Take Action to Oppose The Repeal of The Affordable Care Act

Please call your representatives and implore them to protect the Affordable Care Act. Victims of domestic and sexual violence often need health care as a result of the violence and abuse. Obamacare, as it’s also known, provides health and safety protections for victims, by: 1) Including provisions to cover screening and brief counseling for domestic and interpersonal violence, 2) Prohibiting insurance companies from denying victims of violence health insurance, 3) Allowing victims to get health care for themselves or their children without reliance on an abusive spouse, and 4) Expanding access to mental health services for women and children.

1. Call your Member of Congress and Senators to express your serious concern about any efforts to repeal the ACA.

You can find your Member of Congress and their contact information here: http://www.house.gov/

Senator Feinstein's Office: (202) 224-3841 and Senator Harris' Office: (202) 224-3553

Sample script: Hello, my name is ______ and I’m with    (name of organization, if applicable)    in    (city)   . I’m calling to express the critical, lifesaving importance of the Affordable Care Act for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and to ask you to protect the progress we've made to protect the health and safety of millions of Americans who are victims. Health insurance is especially imperative for survivors, as many need ongoing or critical care related to their abuse, and without the ACA’s pre-existing conditions provision, health plans could charge victims more for the same benefits package or even deny them coverage. The ACA also requires doctors to screen for domestic violence, and its repeal could discourage doctors from screening, offering brief counseling, and addressing health needs related to the abuse. Survivors of domestic and sexual violence--and all of us--need access to comprehensive, high-quality health insurance and care. Thank you.

2. Call your State Assemblymember and Senator. It is important that state officials know how threats to federal funding may impact domestic violence survivors and programs in their communities.
