Dear Senator,

On behalf of Emgage Foundation, a national civic education and engagement organization for Muslim Americans, we urge you to oppose the nomination of Jay Patrick Murray for Alternate U.S. Representative to the United Nations for Special Political Affairs due to his well documented Islamophobic and intolerant views.

As a former Department of State official who served at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, the men and women who represent our great nation in New York and abroad should exemplify the best, and not the worst, of America. Mr. Murray’s public posts on social media and personal beliefs disqualify him from this leadership position. We are also deeply disturbed by his acrimonious behavior toward those whom he disagrees with.

Mr. Murray frequently posts messages on his Facebook account praising former Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos, who is well known for his racist, xenophobic, and misogynistic views. Many of Mr. Murray’s messages include comments such as, “Milo rocks,” and “preach, Milo!”, in addition to sharing several of Yiannopoulos’ inflammatory videos. In one such article shared by Mr. Murray, Yiannopoulos commented on President Trump’s suggestion to screen immigrants, stating, “the test will apply to all immigrants, yet its obvious target is Muslims, who, as we know, get a bit bomby in the presence of gays, a bit rapey in the presence of women who wear skirts shorter than their ankles and generally a bit hostile and violent around anyone who doesn't have their bum in the air five times a day."

Mr. Murray has targeted Muslims on a number of occasions, including when he demonized the entire Muslim community of Brussels following a terrorist attack there. In a published column for Newsmax he claimed, “At worst they’re planning to kill their infidel neighbors, at best they protect and harbor those who are doing the killing.” He also labelled CAIR, a leading Muslim legal and advocacy organization as a “jihadi friendly organizations” and called the Muslim refugee migration to Europe “an invasion.” Mr. Murray has no qualms expressing anti-Muslim sentiment and using sweeping generalizations to denigrate the Muslim community both here in the United States and abroad.

Furthermore, his comments regarding his opponents and those who disagree with his views are absolutely not compatible with American values. Mr. Murray once expressed disdain for former President Barack Obama by sharing an image of him shaking hands with Al Sharpton with the caption, “Barack set out to 'fundamentally transform the United States of America.' And did he ever. How's that working for you?" He has also suggested that being a Democrat was akin to having a “mental illness.”

These are but a few examples of the hurtful and embarrassing actions of Mr. Murray and clearly are not the traits of someone we would want to send to the United Nations to represent us. Mr. Murray’s well documented actions constitute a disturbing lack of judgement and outright racism.  Emgage Foundation strongly opposes Jay Murray’s nomination as a U.S. representative to the U.N. and urges members of the Senate to also vote against this nomination.
