Write Issue Letters to Canadian Politicians

Writing and mailing a letter to your MP or the Prime Minister is an easy and effective ways to let them know a) you are holding them accountable for their policies, and b) that specific issues are important to their constituents.

Sending a letter to Parliament or the Prime Minister does not require a stamp.

1. Pick a Topic

A) Voter Registration cards ➡ Letter Template

In 2014, the Harper government passed a law stating that the voter registration cards you receive in the mail are not considered valid ID for voting in federal elections. This means people without driver’s licences, who don’t pay for utilities, who are renting or are homeless, may not be able to vote. Tell our politicians we want voter registration cards reinstated as a valid form of voter ID.

B) Short Hills ➡ Letter Template

Call on the Ministry of Natural Resources in Ontario to stop supporting illegal blockades that prevent Indigenous treaty hunters from accessing land in Short Hills Provincial Park for legal treaty hunts in November and December of 2017, in the spirit of reconciliation with the Haudenosaunee people of Ontario. Demand that they stand by their agreement with the Haudenosaunee Wildlife and Habitat Authority and allow hunters to enter the park unrestricted.

C) Keystone Pipeline ➡ Letter Template

President-Elect Trump has expressed his desire to allow the construction of the KeystoneXL pipeline in an attempt to bring more jobs to the United States. We beat this once, when Obama was pressured to veto it. Now, the Conservatives want to pressure Trudeau to reopen the debate on KeystoneXL. Tell our politicians that we will not accept the KeystoneXL pipeline.

D) Election Reform ➡ Letter Template

Trudeau made a campaign promise to change the first-past-the-post system we use in our federal elections. He said he would do this within 18 months of holding office. Recently he and the Election Reform committee has stated it has dropped lower on their list of priorities. Send Trudeau a letter stating this is unacceptable and you are holding him to his promise.

E) Repeal Bill C51 Letter Template

The privacy and terrorism law passed by Harper grants the government broad powers to declare certain acts or material terrorism (such as environmental activism), prosecute those acts, confiscate material, and other powers similar to those of the US Patriot Act. Demand that our politicians repeal this law that infringes on our Charter rights.

F) Repeal Bill C36/PCEPA ➡ Letter Template

This anti-sex work law passed by Harper replaces several laws which were dangerous for sex workers in Canada with nearly-identical ones causing similar levels of harm. This legislation was created after the Supreme Court of Canada identified the previous laws as not charter-compliant. The laws in the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act (PCEPA) (2014 C-36) make illegal sex workers sharing space and working together, carriage of sex worker advertising, and paying for services from a sex worker. In addition, the act gives $20M to programs that encourage sex workers to leave the industry, and none to programs that support people in the industry. Send a letter to the Minister of Status of Women demanding Trudeau repeal this law that continues to infringe on our Charter rights.
