Upper Body Layers

You need at least three insulating layers: a windproof layer, a warmth layer, and a wicking layer. Make sure they fit comfortably over each other. If you get cold easily, we suggest that you take four insulating layers, or three layers plus a vest. You should have two lightweight insulating layers: one to wear while dog sledding and one to wear during lunch or at camp (if camping).

Head, Neck, Hands, and Feet

Adequate head and hand wear is essential to staying warm. Liner gloves are important for working with sled dogs and worn under mittens or heavy gloves. It is important to have a layer to protect your face against potential wind. Sunglasses are very important to protect your eyes from the sun reflecting off the snow. We strongly discourage cotton socks, wool socks and polypropylene liner socks are best. We have excellent winter boots available for rent at the Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge. Please ensure that you have adequate boots to keep your feet warm and safe.
