O.A. Thorp Academy Quarter 1 Remote Learning Plan For Families

Students will be learning at home this fall, and we’re committed to providing students with an engaging learning experience that significantly improves upon what students and families experienced last year. Here are just a few of the changes we will be making this fall to improve remote learning:

Remote Learning: What will learning at home look like?

All students should expect to be learning for the full school day and  will receive live real-time instruction for a minimum of three hours per day. In addition to live instruction, students will also have access to  small group instruction, activities with their classmates, and meaningful individual support from their teacher for the remainder of the school day.

Thorp Scholastic Academy will meet these goals by implementing the plan below.

This document summarizes our plan by telling you:

The expectations that we have of our students during this time of remote learning.

How much time your child should be spending on a daily basis in remote learning activities.

What key computer-based learning platforms your child will use.

From your child’s teacher you will also receive:

The schedule of virtual class meeting times as well as how often work will be collected and graded.

How your child can access their teacher, and what they should expect in terms of feedback on work submitted.

How your child can get support during the school day if they are stuck on an assignment.

How they will communicate with parents during our school closure.

This plan may change as teachers get to know their students and students’ stamina for online learning grows. Any significant modifications will be announced.

Expectations and Support

All students at Thorp have been engaged in remote learning activities since the start of our emergency closure in March 2020. Moving forward all Thorp students will engage in online learning with their teachers on a daily basis. Students and parents should reference this Learning at Home Plan for guidance on daily time frames and expectations. We are asking students to engage in their learning on a daily basis and attendance will be taken at each live session. This allows teachers and school staff to monitor students and make sure that they are healthy and engaged. Households whose children have not checked in for more than two consecutive days will be texted at home.

During the course of the week, students will participate in all four core classes: ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  Student engagement will consist of face to face interactions with teachers as well as working independently on their assignments.  Students are responsible for posting their assignments to Google Classroom.  Any pictures of handwritten work should be uploaded to Google Classroom. Students are responsible to attend their scheduled meeting times as well as to drop in during open review sessions for additional support.  Students who are unable or who do not complete their assigned work during our remote sessions will be given additional time to complete their assignments when they return.

All Special Arts classes will happen on Wednesdays. For each hour block, students will be engaged online for about 30 minutes and then work independently offline for the other 30 minutes.

Sample Schedule

The following is a sample student schedule. All teachers will be in their virtual meeting spaces at 7:30AM although different classes may start at different times. Most teachers are taking their lunch at the end of the day from 1:45-2:30 although there will be a transition break that students may be able to use for lunch and teachers will use as un-scheduled conference time. (Teachers shared their actual schedules via email with all parents. Grading Work:

All assigned work will be graded. Teachers will be using the grading features in Google Classroom. Our students and parents are familiar with the traditional approach to grades informing them of their academic performance on a particular assignment. Student grades are a reflection of their academic performance. Please see Thorp’s Student Handbook regarding grading policies.

School Communication Plan

We will send out important whole school-related information via our "Friday Letter" on a weekly basis. Homeroom teachers will be communicating with parents and students via Google Classroom and email on a regular basis.

Our teachers will also conduct virtual class time via Google Meetings on Google Classroom. They will send out a schedule and announcements via Google Classroom with dates and times for all common meeting times. Whole school announcements for students will be sent out through the Thorp Whole School Google Classroom (Code: dqyqqq5).

You can use the following form if you are requesting a Chromebook for home.  Please fill out the Chromebook Agreement.

Our website will serve as our main repository of information. A link to the CPS FAQ will be on our front page as well as the latest district update.

All public meetings will be posted on the Thorp Website. Invites will be sent out via Google Classroom and parent emails.
