PAST PROTESTS

PREPARING TO PROTEST

***WHEN ATTENDING A PROTEST IT IS IMPERATIVE TO LISTEN TO BLACK ORGANIZERS. TO WHITE PROTESTERS: you need to be protecting others from police and acting as buffers, NOT escalating the situation, EVER. ALL NONBLACK PROTESTERS: you are there to listen, do NOT take over Black voices. ***

***Please remember that BLM DC is EXPLICITLY ABOLITIONIST. This means that our goal is to defund, divest, and abolish prisons and policing, NOT to accept performative measures like kneeling cops, renaming streets, and ~reducing cop killings. We want NO cop killings!***

*NECESSARY read for white accomplices (full thread): “COME CORRECT OR DON’T COME AT ALL!”

*DO NOT attend protests if you have any COVID symptoms (fever, cough, etc) OR have been exposed to the virus OR live with vulnerable people. To prevent the spread, WEAR A MASK, try maintain distance, carry hand sanitizer, don’t touch your face, ideally have goggles, and be mindful when yelling/chanting (spreads particles). Stay hydrated but when you take off your mask to eat/drink make sure you are distancing.

Free COVID-19 testing stations in DC at this site

*DO NOT TAKE/SHARE PHOTOS OF PROTESTERS, ESPECIALLY FACES. Do No Harm Photographing letter here

  • What to bring:
  • Mask (to protect yourself and others from the virus and to hide your identity)
  • Water and snack
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Sunscreen
  • Phone charger
  • heat resistant gloves, shatterproof goggles, N-95/respirator if possible
  • What to wear:
  • Nondescript ideally black clothing that covers identifying tattoos and is easy to move in. Don’t overheat.
  • Hat/sunglasses for sun protection/protecting your identity
  • Running shoes
  • Check the weather
  • Precautions to take:
  • iPhone: Turn off Significant Locations by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations > Turn Off. If you can, turn off cellular data.
  • Again, DO NOT take photos/videos of protesters, these can be used to ID and make arrests.
  • Whatsapp/Signal are more secure to communicate on than text/social media/especially Twitter DM.
  • Write down phone numbers on your arms - lawyers, emergency contacts, etc. Let someone know where you’re going and give them your legal name/DOB so they can find you if you are arrested
  • Police need a warrant to access your phone’s passcode but NOT Touch ID/Face ID on iPhones so disable if possible. You can also do this on some iPhones by pressing the power button 5 times and hitting CANCEL

  • Map of DC police cameras and most traffic cameras. Cover your face!

HEALTH & SAFETY

*DO NOT attend protests if you have any COVID symptoms (fever, cough, etc.) OR have been exposed to the virus OR live with vulnerable people. To prevent the spread, WEAR A MASK, try maintain distance, carry hand sanitizer, don’t touch your face, ideally have goggles, and be mindful when yelling/chanting (spreads particles). Stay hydrated, but when you take off your mask to eat/drink make sure you are distancing.

  • We refuse to encourage our community members to needlessly risk their lives and their health during this time when other avenues of action are available. We reserve the right to take to the streets in the future, but we encourage those who are most directly impacted by this fight, to put your safety and health before anything else. This is a marathon, not a sprint. The victory is hollow if we’re at the finish line alone.Statement from BLM Seattle/King County here

TIPS ON SELF-QUARANTINING HERE

SIMPLE FIRST AID CHART

Medics are usually present at every demonstration, or at least should be. Seek them out when you arrive. They have red crosses and red tape wrapped around their arms and legs. Yell “help” or “medic” for the most immediate care.

  • The Rosehip Medic Collective is a great resource if you’d like to learn more about becoming a street medic yourself. They host medic training and can even show you how to use local plants to treat wounds.
  • Street Medic Tip Sheet from CAT911, an alternative first responder network in LA.

IN THE EVENT OF PEPPER SPRAY (MACE) AND TEAR GAS:

(thank you Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County Chapter!)

There is a lot of conflicting information over what to pour on your face if you’re sprayed by a burning chemical.

  • STAY CALM: Protect your face and eyes, and get out of the area where the chemical weapon was deployed, but if possible, do not run, and stay as calm as you can. These weapons are designed to cause fear and chaos.
  • For your EYES:
  • Either water or saline solutions are universally recognized as safe
  • Milk, vinegar, and antacid solutions can cause potential damage to the eyes even if they help provide temporary relief from the burn – avoid them! You might continue to feel a burn for up to 30 minutes. You have to 1. Do an eye wash and 2. Wait it out.
  • DO NOT touch your eyes or anywhere on your face with your hands!
  • Remove contact lenses before irrigating with clean hands. It might be difficult to open your eyes, but someone with clean hands or gloves can hold them open for you.
  • EYE WASH: Irrigate your eyes with an eye flush using water (or saline if available), going from the inside of the eye outwards in a quick motion to remove the chemical. Ideally someone else can do this for you. A water bottle with a squirt top is the best way to do this.
  • Goggles or even glasses can help protect your eyes, but the skin on your face may still be vulnerable to chemicals. Don’t use goggles with foam barriers (use silicone instead), as these can trap the chemicals.
  • For your SKIN:
  • DO NOT TOUCH YOUR BURNING SKIN or your HAIR!
  • Touching burning skin can unintentionally spread it to other parts of your body.
  • After the eye wash, irrigate the skin with water (and soap if possible) to remove the chemicals.
  • Sensitive skin conditions can also make the effect of these chemicals worse. If you have sensitive skin, go the extra mile to cover up as much as possible.
  • For your THROAT AND LUNGS
  • Respiratory symptoms (coughing, feeling short of breath) are usually transient or temporary, and they are self-limiting or likely to resolve on their own without additional treatment.
  • The calmer and more prepared you can be, the less likely you will be to experience significant breathing issues. Staying calm yourself when helping people who have experienced pepper spray or tear gas will help them to be calm as well.
  • However, if you have underlying health conditions (for example, asthma), tear gas can cause bronchospasm. Bring your inhaler and use it as needed.
  • Going home: Try to avoid contact between your exposed clothes and car or any other seat, if you can, change out of those clothes and bag them, or sit on a plastic bag or other barrier to avoid contaminating your car or other transportation.
  • Always shower after being exposed to any of these chemicals. Use cool or cold water (hot water opens your pores and can make the burning worse).
  • Wash your hair separately and carefully before showering- you don’t want the stores of chemicals in your hair to run down your body and reactivate.
  • Remove clothes. Bag them so as to not infect other clothing in your laundry basket. Wash them as soon as possible, separately with strong detergent, possibly multiple times.
  • Overall, effects of pepper spray/mace/tear gas should be self-limited, but 8% of people exposed can have severe toxicity requiring medical aid. If any of the above symptoms are not improved with time and water/saline wash, then consider medical care.

WHAT TO EXPECT IF ARRESTED IN DC:

If someone is arrested in the District of Columbia, they may be scheduled to appear for an arraignment or presentment in DC Superior Court. This will most likely happen the following morning. (re: @superdupersalina)

DC does not have cash bail.

Protesters have been held at the Blue Plains Police Station and DC Convention Center.

Local and Federal Law Enforcement Officers are showing up at protests. Here is some information about who you might see at protests:

Local Law Enforcement Officers:

(DC has four local law enforcement agencies employing 4,262 sworn police officers, about 722 for each 100,000 residents. This is the highest proportion of police officers to citizens of any state or territory)

Federal Law Enforcement Officers

HERE is a map of federal land in DC (29% of DC’s land area.) Federal law enforcement officers may still arrest people possessing marijuana in these and other areas, such as public housing projects. Be careful!

THINGS YOU CAN DO FROM HOME

#BLM Petitions You Can Sign (from anywhere) for Maryland, DC, and Virginia

Consider being an emergency contact if people you know are attending protests.

Schedule check-ins with them - if something happens, have access to a lawyer’s number and ideally a car to pick them up. You can track police locations/try to prevent kettling as well by following @oracle_dc updates on Twitter. Get their birthdays and where they plan to protest and delete the texts as soon as you know they’ve safely left.

Home-based action items for DC Residents:

  • If you live in DC please take the time to write an email, leave a voicemail, or record a video testimony to the DC Judiciary Committee for a relocation of the proposed $580 million DC police-budget. This money could better support the community through non-police related resources.
  • Talking points can be found HERE
  • Learn more about defunding MPD at this website

  • Call DC Mayor Bowser’s police complaint line 202-727-3838 about the inhumane police kettling from June 1st demanding an end to the racist curfew that allowed for this to happen (can be switched around to use for other demands to release protesters and continue the call to end DC’s curfew) As of 6/4 there is no curfew but if Bowser reinstates it please call!! You can use the following script:
  • I am a DC resident calling for the immediate and safe release of all detained protesters currently held at Blue Plains Police Station and any other location across the District, due to yesterday’s police violence.
  • We are grateful that our community came together last night and this morning to ensure the safety of protesters kettled by police forces on Swann St NW. Unfortunately, not every community member was able to get inside the safe house before getting arrested.
  • The curfew imposed was inhumane and is used as a direct target for Black folks and other people of color in our community. The curfew was used to the benefit of the police (an abuse of their power) instead of DC’s residents, and we demand that it be lifted so another act of violence similar to last night doesn’t happen again.
  • Arresting more people will only continue the spread of Covid-19. Jail cells are a hot spot for Covid-19 exposure, and we must do everything in our power to keep our communities safe and limit the spread.
  • It is your duty as mayor to protect your community, and your recent choices have failed to reflect that intention. We demand the unconditional release of detained protesters and that no curfew against protesters is ever used again.and an immediate lift of the curfew to keep our DC community safe.
  • Tweet at @MayorBowser @DCPoliceDept @ChiefNewsham @CharlesAllen @SAFEDC
  • Call Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs (202) 442-8150
  • Call Police Chief Newsham (202) 727-4218
  • Call Helder Gil of Office of Deputy Mayor of Public Safety (202) 769-9468
  • Consider opening your home to protesters seeking water/bathrooms/refuge from police. Keep the #SaveJenny network going but be wary of what you post publicly. Again, try to communicate through WhatsApp/Signal!

Home-based action items for Maryland Residents:

  • CALLING SCRIPTS AND WHO TO CALL: here.

Home-based action items for Virginia Residents:

General action items (not DMV specific):

  • It is especially important to support our incarcerated community members through this pandemic, as social distancing is impossible inside jails and prisons. Write letters to trans/queer/HIV positive people in prisons with Power Blossoms and Black and Pink
  • Stream this monetized YouTube video in the background and put it on loop - money raised goes to BLM.
  • Thread on calling in friends
  • Massive list of petitions to sign. **Some are abolitionist and some are not**
  • Consider putting up posters in your neighborhood to spread awareness, information, education outlets, and donation sites around the BLM movement.
  • Find posters HERE. (Posters made by @em0jiqueen IG)
  • There have been many cases of people tearing posters down, consider also adding this POSTER underneath to suggest folks not take the original poster down. (Poster made by @sofia_fs IG)
