Fake It 'Til You Make Out

mualani and yoimiya need to kiss!!!

The beginning of spring is here. The birds were chirping, the flowers were blooming, and everyone had a smile on their face. Spring is known as a new beginning, a calm way to begin the new year, and a warm exit from winter. But for the high schoolers, it is known as the most awaited and exciting season. As spring is when the High School Soccer Championships begin. Everyone was excited for the new season. They couldn’t wait to see what their schools had to offer. The student council's events, the teachers preparing rallies, the cheerleaders showing their practiced routines, and the soccer team themselves. The student body was just as excited for this new season as they were in previous years. As the students walk into the first day of the new season, the captain of the cheer team seems to be looking around anxiously. They keep looking until a familiar voice calls them from behind. “Hey Mua! '' Mualani turns around to see it’s Ayaka, co-captain of the soccer team and Mualani’s best friend.''Oh! Hey Ayaya! I’m happy to see you!” Mualani gives Ayaka a big hug “Haha, same for you, too!”  They turn and walk through the doors of the building and to their lockers.

“So,” Ayaka turns to ask Mualani, “are you ready for this season?” This is Mualani’s first season as captain of the cheer squad. Mualani remembers the try-outs for captain and still couldn’t believe they'd officially made it. “Yeah.. I still can’t believe I’m actually the captain. It was like yesterday I was just a little first year starting out, hoping to make the team!” “I know! It’s so surreal.” Mualani lets out a little laugh, “I’m just happy to finally be where I want to be, and as the new captain, I’ll make sure our squad gives our biggest support!” They both laugh as they leave their lockers. “Do you think we’ll be in the same class this time, Ayaya?” Ayaka sighed,  “I hope so, I mean it’s been three years!” As they walk up to the huge crowd surrounding the board, Mualani quickly runs up to the crowd. Mualani squishies through the students to get to the front. They look around for the third year classes. “Aha!” Mualani drags her hand along the paper looking for their name. There it is, class 4. Mualani looks over the list, hoping to find Ayaka’s name. “Come on, come on!”  Mualani keeps dragging her finger until she finally finds her name. “AH! There she is, Ayaka Kamisato. Class … 5?” Mualani was too focused to notice they had passed the list for class 4 and had gone down to class 5.

Mualani sadly squishies back out of the crowd and sees Ayaka standing there. “So?” Ayaka asked Mualani eagerly. “No shot, another year with different classes.” Mualani pouts, she can’t believe just how unlucky they are. “I mean how unlucky do you have to be to not get a single class together!” “Ahh, it’s ok Mualani,” Ayaka hugs her, “Maybe next year will be our year, but the classes have already been decided, so no reason to mop about it. Instead, let’s focus on our sports and getting ready for the new season!” Ayaka looks down at Mualani, smiling. “WAAA AYAYAAAAAAA!” Mualani hugs her back. She was so lucky to have such a good best friend.

“That being said, did you see who was in your class?” Mualani widens her eyes. They totally forgot. “AHH! No, I was too busy trying to find your name. I never saw who was in my class!” “Ok, ok. Calm down- Where are you-?” Mualani quickly squishies back through the crowd. “Ahh, that girl.”

Mualani walks Ayaka to the door of her classroom, gives her one last hug goodbye, and then slowly makes her way to their door. Mualani crosses her arms, “Tsk, and I just know I’m going to have the mean kids in my class. The crowd was too big, I couldn’t see the board at all! I’m just going to hope I get lucky.” Mualani walks into the classroom, “Eh, looks like we don’t have assigned seats.” They walked to a desk that’s closest to the window, put her bag down, and plopped down at her seat. She puts her head in their hand and starts scrolling on her phone. A few minutes later, someone taps them on the shoulder. “AHHH! Who the?” Mualani turns around quickly to see it’s Kinich.

They jump up and give her a big hug. “Oh my gosh! I’m so happy to have at least one person I know here!” “I’m guessing this wasn’t the year?” “No! Can you believe it? What makes it worse is that Ayaka’s in class 5! That’s literally right next door.” Mualani slouched back into their seat. Kinich pulls out and sits in the seat right next to her. “Did you not read-” “No I was too busy looking for Ayaka’s name.” Kinich laughs, “Man, you really are that unlucky” “Don’t mention it.” One thing Mualani could be happy about is sharing a class with Kinich, there’s just something different about sharing a class with your sibling.

The other kids start walking into the classroom. Some of them were people who Mualani and Kinch kinda knew, some were rude who gave Mualani a dirty look, some were kids from other sports, and the rest were just other students. The ones who really caught Mualani’s attention were the kids from the soccer team. Mualani, being a cheerleader and best friends with the co-captain of the team, knew them pretty well. They were making a big crowd at the door, and only three of them walked in while the rest went to their different classes. Mualani knew these three the best.

There was Thoma, Ayaka’s brother's best friend. He was really nice and helped Mualani with assignments and classes she struggled with last year. He is also one of the only people Mualani feels they can trust at this school. Then, there was Scara, one of Ayaka’s boyfriends. Scara has been Ayaka's boyfriend since they started high school. The couple Mualani thought would never happen. He’s not really the nicest person around, but Mualani could tell under his tough persona, he was just a wet little cat. Mualani personally liked Cyno more, he was funnier. And Finally, Yoimiya. The captain of the soccer team and probably the most well known person on campus (and off campus).

Yoimiya is known as a soccer legend. Yoimiya tried out for captain his first year here and made it first try. Not only that, he was also the best member on the team. For the past three years, Yoimiya has brought the school to victory at the championships. Yoimiya was the friendliest, smartest, most athletic person ever. Everyone either wanted to be or be with Yoimiya. Well, everyone except Mualani. Mualani never got the hype.

“Like ok, he’s literally the most perfect person ever, but seriously?” Mualani remembers complaining about him to Ayaka during their second year. “You seem really jealous of Yoimiya’s achievements, Mua.” Ayaka takes a sip of her drink. “Uh-what-huh-ME? Jealous oh no, no, no.” “Well it sounds like it. Everytime you bring up Yoimiya it’s always to complain about how ‘perfect’ he is'' Mualani’s face turns red. “Look, I’m not jealous. Ok, maybe a little, BUT I really don’t understand how crazy people go over him. Yeah, he’s a cool person, but… I don’t know.” Mualani puts her head in her palms. Ayaka sighs, “I get it Mualani. It’s ok, but try to be a little nicer about him? I have a feeling you two would be great friends if you just tried to get to know him.” “I don’t know about friends, but I’ll try to have a better outlook on him. Thanks Ayaya.” “Any time.”

Mualani lets out a little chuckle as they turn to face the window. Kinich looks over at Mualani, and turns to face them. “You ok?” Mualani turns their head around, “Yes, I’m fine.” “Then why are you so pale?” Mualani and Kinich both jump and turn to the direction of the voice. “Ah, sorry! Didn’t mean to scare you. I noticed you when I walked in and couldn’t help but come over and say hi!” It was Yoimiya. Mualani looked him up and down. “Oh it’s just you.. Hi Yoimiya.” “Hey, what’s wrong?” Mualani looked back at the window, “Nothing’s wrong, I just feel really tired.” “Oh, would you like some of my coffee? It will give you a big energy boost!” “No thanks.” They stay in silence for a while until Kinich opens his mouth. “So! Yoimiya, are you excited for this season?” Yoimiya shines as he looks at Kinich. “Yes! I know this year our team is going to crush it at championships!” “They do every year.” Mualani looks up at Yoimiya with an unamused face. “Well, You do at least.” Yoimiya looks to the side. “What do you mean?” “You know what I mean. The only reason our school has won championships is because of you, don’t be so modest, it's very impressive.” “Hey! It’s a group effort. Everyone puts in their all to help our team win, I am not the only one doing the work!” “Oh,” Mualani thought, “He’s such a sweetheart he can’t accept self praise, it’s kinda cute.” Mualani immediately blushes at the thought and starts swatting near her face. “Ok, I get it. You all work very hard, don't worry I’ve seen it.” “Really?” Yoimiya leans over the table, “You know, I also watch the cheer teams practice. You all do so good! Such beauty in the air, and your formations are perfect. As expected from our team and our beautiful and amazing captain!” Mualani blushes at the compliment. “Ah, thank you Yoimiya, that’s very sweet of you.” Yoimiya opens his mouth when the door slams open. “Alright everyone,” the teacher puts their books down on their desk. “Sit down in a seat, class announcements are about to begin.” Yoimiya looks back at Mualani and whispers, “I’ll tell you during break.” and hurries back to his desk. Mualani looks over at Kinich, who’s putting his phone away. Mualani looks back at the front, and puts their head back into their hand. “Yoimiya really isn’t that bad, maybe Ayaka is right. I wouldn’t mind becoming his friend.”
