FAQ:

ACCEPT strongly advocates moving National College Decision Day from May 1, 2020 to June 1, 2020 or later. We believe this change is best for applicants and their families, colleges, and schools. Why?

ACCEPT also acknowledges and thanks the many colleges that offer rolling admissions and do not have a set deadline for enrollment. We appreciate all the modes of higher education who are reaching out!!

For applicants and their families:

  • As of March 23, over 45 states have closed schools state-wide, some for the remainder of the school year. Most large cities have closed their public schools, and many non-public schools are following their lead. This number will continue to grow in the coming weeks.
  • The financial impact of the coronavirus is devastating, and certainly will touch everyone. It’s deeply unfair to ask anyone at this moment to commit to spending $40-80,000/year while everything is so unsettled.
  • For admitted applicants, they will have very limited opportunities to visit campuses...without students.
  • This disruption will make good counseling, especially about financial aid, incredibly difficult despite everyone’s best efforts.

For colleges:

  • Some college admissions offices may not be able to finalize decisions, distribute decision letters, and process financial aid packages in the “typical” timeframe.
  • College admissions and financial aid staff will be working remotely; there will be service disruptions, and this could make interactions between and among students, parents, and staff difficult.
  • Campus visit days have been cancelled, and admitted students will have few, if any, opportunities to visit before May 1.
  • It is likely that the financial devastation caused by the coronavirus will cause more families to request aid and with higher need than before this crisis. New financial realities for both applicants and current students will greatly impact financial aid professionals over the next six weeks and beyond.

For schools:

  • While schools are doing their best to provide college guidance at a distance, the disruption will make good counseling, especially about financial aid, incredibly difficult.
  • Schools will need additional time to design and implement new end-of-year assessments given in highly unusual circumstances.
  • Getting “final” transcripts to colleges will be a herculean effort, and will happen only after a million other problems are solved. This will not be a priority for schools, and that’s entirely appropriate.

Why not just wait for applicants to request an extension?

  • Saying “individuals can ask for extensions” is not helpful. You know who'd be least likely to ask for an extension? The ones who are least savvy: Students who are low income, first generation, and/or students of color.

Most of all...

  • People. Need. Time. To. Sort. This. Stuff. Out.

Who thinks it's a good idea to extend the deposit deadline to June 1 or later?

  • The students in this story by CNN
  • The students in this story by the Washington Post
  • The students in this story by the Chronicle of Higher Ed

  • The Cristo Rey network of schools think it's a good idea to extend the deadline to June 1 or later "Extend the candidate reply deadline to June 1, 2020 (as many colleges are doing at this time). We suggest that this change is best for applicants and their families, colleges, and schools. This equity-minded action on your part may be preferable to requiring individuals to ask for an extension. Cristo Rey Network students, like many others, are predominantly low-income, first-generation, and students of color. A deadline extension is the most equitable response for all prospective students."

  • NACAC says it's a good idea "Extending the May 1 deposit deadline could be very beneficial this year in light of the current limitations on large group gatherings and travel. We understand that financial or administrative challenges might make it impossible for some colleges to relax their deadlines, but we urge institutions to be as flexible as possible in these difficult times."
  • NACAC former president, David Burge, "George Mason University, where I have the privilege to serve, has moved the deposit date back to June 1. Because if it were my kids trying to pick a college during this yuck, I wouldn’t want them worrying about this too."
  • And #RealCollege thinks it’s a good idea "Extend your decision deadline and do it now. Students and families are unlikely to be in a position to make decisions on where they can attend college at this time, even if they are, decisions made under stress are unlikely to be decisions that stick, so keeping a May 1 deadline is likely to ruin yield predictions and lead to increased summer melt. Jon Boeckenstedt has a great thread on some of the reasons why extending your deadline makes sense. It is worth noting that colleges that respond quickly and with compassion at this time are likely to be viewed more favorably by students and families when they do make their final decisions"
