POLICY FOR RECOMMENDATION, INDEPENDENT STUDIES, CAPSTONE AND THESIS RESEARCH

STUDENTS
: If you do not meet the criteria below, you are encouraged to seek reference or thesis advice from other faculty members, those who you did best in their classes.   

~I~  LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION  ~~~

Students who wish to seek Dr. Chang’s letter of recommendation in job, school, and scholarship application must have an overall GPA of at least 3.2 (B, 82%) and Chinese GPA of at least 3.7 (A-, 90%).  (Exception: If GPA in Dr. Chang’s face-to-face 3000-4000 level courses is at least 3.8 ( A-, 92%), the overall GPA does not need to be at least 3.2 (B, 82%)).

At least a three-week notice before the deadline.

~II~  CHE 3920  DIRECTED READINGS IN CHINESE  ~~~
~~~  CHE 4800  INDEPENDENT TRANSLATION PROJECT  ~~~
~~~  IS 4995      DIRECTED RESEARCH IN CHINESE STUDIES  ~~~

PURPOSE
CHE 3920 and CHE 4800 Independent Study courses allow students to explore academic areas of special interest not provided by the existing curriculum. It is carried out under the guidance of a member of the faculty.
Capstone courses, such as IS 4995 Directed Research in Chinese Studies, prepares students to demonstrate: (i) appropriate uses of a variety of methods of inquiry and a recognition of ethical considerations that arise; (ii) the ability to integrate the knowledge learned in general education and its relevance to the student’s life and career. ELIGIBILITY
Students who wish to take CHE 3920, CHE 4800, or IS 4995 with Dr. Chang
must be senior students in “Chinese Language Minor” and must have an overall GPA of at least 3.5 (B+, 87%) and Chinese GPA in Dr. Chang’s face-to-face 2000-4000 level courses is at least 3.8 (A-, 92%), no exceptions.
In addition, students who wish to take CHE 4800 with Dr. Chang
must be senior or graduate students and must obtain at least 3.8 (A-, 92%) in both CHE 3550 and 4550, no exceptions. 

STUDENTS: If you do not meet the criteria above, you are encouraged to seek Independent Study opportunity with another faculty member - someone who you did best in his/her classes.

CONTENT of CHE 3920, CHE 4800, and IS 4995

Students enrolling in these courses with Dr. Chang should fulfill the following course requirements.

  1. Minimal outcome: a paper, a presentation file, and/or a poster.
  2. Write a research paper with a topic related to Chinese linguistics.

English paper: 10-20 pages, double-spaced, font 12.

Chinese paper: 5-10 pages, double-spaced, font 12.
The length for CHE 4800 and IS 4995 may be substantially longer.

  1. By the end of the 1st month, read at least 100 pages of research papers or materials (English and Chinese) before writing a one-page single-spaced proposal.
  2. By mid-term evaluation submission day, submit the 1st draft of the paper.
  3. Submit the paper abstract to a conference for presentation.
  4. Present the paper in the student research forum of Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and at the Meeting of the Minds conference.

~III~  SENIOR’S, MASTER’S OR DOCTORAL THESIS  ~~~

Students who wish to write a thesis under Dr. Chang’s supervision must be a “Chinese Language Minor” student and must have an overall GPA of at least 3.5 (B+, 87%) and Chinese GPA in Dr. Chang’s face-to-face 2000-4000 level courses is at least 3.9 (A, 95%), no exceptions.

  1. The topic of the thesis must be directly related to Chinese education and pedagogy or Chinese linguistics -- such as syntax, semantics, and language acquisition.
  2. Minimal outcome: a paper, a presentation file, and/or a poster.
  3. Students must submit the paper abstract to a conference for presentation.
  4. Undergraduate students must present the thesis in the student research forum of Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and at the Meeting of the Minds conference.

STUDENTS: If you do not meet the criteria above, you are encouraged to seek thesis advice from other faculty members, those who you did best in their classes.  


For II and III, (1) check spelling (use spelling and grammar check tool), (2) check Chinese pinyin spelling, (3) proof-read the whole paper carefully

~IV~~  STUDY ABROAD  ~~~

Students who wish to seek Dr. Chang’s recommendation to study at China Foreign Affairs University or National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan for a semester or more must have an overall GPA of at least 3.2 (B, 82%) and Chinese GPA of at least 3.8 (A-, 92%).  

Even for students who meet the above requirements, Dr. Chang reserves the right to reject the request at her discretion.
