Emergency - Immediate Action Needed to Help Peaceful Protestors being ATTACKED in India.

Greetings,

I am writing to you at a time of great urgency. As you may be aware, farmers in India have been protesting unfair farm laws and privatization since September 2020. Farmers from across  India have gathered in Delhi to protest the amendment of said laws peacefully. These three agricultural reform laws dramatically change the procurement system. That will bring an end to the Minimum Support Price (MSP), drastically affecting vulnerable, small farmers and day labourers' livelihoods. Farmers have demanded that the government guarantee the MSP in writing to prevent corporate exploitation under the new law reforms.

Unfortunately, recently, peaceful protestors, including seniors and women, have been attacked by Delhi police, armed forces, and BJP/RSS mobs. On January 26, thousands of farmers marched to Delhi to protest; police forces blocked their path by erecting barriers, attacking the protestors with water cannons and tear gas, and night raids on where protestors have slept. The situation has gotten worse, as aforementioned, in the past few days. Delhi police and BJP/RSS mobs are attacking peaceful protestors with tear gas, pelting rocks at them, attacking them with brute force, breaking down their tents, cutting electricity, water supplies, and destroying means of transportation as well as medic aid stations.

Disturbing images of police brutality and mob attacks on innocent civilians have sent shockwaves throughout the global community as protestors continue to express their frustrations with farming laws. Delhi police and the Indian government have a long history of violence against minority groups. Many are worried about their family and friends in India protesting who continue to-face human rights violations, such as police beatings, unlawful arrest, food and water supplies being cut, media blackouts, to name a few.

Earlier, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had voiced support for India's protestors and had even mentioned that Canada will always support peaceful protest. For that very reason, I am writing to you today. Canada has been praised as a "Peacekeeping Nation" in the past. We are looking for your action against India and asking PM Modi to bring an end to this and listen to peaceful protestors asking for farm bills to be overturned or revised. India has been known to be the "World’s Largest Democracy," and we ask that Canada ensures that it acts accordingly.

Please issue a formal statement about this situation. Much of the Canadian population is of South Asian descent, including many Elected officials across Canada. We look to the support of our Canadian government especially following recent attacks on peaceful protestors. As my representative, I am calling on you to speak on this issue and help drive action to protect the rights, liberties, and, most importantly, my community's safety and well-being of those protestors in India.

Canada is an international leader in protecting peace, and we must act on these values at this time. I hope to hear from you soon about what you might be able to do to help.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
