he's running to win affordable housing, Medicare For All, and an economy that works for the working class and not just the billionaires.
Working families are struggling to make ends meet, while the rich keep getting richer. The GOP is pushing a racist, extremist agenda, and the corporate Democratic establishment enables them every step of the way. That’s why Gabriel and Mathewos are running: to challenge the status quo and bring the working class into the halls of power. As democratic socialist candidates, Gabriel and Mathewos are refusing money from corporations or their PACs, running grassroots campaigns of, by, and for working people. Mike Thurmond | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – | – |
Public polling and fundraising both indicate that the leading candidates for Governor are former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, former state senator Jason Esteves, and former lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan, with outside chances for State Rep. Derrick Jackson and former DeKalb County CEO Mike Thurmond. Duncan is a former Republican who left the party over Trump’s denial of the 2020 election. While Duncan claims to have come around on issues like abortion, gun control, and Medicaid expansion, his nomination would still be a major wrong turn for Democrats in a time where it is crucial for them to stand up to Republicans. Our recommendation is to vote against Geoff Duncan and for one of the other major Democratic candidates.
The Lieutenant Governor presides over the State Senate, as well as becoming governor in the event of a vacancy. No candidates for Lieutenant Governor responded to our survey. The candidates are State Senator Josh McLaurin, former State Senator Nabilah Parkes (née Islam), and Richard N. Wright. While McLaurin and Parkes are both claiming a progressive mantle, McLaurin has a stronger record in the State Senate.

The Secretary of State presides over elections and most professional licensing. The candidates are former Ossoff/Warnock AAPI Constituency Director Cam Ashling, Fulton County Commissioner Dana Barrett, former Fulton County State Court Judge Penny Brown Reynolds, and voter advocate Adrian Consonery Jr. Penny Brown Reynolds briefly hosted a reality television show entitled Family Court with Judge Penny. (After initial publication, Consonery submitted a corrected response indicating his agreement with all ten questions.)
The Attorney General presides over state prosecutions and files lawsuits on behalf of the state, among other important duties and powers. Neither candidate for Attorney General responded to our survey. The two candidates are Democratic State House Caucus chair Tanya Miller and former State House Minority Leader Bob Trammell.

The Commissioner of Insurance presides over the Department of Insurance, which handles insurance regulation. They are also designated by law as the Safety Fire Commissioner, who has enforcement powers and duties, including regulatory authority, relating to fire safety. This office is deserving of particular scrutiny, as two of the last four commissioners are currently in federal prison for fraud. Of the candidates who responded, both Blalock and Waites have recently sought other offices, with Blalock seeking two other offices in the last five years, while Waites has sought seven other offices in the last ten years. Waites has resigned from both offices she won election to in order to seek other offices. Furthermore, she was fined by the State Ethics Commission for failing to file required campaign finance reports regarding her successful Atlanta City Council campaign, and shortly before departing office she sent a “constituent newsletter” to further her campaign for Clerk of Superior Court.

The State School Superintendent is the top executive official for Georgia schools, but serves under the direction of the State Board of Education, which is appointed by the Governor. In 2022, the Democratic nomination for this office was won by a charter school advocate, and teachers’ unions ultimately endorsed Republican incumbent Richard Woods.
Lydia Powell was the only candidate for this office to respond to our survey. Although Powell has been running since July, she has not filed any public disclosure of her donors, and her website indicates she accepts CashApp donations, which are difficult if not impossible to handle in a compliant manner. Her public platform is rather vague. Otha Thornton, the 2018 Democratic nominee, has been endorsed by the Georgia Federation of Teachers and the AFL-CIO.

The Public Service Commission regulates utilities, including Georgia Power, and has authority to approve or deny rate increases. If Democrats win this seat and defend the other seat up for election, they would hold a majority on the Commission. Although this is called the “District 5” seat, it is voted on statewide. All three candidates are established political figures in Cobb County: Cupid is the spouse of County Commission Chair Lisa Cupid, and Edwards and Pressley both ran in the 2020 primary for County Commission District 4 and have also lost more recent bids for office.
Although judicial elections in Georgia are officially nonpartisan, they have great implications for issues like reproductive justice and voting rights. This year, a slate of challengers with Democratic backing has teamed up to challenge two Republican appointees to the nine-member Supreme Court of Georgia, and there are also two challengers to Republican appointees on the fifteen-member Court of Appeals. Below, we discuss these races.
Incumbent Charlie Bethel faces a challenge from lawyer Miracle Rankin, and incumbent Sarah Hawkins Warren faces a challenge from former state senator Jen Jordan. Bethel and Warren, who were appointed to the court by Republican former governor Nathan Deal, both joined the Supreme Court’s 6-1 orders reinstating Georgia’s abortion ban. While candidates are limited in their ability to comment on specific cases, Jordan and Rankin are both endorsed by the Democratic Party of Georgia as well as the Asian American Advocacy Fund, EMILY’s List, and Fair Fight Action. They have emphasized their personal beliefs in reproductive rights, voting rights, and impartially applying the law so that corporations do not have an unfair advantage. The choice for voters is clear.
For the Court of Appeals, incumbent Trent Brown faces a challenge from Fulton County Deputy DA Will Wooten, and incumbent Elizabeth Gobeil faces former Fulton County judicial officer[1] Fatima Harris Felton. Wooten and Felton have also publicly indicated their personal beliefs in reproductive rights and voting rights, but do not have the same level of backing as the Supreme Court challengers, although Wooten is endorsed by Georgia Conservation Voters.
No candidate for this seat responded to our survey. Incumbent representative Hank Johnson, who is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, faces challenges from Ansel Postell and Ben Truman.

While Tony Brown did respond Yes to all of our questions, we note that he frequently runs for office and generally receives a small percentage of the vote. He came in last place in his 2021 run for Mayor of McDonough, and while he made it to a runoff in the 2020 primary for Henry County sheriff, he lost that runoff, receiving just 23% of the vote.
We intend to include information about local judicial elections in a future edition using a non-survey methodology, due to limitations on judicial candidates’ ability to comment on specific policy issues. The following counties in the Atlanta Regional Commission have contested judicial races: Fulton (3 races), Clayton (3 races), Rockdale (2 races), Gwinnett, Henry, Douglas, Cherokee, and Fayette.
