NYU STUDENT SENATORS COUNCIL PASSES RESOLUTION FOR DECARBONIZATION
New York, NY - Oct. 25th, 2018 - This morning, the NYU Student Senators Council passed NYU Divest’s “Resolution for Decarbonization” nearly unanimously, with 0 against, and 3 abstentions.
The Resolution calls on NYU to join Boston University and Maui College, as well as 86 U.S. cities, and commit to reaching 100% renewable electricity. Further, it calls on NYU to take global leadership by committing to 100% renewable heating, cooling, and transportation by 2040 – therefore making NYU a truly fossil-free university. It also corrects some serious flaws in NYU’s current response to the climate crisis by expanding climate action to NYU’s global sites, and reassessing and publicizing the climate and pollution impacts of the Washington Square campus’ reliance on fracked gas, which powers its Cogeneration Plant. Mounting research shows that the climate impacts of natural gas are likely equivalent to those of coal, and that fracking poses an environmental justice crisis to local communities who live and work near sites of drilling, transportation, combustion, and waste.
The Resolution for Decarbonization has received endorsements from the two other major sustainability student groups on the Washington Square campus, Earthmatters and SproutUp, as well as the Governance Council of Minority and Marginalized Students, the Urban Democracy Lab, and the Incarceration to Education Coalition. Divest expects the Resolution for Decarbonization to be presented at the University Senate on November 8th, 2018.
Divest is organizing a rally to show student and community support for this resolution that day:
