Therapy For Black Girls

So often the stigma surrounding mental health issues and therapy prevents Black women from taking the step of seeing a therapist. This space was developed to present mental health topics in a way that feels more accessible and relevant.

Our Mental Health Minute (via Dr. Riana Anderson U-M SPH, Thanks!)

Ri + CT discussed their dreams of bringing psychology content to the community in a fun and relevant way and created this fantastic platform for all to enjoy. With 2 seasons and over 25 episodes on mental health content, they hope to provide materials that are relatable, informative, and helpful in engaging Black people with mental health knowledge and treatment. Ri and CT are determined to make their content grow through videos, podcasts, and online engagement. Their work - both in research and through OurMHM - is for, of, and inspired by the people, and they take no greater pride than being servant leaders through this venture. Their vision is to:

1) Reduce stigma about mental health in the Black community

2) Provide resources in access, utilization, and quality of mental health care

3) Increase mental health literacy (in a fun and relevant way!)

Check out their latest video: Putting Our Necks on the Line: Breathing in the Midst of Racism !!

Mindfulness in Uncertain Times

Tumultuous headlines, health, and financial insecurity, isolation, family tensions… all these can leave us feeling agitated, nervous, just not ourselves.  This class will provide practical support for developing a daily meditation practice that’s appropriate for you (or fine-tuning it, if you have one already); cultivating basic mindfulness skills; and applying those skills in meeting life’s challenges, to respond wisely instead of reacting impulsively.

  • 8 Sundays, May 31 – July 19
  • 2:00-3:00pm, U.S. EDT.
  • Online via Zoom. Includes instruction, a guided practice exercise, and Q-and-A.
  • For ages 17 and up.
  • Fee: by donation

Instructor: Barbara Newell, JD, mindfulness, and meditation teacher. Barbara trained with Thich Nhat Hanh and works regularly with nationally-recognized teachers Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield.  Click here to register

Saline, Ann Arbor, and Ypsilanti Drop-ins.

  • Tuesdays, 11-Noon,
  • Thursdays, 7:30-8:30 pm
  • Fridays, 11-noon, all EDT.

The above sessions are accessed by the same Zoom link and meeting ID. Click https://zoom.us/j/993192822 or call 646-558-8656 and enter Meeting ID: 993 192 822

  • PRIVATE MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION SESSIONS with Barbara Newell, over phone and Zoom. For more information and to schedule a free initial consultation, please contact her directly barbara@barbaranewell.com. You can also check out her podcast here.
  • SHARE and CARE SESSIONS with Pam Schweitzer On Wednesdays, 6-7 pm EDT, the Share and Care group is offered to participants of the Ann Arbor, Saline and Ypsilanti drop-in meditations as an opportunity to discuss concerns and experiences associated with the pandemic since discussion is not part of the open meditations.  It does not include meditation. Click https://zoom.us/j/993192822 or call 646 558 8656 and enter Meeting ID: 993 192 822

Readings on trauma

On piece is on it sharing articles of videos that have images of the murder of either George Floyd or Ahmad Arbery, particularly as thumbnails. This is a trauma porn that focuses on the death of Black bodies (something we never see with white bodies). Here is an article that may be useful for non Black folks in how to not replicate trauma on social media while talking about this.

Minnesota Freedom Fund *** look at their twitter page to learn more about how their funds are distributed before donating ***

Donations can be one time or recurring.

Black Lives Matter

#BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives. Your support of the movement and the ongoing fight to end state-sanctioned violence, liberate Black people, and end white supremacy forever.

Official George Floyd Memorial Fund

This fund is established to cover funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counseling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist our family in the days to come as we continue to seek justice for George.  A portion of these funds will also go to the Estate of George Floyd for the benefit and care of his children and their educational fund.

The Bail Project

The Bail Project is a national Revolving Bail Fund created n to combat mass incarceration and reshape the pretrial system in the United States. 100% of online donations are used to bring people home. Since bail money comes back to us when cases close, we're able to recycle every dollar donated at least twice per year.

Reclaim the Block

A grassroots organization based in Minneapolis, will use funds to address community needs. Reclaim the Block began in 2018 and organizes Minneapolis community and city council members to move money from the police department into other areas of the city’s budget that truly promote community health and safety. We believe health, safety and resiliency exist without police of any kind. We organize around policies that strengthen community-led safety initiatives and reduce reliance on police departments. We do not believe that increased regulation of or public engagement with the police will lead to safer communities, as community testimony and documented police conduct suggest otherwise.

Louisville Community Bail Fund

The Louisville Community Bail Fund exists to not only bail out folks, but provide post-release support to get them from jail, fed, and to a situation of safety. LCBF also maintains a focus on preventative measures for those targeted by law enforcement and threatened with incarceration. While we work with national networks, we are also one of the only bail funds that rely entirely on support from individuals in our social justice community.

Black Visions Collective

Organization based in Minnesota, led by black queer/trans folks (thanks for the addition Akemi!), that  focuses its work on transformative justice in the state. aim to center our work in healing and transformative justice principles, intentionally develop our organizations core “DNA” to ensure sustainability, and develop Minnesota’s emerging Black leadership to lead powerful campaigns. By building movements from the ground up with an integrated model, we are creating the conditions for long term success and transformation. Black Visions Collective envisions a world in which ALL Black Lives Matter. We use the guidance and brilliance of our ancestors as well as the teachings of our own experiences to pursue our commitment to dismantling systems of oppression and violence. We are determined in our pursuit of dignity and equity for all.

Hello [recipient],

I am writing to you in regards to the incident that occurred at 100 High Park Avenue on May 27th, 2020. A 29 year-old Black woman, Regis, has died after allegedly falling off her balcony, despite police being present.

As a concerned citizen, I am very upset and disturbed at the events that took place and the allegations that this caused on the part of the police. I am demanding justice and answers as to the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet.

A complete and transparent public and independent investigation needs to take place. Charges need to be brought to all the officers involved, as well as all information and evidence should be made available to the public.

Sincerely,

Additional Resources:

Please feel free to add additional resources! This guide is primarily Michigan centered as this started as a resources guide for current students in the area. If you would like to add resources for your specific city (Los Angeles, Atlanta, DMV, etc) that would be awesome! Let us know which local organizations to support, which lawmakers need their phones and inboxes blown up, and where the next protest or meet up is at! You can either add them down here or you can place them in the set categories above.

Hello All! Thank you so much for contributing to this document over the weekend. I did not expect this kind of response although this (and more) is the recognition this movement deserves.  Although I love the community that continues to inform and update this document, it has taken on a life of its own and we want to make sure it remains a space SPECIFICALLY for RESOURCES. With that, the comments have been turned off. Please know that this is a living document and will be updated accordingly. If you have any resources or information that you would like to add please contact us (DM) at @MedicinalMelanin_ on Instagram or request access!
