The majority of r/statenisland users are in their early or late twenties. Two users reported being under 13 years old, but based on their other responses, I concluded they were fooling, so they were excluded.
The majority of r/statenisland users are male. This is also true of Reddit as a whole. A survey in 2016 found that 63.1% of Reddit users identify as male.
Analysis was done by counting the number of times an ethnic identity was listed. Most users chose not to provide detail, but to use broad categories like “white” and “hispanic.”
“None at all. Everyone is equal in my eyes.”
“staten island italian y’know what i’m sayin”
“Crumpled pack of newports”
It appears the majority of our users did not go to high school on the Island. If I forgot your high school on the list, message it to me or include it in the comments.
The majority of our users are students, however there were a wide variety of jobs listed. Please check out the word cloud for them all.
Next, I looked at union membership within select groups of users. Midisland users have the greatest union membership.
UNION MEMBERSHIP BY AGE
UNION MEMBERSHIP BY LOCATION
UNION MEMBERSHIP BY POLITICS
As kindly noted by a user “How is ferry not a transit option?” … My bad.
There was no significant difference in North versus South Shore residents responses to this question.
Native New Yorkers
Note: Some users were born and raise, left after 18, and came back to settle down.
Never been to SI
“40s behind nunzios and handys under the boardwalk”
The majority of users did not take this question seriously. Most did not skip it, but instead willfully declared: No. However, this Island does have many successful and interesting people! Check out the word cloud all of our user’s favorites.
“Gustave Mayer, inventor of the Nilla wafer
“That guy that calls everyone ‘chief’”
“The BDBDBDBDBDBD guy on the ferry”
“The guy who works at the wrestling stand in the mall”
“The guy who got stabbed on the R train at 12:53 in the morning and still made the 1 a.m. boat”
Denino’s wins again. The few of you who committed treason and voted for places in Brooklyn and Manhattan are now banned. JK! but your responses were removed.
This analysis looked at the relationship between three questions: (1) How much do you like Staten Island? (2) How often do you leave the Island for recreation, entertainment, and social events? (3) How much do you enjoy our subreddit? Responses were made on a discrete scale of 1 to 10.
On average, users are lukewarm in their love for both the Island and this subreddit. The dots below represent the means, the lines are the confidence intervals, and the “violins” show the entire distribution of responses. You can see, the results are noisy!
To make more sense out of these responses, I looked for correlations. There were two significant correlations. First, those who leave the island more often, like the island less. Second, those who like the island tend to also like the sub.
Yes. North Shore users like Staten Island more than South Shore users (t(127)=3.34, p<0.01). In fact, South Shore users actually leave the Island more for entertainment and social events than North Shore or Midisland users (F(2)=4.42,p<0.05). However, physical distance loses its meaning on the Internet: We find no differences amongst Midisland, North, or South Shore users’ enjoyment of the subreddit, on average.
“I easily feel superior to those around me”
“The friends I've come to love and cherish there and their resiliency in life.”
“24 hour deli anytime bagels fam”
“The chilly solitude of standing outside on the ferry at 1 a.m. in the winter, watching the lights and the water”
Despite liking the Island for its “isolation” some users feel, perhaps, too isolated:
“There are some things I really enjoy about living here, but I've lived here for a year and a half and have yet to meet a single person to hang out with. Everyone here seems to be of a different breed”
“When you are surrounded by water and it costs $16 to get home, of course you're going to have skells and 40 years moms chugging down oxycodone 30 mg 280 qty to treat their anxiety and disappointments in life.”
“Staten island is 30 years behind the times. Sometimes I forget we are legit a borough of NYC. “
Staten Island isn’t just pizza and parks. It is a home to interesting, unique, loving people. Your responses taught me new things about the Island. I split my sides laughing at some of your more sarcastic responses, but I was also deeply touched by some of your more heartfelt responses. I feel closer to this community after this survey, and I hope you do as well. Thank you for taking our survey and for participating in our sub.
