The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Virtual Library provides easy access to digital resources to support K-12 teaching and learning at school and home. These resources have been purchased or licensed by TDSB, provided provincially, or selected for curriculum support by the TDSB’s Library Learning Resources department. They are available 24/7 with an internet connection.

The TDSB Virtual Library connects students, educators, and families with diverse resources to support inquiry, literacy, and Global Competencies.  See our Collection Development Statement. 

Students may need guidance selecting resources that best meet their learning needs.

Passwords are only for TDSB community users and if posted online, must be in TDSB password-protected environments. We encourage you to bookmark, download, or print the passwords for ease of access

Created specifically for kids and the adults who work with them, this online database encourages reading success. Kids can use it to find books that are just right for their reading level and interests. Parents, teachers, and librarians can also use it to find tools to teach with books and engage young readers.

Over 140,000 curriculum-aligned encyclopedia articles, as well as educational videos, images, magazines and journals, learning games, and more available in three levels—Elementary, Middle, and High. Updated monthly.

A collection of over 3.25 million images for all curriculum areas.

Gale in Context: Elementary

Curriculum-aligned content including books, magazines, news periodicals, images, and videos on a variety of subjects for inquiry and reading engagement on a wide range of topics.  Includes over 16,600 images, 1,700 charts and graphs, and 600 videos. Formerly Kids InfoBits.


Canadian Encyclopedia

Over 19,500 bilingual articles on Canada’s history, people, and stories. Includes interactive timelines and images.

Explora K-6

Over 180,000 full-text articles from popular children’s magazines, easy-to-read encyclopedic entries and over 1.8 million images on a wide variety of topics for elementary student inquiry.

Canadian Reference Centre *

This database includes leading Canadian periodicals and international periodicals in full text, full-text reference books, thousands of full-text biographies, and an image collection containing thousands of photos, maps and flags. The collection includes images from Canadian Press.

Global Issues in Context

Articles, biographies, images, videos, and more to support global awareness, inquiry, and critical thinking, including 250 different country topic pages and over 400 pages on specific issues for searching or browsing.

Teen Health & Wellness

Nonjudgmental, straightforward articles for 7-12 students on a variety of health & well-being topics.  All content is reviewed by professionals in the relevant field.

Advanced Placement Source *

An online collection of journals, magazines, and images for academic research designed to meet the needs of high school students enrolled in various Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses.

Canadian Points of View *

Containing resources that present multiple sides of a current issue — including information on key topics of interest to Canadian researchers — this database helps students develop persuasive arguments and essays, better understand controversial issues and develop analytical thinking skills

History Reference Centre *

Covering both U.S. and world history topics, History Reference Center is a full-text database featuring historical reference books, magazines, journals and thousands of primary source documents.

Science Reference Centre *

Full text resources from hundreds of science magazines, journals, encyclopedias, reference books and a vast collection of images.

Literary Reference Centre Plus *

Full-text resources for information on thousands of authors and their works across literary

disciplines and timeframes. It gives students, teachers and librarians a complete foundation of literary reference works to meet their research needs.

Canadian Literary Centre *

With a deliberate Canadian focus, this database consists of book and reference content from Essays on Canadian Writing Press (ECW Press). ECW Press also provides several individual monographs, author biographies, essays, literary criticism and book reviews.


Canadiana Online

96,000 digitized historical publications, including books, magazines, journals, newspapers and government publications. Primary sources for inquiry.

CBC Curio

Streaming educational video and audio from CBC and Radio-Canada for K-12 Canadian curriculum, critical thinking, current events and student engagement.

Create an account using your TDSB email address and Access Code found in the Passwords. You may use any password you wish. Check your email and click the confirmation link.

Learn360

Streaming video, audio, and accompanying support materials for K-12 curriculum and student engagement.

NFB

Streaming videos on issues of global importance from a Canadian perspective including documentaries, animations, experimental films, fiction and interactive works for K-12 Canadian curriculum, critical thinking, and student engagement.

Register using your TDSB email.  You may use any password you wish.  Check your email and click the confirmation link.

Encyclopedia Universalis

An extensive French-language reference resource with over 38,000 articles featuring bibliographies, maps, timelines, integrated dictionary, images, videos, and primary sources.

Universalis Junior

A French-language reference resource designed for students with over 4,000 articles (including 1,800 articles in French and English for bilingual education) featuring maps, integrated dictionary, animations, charts, images, and videos.

A: TDSB staff and students can access most Virtual Library resources outside of the TDSB network using the Virtual Library Passwords

A: TDSB staff can access educator resources on the Virtual Library using this staff login information

Q: Where can I find resources to use in my classroom for specific grade levels and subjects?

A: Please contact your TDSB Professional Library with your request, our librarians will recommend resources just for you!

Q: How do I update the Teacher-Librarian name on my school’s Virtual Library?

A: Please complete this Teacher-Librarian Name Update form and we’ll update your VL as soon as possible

Q: How do I share login information with my staff and students?

A:  Virtual Library Passwords may be shared with all TDSB staff, students, and families. We encourage users to bookmark, download, or print this document for ease of access. These passwords are only for TDSB community users & if posted online, must be in TDSB password-protected environments (Brightspace, Google Classroom or Drive)
