I am writing to urge your office to take immediate action to protect the health and safety of Los Angeles residents by filing a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Republic Services and Browning-Ferris Industries to prevent the disposal of toxic wildfire debris at Sunshine Canyon Landfill.

On February 14, the Los Angeles City Council approved a motion introduced by Councilmember John Lee (CD12) and seconded by Councilmember Monica Rodriguez, directing your office to seek a TRO against the landfill’s operators. Given the landfill’s longstanding environmental failures, the lack of sufficient testing and oversight, and the severe risks posed by hazardous wildfire ash, this legal action is critical to ensuring public health and environmental safety.

Key Reasons for Immediate Legal Action:

• Public Health Risks – Toxic debris from wildfire burn sites can contain carcinogens, heavy metals, and harmful particulates that will be dispersed by the area’s strong winds, exposing local communities to severe health hazards.
• Proximity to Critical Water Supplies – Sunshine Canyon is located less than a mile from the LA Aqueduct Cascades and Van Norman Reservoir, which provide water to one-third of the city. Any contamination could be catastrophic for millions of Angelenos.
• Sunshine Canyon’s History of Violations – The landfill has received over 17,146 complaints filed with South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and has been issued 376 violations for its repeated failures to control odor and air pollution. This track record proves it cannot be trusted to self-regulate toxic materials.

The City Council has spoken, and the residents of Los Angeles demand urgent legal intervention. Your office has the power to halt this reckless decision before it causes irreversible harm. I urge you to act swiftly and file a temporary restraining order against Republic Services and Browning-Ferris Industries to stop them from accepting this hazardous waste at Sunshine Canyon Landfill.
