What is this guide?

After school and out-of-school time (OST) opportunities and programs for Elementary (K-5) and Middle Schoolers (6-8) happen all over the city including on school campuses, at City Youth Centers, community centers, local non-profits, businesses and more. This guide brings all of these opportunities together in one place.

An After School Quick Guide is also included and can be found on the next few pages. It provides an overview of the programs that will meet your young person’s specific needs.

What are the Elementary School Out-of-School Time Network and Middle School Network?

The Elementary School Out-of-School Time Network (ESON) and Middle School Network (MSN) are coordinated by the Cambridge Agenda for Children Out-of-School Time (AFCOST), a citywide intermediary working with Cambridge Public Schools as well as many other city-run and community-based programs serving young people beyond the school day and year.

The Agenda for Children Out-of-School Time’s mission is to increase equity, access, and innovation, and sustain the highest quality out-of-school time opportunities and experiences for all children, youth, and families. Transportation to After School for Cambridge Public Schools Students

Eligible CPS K-8th grade students can ride the bus to after school programs (e.g., youth center, community program, etc.), if the program is on an existing route. This is arranged through school clerks and Transportation Change Form (available on CPS website): secure1.cpsd.us/forms/Transportation_Plan_Form.pdf

K-5th grade: eligible if the afterschool program is located 1+ mile from their school.
6th-8th grade: eligible if the afterschool program is located 1.5+ miles from their school.

Late buses: All Upper Schools and many elementary schools offer a late bus. They run from October-May (when CPS schools provide after school clubs and intramurals). The late buses depart from schools between 4:30-4:45pm, and operate primarily and often only on the days clubs/intramurals are being offered: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays -- and with seasonal breaks. Cambridge Preschool Program - After School Impacts

The Cambridge Preschool Program (CPP) represents the long standing goal of CPS and the City of Cambridge to advance fundamental educational equity objectives: the implementation of free universal preschool. This is being managed through the City’s Office of Early Childhood for preschool programs offered by CPS, DHSP, and a variety of private and non-profit community providers. After School-Specific Impacts

4-year-old preschoolers currently are not eligible to apply to DHSP Afterschool Programs. If families need full-day / full-year care, they should apply to preschool programs that offer extended day and full-year options. All DHSP Preschool classrooms and many community-based preschools offer full day / full year programming.

When

School Year	Program operates on a school year calendar. Families/young people usually sign up in the fall and stay part of the program through the end of the school year (until June). Some programs (DHSP) require earlier registration (in the previous spring) to enroll for school year

Cambridge Community Center (CCC) After School Program		EM
Long standing community center dedicated to family engagement, positive behavior guidance, and innovation to support the social emotional development of every child. CCC offers homework help, STEAM Activities, Karate, Cooking, Sports, and more! Snacks are included in tuition. During vacation breaks, breakfast, lunch, and snacks are also served.

Cambridge-Ellis School Language Program		E
The Language Program offers children a language immersion experience in French, Spanish, or Mandarin, as well as English in the Rainbow Room. Teachers in each of the four classrooms infuse art, music, outdoor exploration, print, and materials from other cultures into the daily experience of each child.
Location:	80 Trowbridge St., Cambridge
Dates/Times:	September 1- June 10, Monday-Friday, 3-6pm
Primary Program Activities:	Spanish, Mandarin, or French Language Immersion. Children learn language through music, cooking, art, nature/outdoor play, science, and more!
Grades/Ages Served:	Ages 2.9 - 6 for French and Spanish, up to 4th grade for Mandarin.

Cambridge YMCA After School		EM
At the Cambridge YMCA After School, children have many opportunities to grow and discover new hobbies and interests. Children have access to a wide range of enrichment and educational activities including arts and crafts, swimming lessons, gym time, and other classroom activities.

Community Art Center		EMH
After school program includes classes that cover disciplines including the visual arts, dance, theater, and media arts. All students participate in sequential, semester-long focus classes and present their work four times each year including at outdoor summer events, Arts Interactive, and a final spring show.

Teen Public Art Program
Dates/Times:	Fall Session: September 27-December 22 Spring Session: January 12-May 27 Tuesday, Thursday, 4-6pm
Primary Program Activities:	Creating public art projects for local corporations and institutions using digital print, spray paint, and traditional paint. Collaborating with local artists on projects. Technique building in the studio classroom between projects.
Grades/Ages Served:	Ages 13-19

Dragonfly After School Program (serving Graham & Parks students)		E
Dragonfly offers engaging, developmentally appropriate experiences for children age 5 through 4th grade who attend the Graham and Parks School. Dragonfly is a play based after school program that promotes social growth, learning, discovery, appropriate physical activity, and a sense of community.

East End House After School		EM
Classes are designed to build academic confidence and complement what children learn in school. Students have the choice of daily enrichment activities that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), with arts and character development elements woven into all curriculum. Staff plan classes based on student interest and connect their lessons to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. All youth also receive homework help.

The Work Force @ CSUS		M
The Work Force is a workforce development program run out of the Cambridge Housing Authority. The Cambridge Program for Individuals with Special Needs is open to Cambridge residents with intellectual disabilities who are 11+. Activities include: swimming, fitness, arts and crafts, zumba, board games, cooking, drama, weightlifting, hygiene, Activities of Daily Living (ADL) skills, field trips, and a variety of sports including but not limited to bowling, pickleball, soccer, basketball, track and field, tennis, powerlifting, and volleyball.

Leadership and Work Experience

Bridging the Gap at Salvation Army		MH
Bridging the Gap was initiated to serve court-involved and at-risk or high risk youth ages 12-18. The goal is to educate youth on the resources and tools needed to make better decisions for themselves and attain a more promising future, and includes a twelve-unit life skills curriculum, designed by The Salvation Army, focusing on prevention and intervention. All young people are welcome.

David Walker Scholars		M
Members of the Harvard Black Men’s Forum created PBHA’s David Walker Scholars to empower young men in Boston through education and mentorship. The program strives to create a sense of black cultural and historical pride, to provide guidance and leadership in order to prepare young men for a positive and prosperous future, and to break the negative stereotypes of the common black man in America. David Walker Scholars teaches and mentors young men on black history and life skills including college planning, understanding drug use in the community, and interacting with the police and other figures of authority. Programming extends beyond the classroom and includes field trips and other activities to create and strengthen mentoring relationships.

Big Sisters Boston		EM
Big Sister’s one-to-one mentoring program matches girls between the ages of 7-14 with a Big Sister. These Little Sisters meet individually with their Big Sisters at a date and time of their choosing, and engage in low- to no-cost activities that can range from baking to basketball, watching movies to simply talking with each other. Big and Little Sisters commit to at least one year together and meet twice a month for a few hours. Little Sisters can remain matched with their Big Sisters until they are 20 years old, at which point they graduate from the program and can become Big Sisters themselves and receive support through the age of 24!

Cambridge Camping: CCBound

CCBound offers children ages 8-13 the opportunity to participate in up to three one-week overnight camp experiences scheduled for late August and during the Massachusetts school vacation weeks in February and April. The program is designed to prepare campers and their families for longer summer placements, strengthening the pipeline to full-session overnight camp experiences through CCAccess programming. Cambridge Baseball Leagues

There are four leagues in Cambridge (North, East, West and Central Cambridge), co-ed teams (all genders) serving ages 5-12. All start around late March/April and ask families to register online by April 1st. Scholarships available. MIT Spring HSSP & MIT Spark

This MIT Educational Studies program happens over five weekends from February-April on Sat and Sun for a few hours each day. Classes are for 7th-12th graders, either on MIT campus or online, and are taught by MIT students. Deadline is usually in Mid-February; cost is $60-$70 with financial aid available. Neighborhood Service Project

Young people work in groups on neighborhood and community issues that they care about in this youth employment program. Program is through the Office of Workforce Development at City of Cambridge Department of Human Services and happens at Cambridge Youth Centers (Frisoli, Moore, Russell, Gately, Moses). Applications are usually available in mid-February for young people aged 14 & 15. Must be a Cambridge resident and eligible to work in the U.S. Young people are paid minimum wage for their hours in the program.
