High School Marching Band / Drill Team
Section I - Heat Monitoring and Safety Training
Monitoring and Notification of Temperature / Heat Index/ WBGT Conditions
- All Directors monitor daily weather report from Perry Weather
- Live surface conditions, student acclimation, conditioning level, and activity plans must all be taken into consideration in hot weather conditions
- Staff should use WBGT readings in addition to temperature and heat index readings to monitor environmental conditions during outside activities
- Band/Drill team must observe Athletic Heat Policies when utilizing outdoor athletic facilities
Enforcement of Safety Training / Heat Policies
- All marching band and drill team directors will complete the annual UIL Safety Training for Coaches and Directors prior to the start of outdoor rehearsals
- All directors monitor heat exposure, directed water break intervals and activity rigor
- All directors ensure that an open water access policy is observed during all outdoor rehearsals (regardless of temperatures) in addition to timed, directed water breaks
- Per UIL, site-based safety and emergency response plans are developed and communicated by the Head Director and reviewed via drill annually prior to the start of outdoor rehearsals
- Violation of policies are reported in writing to the LISD Director of Fine Arts
Section II - Heat Policy (Link to Band/Drill Team Heat Policy on LISD website)
100-103 degree temperature and/or a heat index of 110-113 degrees
- Open water policy throughout all rehearsals
- Directed water break intervals occur at least every 20-25 minutes
- Physical conditioning or rigorous activities inherent to these disciplines will not exceed 1.5 hours and total outdoor rehearsal block will not exceed 3 hours in these conditions
- Hot weather uniform alternatives (shorts/t-shirts, no formal uniform hats) will be worn when students are performing in these (or hotter) conditions for more than an hour
104-106 degrees and/or heat index of 114-116 degrees
- Open water policy throughout all rehearsals
- Directed water break intervals occur at least every 15-20 minutes
- No physical conditioning; other activities inherent to these disciplines will not exceed 1 hour and total outdoor rehearsal block will not exceed 2 hours in these conditions
107-109 degrees and/or heat index of 117-119 degrees
- Open water policy throughout all rehearsals
- Directed water break intervals occur at least every 10-15 minutes
- Static activity permitted only (standing and playing instruments, marking drill or staging spots) and total outdoor time will not exceed 1 hour in these conditions; No physical conditioning, marching, tracking or rehearsing of visual/physical components or choreography outdoors
110 degree or 120 heat index
- No outdoor practices permitted
