Why Summer Matters

Summer programs provide structure to young people's summer experiences, providing them with opportunities to build strong relationships, make new friends, build and keep fresh academic skills, engage in new experiences, and find fun ways to stay active. Research has also shown that participating in summer programs reduces summer learning loss, which happens to all young people in the months they are out of school and can have a significant impact on growth and learning over time.

What are ESON and MSN?

The Elementary School Out-of-School Time Network (ESON) and Middle School Network (MSN) are coordinated by the Cambridge Agenda for Children Out-of-School Time (OST), a citywide intermediary working with Cambridge Public Schools as well as many other city-run and community-based programs serving young people beyond the school day and year.

The Agenda for Children OST’s mission is to increase equity, access and innovation and sustain the highest quality OST opportunities and experiences for all children, youth and families. How to Use This Guide

Our goal is to provide one place to review all of the major options for your child(ren's) age/grade. This guide includes all of the major programs for this age group in Cambridge: those run by nonprofits, by City agencies, by local universities, by businesses and others.

The Summer Program Quick Guide (the grid on the first few pages) will provide less detail but a quick overview of what programs will meet your needs. Each program has some key details listed, and the electronic version also includes links to the program applications and websites.

If you would like someone to talk through your options, please let us know. We can help sort through the information you see here and choose which options may work for you and your family. Primary Program Activities:	Lots of time to play and create. Ride the T and go on daily adventures in Cambridge and beyond. Go outside everyday. Make really tasty snacks

Cambridge Youth Enrichment Program (CYEP)		EM
Location:	Cambridge local schools, sites unconfirmed
Dates/Times:	July 6th-August 6th. Camp hours: 9am-3:30pm (drop off starting at 8:30, pick up until 4pm). Each Friday the hours will be 9am-1pm for youth, to allow time for staff and curriculum development.
Primary Program Activities:	Mornings of educational enrichment, weekly field trips, outdoor play, swimming
Grades/Ages Served:	Rising 1st-8th graders (ages 6-13), must be age 6 by first day of camp (priority given to residents of CHA housing or other affordable housing in Cambridge)
To Enroll:	Register online: pbha.org (applications available soon!). CYEP is one of 12 summer camps run by college students as part of Harvard’s Phillips Brooks House Summer Urban Program (SUP)
Register by:	Priority deadline is April 15th
Cost:	$140 for the first child and $120 for each additional sibling. Preference is given to returning campers and children who have particular academic or financial need for the program

Camp Rainbow		EMH
Location:	Cambridge Street Upper School, 840 Cambridge St.
Dates/Times:	Weekly sessions offered from July 6th-August 14th, 9am-3pm (full-day), 12:30pm-3pm (half-day). Half day enrollment is only available for students who are enrolled in the Cambridge Public Schools Extended School Year Comprehensive Program and Services
Primary Program Activities:	Camp Rainbow serves children and youth (ages 6-22) with disabilities by providing a recreational experience including outdoor activities, swimming, field trips, arts and crafts, and cooking activities
Grades/Ages Served:	K-12th graders, ages 6-22

Register by:	April 24th; applications received after April 24th will be automatically added to Waiting Pool
Cost:	$60 per week for full-day attendance; $15 per week for half-day

Community Art Center: Art Rocks! Summer Camp		EM
Location:	Community Art Center, 119 Windsor St., Cambridge
Dates/Times:	9-weeks, July 6th-September 4th, Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm
Primary Program Activities:	Youth in this summer program build artistic skills, while also participating in outside summer fun activities. Program includes three full meals per day and weekly field trips to places like Spectacle Island, Mystic Aquarium, Roller Kingdom, Roger Williams Zoo, and the Institute of Contemporary Art

Whitehead Institute: Expedition: Bio		M
Location:	Whitehead Institute: 455 Main Street, Cambridge
Dates/Times:	Session 1: July 6th-July 17th, Session 2: August 17th-August 28th Each session will cover same content, students should only apply to 1 session Monday-Friday, 9am-2:30pm (The program will end by 1:00pm each Friday)
Primary Program Activities:	Through hands-on activities, laboratory modules and discussions with scientists, rising 7th and 8th grade middle school students will learn how methods from the fields of ecology, genetics, chemistry, and bioengineering are used to answer some of the most challenging questions in the life sciences today-and have an awful lot of fun doing it!

Primary Program Activities:	Big Sisters and Little Sisters meet out in the community for their time together - during the pandemic, they were meeting virtually. Big Sisters runs a few site based mentoring programs as well

Primary Program Activities:	JBBBS matches adults to children for one-to-one mentoring, role-modeling, encouragement and friendship. Programs include: Community Program, LGBTQ+ Program, and Type 1 Diabetes Initiative
Grades/Ages Served:	Ages 7-18, JBBBS has deep ties to the Jewish community, they are fully inclusive, and the children, families, volunteers, staff and board members hail from a huge variety of religious affiliations. You do not have to be Jewish to participate

Did you know the Cambridge Summer Foods Program provides free meals and fun to Cambridge children and youth from the end of June through August?
The Cambridge Summer Food Program provides free, nutritious meals to Cambridge children and youth every weekday at parks across the city. The program also provides meals to eligible summer camps and free snacks at "Screen on the Green" Family Movie nights.
