To President Wayne D. Lewis, Jr. and other Houghton administrators:
As alumni of Houghton University, we are grateful for the Christian liberal arts education we received there. We are driven to write this letter from a place of concern and grief over recent actions that we believe do not live up to Houghton’s vision.
Houghton offered us certain unique strengths that have served us well as we have gone on to “lead and labor as scholar-servants in a changing world,” just as we were charged to do at our commencement. No matter our major or discipline, our time at Houghton taught us to love questions, dialogue, and nuance. Houghton instilled in us the understanding that faithful and committed Christians interpret scripture in varying ways and therefore have a range of views on contemporary theological, political, and sociocultural issues. Perhaps most importantly, Houghton encouraged us to be sincere and charitable toward one another when these disagreements rise to the surface. We learned that we shouldn’t be quick to arrogantly assume our own view is surely the correct one, and that instead, we should take time to listen to differing perspectives with compassion.
Of course, faculty were a primary means through which we were taught to dialogue with curiosity, charity, and respect, but the Houghton community and experience also extend beyond the classroom; as such, other contexts and interactions also provided opportunities to practice these principles. For example, in chapel, invitations were regularly extended to speakers who did not fully align with the doctrine of the Wesleyan church. In the Houghton Star, we had a “Two Views” column in which students shared opposing opinions on contentious issues. Finally, although we don’t wish to be naïve and suggest that the entire campus was saturated in ideal harmony at all times, this spirit of mutual respect and dialogue was also generally present in residence life and in interactions between students and staff.
Because Houghton shaped us into persons who value dialogue, we reacted with alarm and confusion to recent changes on campus. In particular, we refer to closing the Mosaic Multicultural Center and the Center for Sustainability; firing residence life staff for refusing to remove pronouns from their email signatures and expressing their personal beliefs publicly; deleting respectful comments made by students and alumni on some of the One Day Giving Challenge social media posts; and moving the Houghton Rock to a less visible and accessible location. We realize that the stated reason for some of these decisions is the budget, and we are aware that the past few years have strained the finances of Christian liberal arts institutions in particular. However, the budget reflects the priorities of an institution, and furthermore, not all of the above decisions can be justified by budget limitations.
Our overall concern is that these recent changes demonstrate a concerning pattern of failure on the part of the current administration to respect that faithful and active Christians reasonably hold a range of theological and ethical views, and in turn, failure to allow for genuine dialogue about these differing views. In this way, Houghton is not living up to its own ideals. The Houghton vision for common life applies to the entire Houghton community and states “We make room for difference of opinion: we dialogue well.” We understand that there are different expectations for students and employees about what this dialogue can and should look like. However, we believe that students, particularly those with marginalized identities, may not feel safe to engage in such dialogue when they observe that faculty and staff are prohibited from it and that designated spaces for it are withdrawn.
To this end, we would like to see the current Houghton administration unequivocally affirm their commitment to charitable and respectful dialogue, not just in speech, but also in action. In particular, we request that the institution acknowledge that there is a range of views reasonably held by faithful and active Christians on topics of gender, sexuality, and race. In practice, this would mean a broadened understanding of the views that are acceptable for staff, faculty, and chapel speakers to hold and express.
We, the undersigned, represent a wide range of religious traditions, political affiliations, and social identities. We acknowledge that we disagree with one another on issues that have become increasingly contentious in recent years. However, we all agree that a Houghton education must make room for these exact differences and disagreements. We write with hopefulness that Houghton University will welcome curious and compassionate dialogue on differing ideas rather than making efforts to ignore, silence, and penalize faculty, staff, students, and alumni who attempt to engage in these conversations. We insist our voices be heard because we care deeply about Houghton and its future. We want it to once again be a place that we are proud to call our alma mater and would enthusiastically recommend to the next generation.
