Section 1: Short answer questions. Please write a thoughtful paragraph or two answering the questions below. 

Why do you want to be on the staff of The Messenger?



What unique perspectives and experiences do you have that would help diversify The  Messenger? How do they contribute to you being a strong applicant?



What activities are you involved in at Garfield or in your community? How do you manage these responsibilities in a timely manner?



How can the Messenger represent the views of a diverse student  body? In your own words, why is diversity crucial to The Messenger?



Do you have any prior journalism, graphic design, photography or drawing experience? Elaborate on your experience and what apps (if any) you have used.  (Experience is recommended but not required.)



What ideas do you have for improvements or additions or changes to The Messenger? 



Do you have any questions about The Messenger or what your responsibilities would be? (You should ask at least something here, journalists are very curious people!)



Section 2: Samples. We are looking for applicants with varied skill sets. Choose one prompt from part A, one prompt from part B, and one from part C. Send these writing samples along with your app. Feel free to submit work you have already created!

Part A, Writing. Messenger staff write all kinds of things, all the time!

 Write a 300-500 word article about Garfield or Central District news (interviews encouraged for this)

 Write a 300-500 word feature article about a friend or family member. Include notes and questions from your interview with them  

  • Write a 300-500 word story about a subject you would like to see in The Messenger. Write something you are passionate about!

Part B, Graphics. Messenger staff create graphics and take photos of all kinds of things, all the time! Submit 1-3 pieces of visual art OR photography 

  • Look at copy of The Messenger. Draw or design an interesting graphic that you would be proud to put on a page, or submit an excellent photograph.
  • Submit an interesting InDesign page (you may use filler words to fill the page)
  • Brainstorm an idea for a Messenger fundraiser and design a flier for it!
  • Submit a mock cover for The Messenger featuring your own art!

Part C, Social Media. Messenger staff create social media posts to inform and entertain all the time!

  • Create an informational post or Instagram reel
  • Create a fun, community engagement post or Instagram reel
  • Create an idea for a photo/social media post. Include 1-5 photos and a 50-100 written blurb about the story
