Saturday 4/20:

  • Thousand Hills Earth Day Festival
  • Time: 10am-1pm
  • Location: Beach Parking Lot at Thousand Hills
  • Group(s): Thousand Hills Park Staff
  • Description: Thousand Hills is holding their second annual event celebrating Earth Day! Community and campus organizations will table with activities and information. The Sustainability Office will be tabling to collect batteries.

  • Watershed Clean Up
  • Time: 1-3pm
  • Location: Bear Creek by West Campus Suites
  • Group(s): Grassroots Environmentalism Students, MO Department of Conservation, and John Nash
  • Description: Join students and environmental organizations to clean up Bear Creek!

Sunday 4/21: 

  • Hike with TruOutdoors
  • Time: 12-2pm
  • Location: Hike at Thousand Hills, meet in the Rec parking lot at noon to carpool (Trail: Redbud Trail, trailhead closest to the beach)
  • Group(s): TruOutdoors
  • Description: Get outside! Bring a friend or come alone to hike with TruOutdoors at Thousand Hills. The Redbud Trail is a short trail around the lake—no experience necessary.

Monday 4/22:

  • Scavenger Hunt
  • Time: Opens Monday at 10am, prizes available until Friday
  • Location: Anywhere! (Turn in completed hunt to the Sustainability Office, VH 1310)
  • Group(s): TruOutdoors and the Sustainability Office
  • Description: During Earth Week 2024, TruOutdoors and the Sustainability Office want to encourage you to get outside. If you bring a picture of the twelve natural items listed on the Scavenger Hunt Doc to the Office, you can exchange them for 1 free sticker AND a voucher for 1 free item from the clothing swap! Limit one completed scavenger hunt per person. (Hint: Feel free to use google to help you out with identifying the more specific of these objects.)

  • Terracotta Pot Painting
  • Time: 6-7:30pm
  • Location: SUB Down Under
  • Group(s): Environmental Campus Organization (ECO) and the Compost Project
  • Description: Paint mini terracotta pots with ECO, and take them home to add to (or start) your house plant collection. Research shows that engaging with plants helps our mental health and connects us to the environment. The Compost Project will be providing compost and wildflower seed grab-bags for those who want to get their hands dirty.

  • Stargazing Open House
  • Time: 7:30-9pm
  • Location: University Observatory at the University Farm (see observatory.truman.edu for map)
  • Group(s): Stargazers Astronomy Club
  • Description: Every Monday, weather permitting, Stargazers invites any and all Truman students to stargaze at the farm. Bring a blanket and some friends (or plan to make new ones) and get ready to chat, look skyward, and get a constellation tour complete with myths from some amateur astronomical enthusiasts in the club.

Tuesday 4/23:

  • Slacklining
  • Time: 4:30-6pm
  • Location: The Quad
  • Group(s): Campus Rec Center
  • Description: Slacklining is the art of walking on a flat line strung between two trees. It’s a fun way to get exercise, make friends, and appreciate the outdoors! Rec staff host this event, open for all experiences, twice weekly with weather permitting. In case of rain, slacklining will be canceled.

  • Description: Have you ever wondered what screen printing looks like when it’s not being done by a factory? Us too! If you ordered an Earth Week 2024 t-shirt, you can see how that exact design comes to life. Either way, we invite you to attend this demo and consider partnering with the Bad Acids or other local printers for your next round of club merch.

  • Description: Earth Fest is an opportunity for campus and community organizations to come together to celebrate sustainability. After a long week of events, groups will table with activities and information related to their corner of sustainability. It’s designed to be an eclectic event because, say it with us now, Environmentalism Is For Everyone! There will be live music! And shelter animals! Events co-occurring with Earth Fest include the Greenhouse Plant Clinic and the Clothing Swap. Other highlights: Student Government will have sustainable items such as shampoo/conditioner bars, menstrual cups, and vegan food!

  • Description: Do you have a handful of clothing that you’re ready to give up? Looking to refresh your wardrobe? Bring your clean clothes (no graphic tees other than Truman ones, please) to the Sustainability Office in VH 1310 during open hours and fill out the simple form to record your donation.   • Description: Got a plant whose health is giving you grief? Place it in the greenhouse staff’s capable hands and get diagnosis and treatment as applicable. Leave your house plants feeling good as new!

  • Description: The fine folks of RHA frequently hold trivia in Ryle’s Main Lounge. This time, they’ve agreed to host an environmental-themed trivia night, with the questions being written by staff in the Sustainability Office. Come on down!

  • Outdoor Mushroom Production Workshop
  • Time: 12-3pm

  • Description: The University Farm will host two free outdoor mushroom production workshops from 12-3pm April 27 and May 4. Students will learn the basics of outdoor mushroom production and inoculate their own mushroom log to take home.
