Athens Black-Owned Businesses 2016-and beyond
This list is not a comprehensive list of all of the African American businesses in Athens GA. The parameters for this list include businesses with a business license that are accessible through online stores or through a walk-in service in an actual building or truck (i.e ice cream truck). Keep in mind that an updated comprehensive list of African American businesses does not exist outside of this one, so this one will be evolving with the addition of businesses that fit the criteria. I may not be familiar with every business that fits these criteria in Athens, GA, so feel free to message me via social media or via email at blflaniga@gmail.com with recommendations.
As you may or may not notice my personal business is not even on the list. This list is to serve the small businesses that already exist that may not currently have a strong marketing presence, or volume, or the ability to get out and network.
To patrons: As you patronize these businesses and you feel that you may be able to offer a suggestion to help. Please keep in mind that some owners may receive this well and others may not. I suggest for every business to create a comment box so that they can filter these messages and apply things that fit their comfort level. If you are verbally making suggestions please do so in a respectful manner and keep in mind the reason that this shift in consciously supporting Black businesses is taking place. As these already established businesses grow they can hire our youth and help other prospective business owners to become legitimate establishments. It is this type of selflessness that builds strong communities. #SpreadLove
To African American business owners: When/if you start to receive a higher customer volume it is imperative to hold yourself to a high standard and good business ethics. This does not mean compare yourself to or assimilate to the practices of a non-Black business. Simply stated….. do good business so that you can build a repeat customer base. I suggest to the restaurants, have extra staff on standby to deal with higher volume. I’m not saying go out and buy a lot of extra products. I think people will understand you running out of certain items. I would rather you be prepared with staff than to have extra supplies.
