Please answer the following questions as clearly and completely as possible in 250 words each.

  1. Why does this trip interest you?

I grew up in the deep South, in Richmond County, South Carolina. I went to a school named after James Henry Hammond, which was founded in 1966 as a segregation academy. President Carter had to send the National Guard to enforce desegregation of the school. I had lived in England till I was 10, and I moved to South Carolina the year the confederate flag was taken down in the capital building in Columbia. My parents were naive to the way of the South, as it is very romanticized literature and media. I did not find the, “Southern Hospitality” my family had heard of, instead I found a hostile state. I moved back to Massachusetts at the end of 2019, and I have spent my time trying to educate myself and others about the South, and I think this trip is an amazing opportunity to show others that have lived in Massachusetts their entire lives what the rest of the country is like, and also to continue my own education and further my understanding of the South and its history, and how it impacts it today.

  1. What about you makes you a good candidate for this experience?

I lived in the south during the Trump presidency, and unlike many of my peers, I have the experience of living in the South and I think I have a unique perspective of what it is like to live there, especially in such a tense and polarizing time in our recent history. I want to further educate myself, and I am open to learning and helping others who might not know what to expect on this trip.
