Edison International is awarding $50,000 college scholarships to 30 high school seniors to help them follow their dreams in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) and empower students to change the world. The Black Education Expo ensures that Southern California youth are exposed to scholarship opportunities and various educational resources. This is a one-stop hob for resources, workshops, and a celebration of Black & other historically marginalized communities. The Black Education Expo will be held at the Pasadena Convention Center on Saturday, October 12, from 9 AM to 2 PM. Unite-LA is offering the FREE Workforce Ready online learning program. Through the three-week self-paced curriculum (six hours total), Workforce Ready offers short courses to develop essential skill sets to help students be successful in securing an entry-level job/internship while providing career planning to guide students' professional growth. Youth Requirements: A resident of Los Angeles County, Individuals who are 14-26 years old, Have access to a phone, laptop or digital device to complete virtual programming. Click here to learn more!

Spring into Love is a youth-led health conference that aims to empower young people ages 14-24 to make healthier decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health. The conference consists of youth-led workshops, entertainment, raffle prizes, and other activities intended to promote health and well-being. By focusing on health topics related to HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unplanned pregnancy prevention, Spring into Love aim to address the reproductive and sexual health disparities that dramatically affect young people in South Los Angeles. In the AIM-N-Inspire program offered by Better Youth, participants will receive comprehensive training in animation, interactive gaming, media production (including film and TV shows), and new media with virtual and mixed realities. This includes hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment, professional development workshops, and mentorship from industry experts. The program is designed for foster and system-impacted youth ages 16-24 in LA County. Venice Arts College Day is taking place on Saturday, September 28th from 1-4pm. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a Personal Statement Workshop, Financial Aid Workshop, 1:1 Essay and Resume Review, Career & College Roundtable Discussion and Chat with College Representatives. Holman United Methodist Church is hosting the Annual Black College Summit on October 31st from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM featuring California Community Colleges to showcase over 39 HBCUs that offer community college students who complete certain academic requirements guaranteed transfer to a participating HBCU. Deadline Passed International Peace Day: Featuring Dr. Jane Goodall. A Free Event!!! Roots and Shoots is hosting a free and ticketless event on September 21, International Peace Day, at Point Fermin Park in San Pedro, from 10am-4pm. This event will feature local environmental groups and small businesses, Roots & Shoots groups, Rotary groups, live music, food trucks and pet adoptions. The day will culminate in a parade of 90 large dove puppets leading into a LIVE speech from Dr. Jane Goodall. Dr. Goodall is an English zoologist, primatologist, and anthropologist. She is considered the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees, after 60 years' studying the social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees.

Deadline Passed One Institute is proud to announce the return of their flagship educational program, Youth Ambassadors for Queer History, now with brand new scholarship and stipend support for passionate students. The Youth Ambassadors for Queer History is a five-month program that mentors high school students from across Los Angeles County to become ambassadors for LGBTQ+ history in their schools and communities. Through participation in LGBTQ+ history presentations, workshops, and hands-on archival research in the collections of ONE Archives at the USC Libraries, students gain life-long skills and experience in academic research, project management, community networking, and LGBTQ+ history advocacy. The Fall/Winter 2024-25 program will be hosted in-person at One Gallery in West Hollywood for two Saturdays per month from September 2024–January 2025. Applications are open now through 11:59pm PT on Sunday, September 8, 2024. To be considered, students must submit both the student application and teacher recommendation forms. Final acceptance will require a signed permission form from a parent or legal guardian.

Deadline Passed Girl’s Health Rocks is a health conference hosted by Kaiser Permanente on Saturday, September 21st from 8:30 AM-12:30 PM to empower girls through their teen years. Students 13-18 years old can join the FREE health conference to hear discussions about healthy skin, eating and exercise, teen dating and violence prevention, and depression & seeking help. A parent session will also be provided for those interested in learning the tools to partner in the health of their child. FREE breakfast and cool prizes will be included for the youth! WriteGirl is a Los Angeles-based creative writing and mentoring organization for teens around the world. The organization offers workshops, panel discussions and special events to help teens get creative and get to college! If you are an interested teen girl/gender expansive teen (ages 13-18), you can join the free monthly workshops and become a mentee at this link.

 

The Business of Student Success (BOSS) equips economically disadvantaged youth with the tools and skills to succeed in all aspects of their lives. Click here to apply.

LA:RISE helps youth who are currently unhoused or at-risk of becoming unhoused with an opportunity to become employed at one of their community partners: Coalition for Responsible Community Development (18+), Goodwill Industries of Southern California, Los Angeles LGBT Center, YWCA Greater Los Angeles, El Proyecto del Barrio Youthsource Center, and UCLA Youthsource Center. Bridges from School to Work supports youth with disabilities (IEP or 504) ages 17-24 and provides intensive levels of employment counseling before and after they get a job. Click here to apply.

Hire LA’s Youth is supporting youth who are low-income, parenting or pregnant. They will be offered supportive services such as childcare services, funding, college and employment preparation, and financial literacy classes. Arts, Media & Entertainment

The Creative Career Fair returns on Saturday, November 16! This is a FREE and fantastic opportunity for youth interested in the Arts as a career. Hear from independent artists and professionals in creative organizations talk about their career journeys. A panel conversation on "The Future of Entertainment" will be available throughout the day. Teen Vogue will host their 2024 Summit in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 23rd. This all-day event will feature some of today's boldest and brightest cultural icons and change-makers. Black Girls Film Camp - This is a free program for Teen Girls and Gender Expansive Youth. The Black Girls Film Camp will be held virtually in Spring 2025, from February 28 to June 21, 2025, on select Saturdays from 7 am to 10:30 am Pacific Time. The camp targets high school girls between the ages of 13 and 18 years old— applications close on Oct. 31, 2024, at 8:59 Pacific Time.

Interested participants must be:

  • In high school and between the ages of 13 and 18
  • Self-identify as a girl or gender expansive
  • Interested in storytelling and film

Requirements:

  • Attend virtual orientation on 2/12/2025 from 4pm - 6pm EST
  • Commit to 7 Saturday sessions between 3/8 - 6/14/2025
  • Attend a Writers Retreat in Kissimmee, FL from 2/28 - 3/2/2025 (All expenses covered except transportation)
  • Attend a Production Retreat in Los Angeles, CA (All expenses covered) 5/15 - 5/20/2025
  • Attend Premiere Weekend in Charlotte, NC from 6/20 - 6/22/2025  (All expenses covered except transportation)
  • Write and direct a  4 - 6 minute short film
  • Lead a production team with a film editor, production coach, cinematographer, and alumni coach.

The National Portfolio Association was established to help advise students on portfolio development for art and design college/university admission. This year, they are offering several virtual events and in-person event where students can receive valuable feedback and guidance on their portfolio before submitting their college applications.

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles Student Mentorship Program

The  NewFilmmakers Los Angeles' Student Mentorship Program accepts applications on an ongoing basis.

Below is a general overview of the program:

  • Each student is only allowed to participate once and they must be a current LA County-based High School student. Participants will be paired with a production mentor during their time on set and learn about directing, cinematography, lighting, producing, sound mixing, and more. Students will also be able to meet the filmmakers on set and receive IMDB credit for their participation.
  • Each student is only allowed to participate once in this program.
  • Lunch and snacks will be provided to the students

What you need to do:

  • Students must send their application via this link.
  • Parents/guardians must sign the release forms and send them to nfmlacinesessions@gmail.com and francesca@nfmla.org
  • Please make sure to regularly check your email and respond to the invitation as soon as possible to reserve a spot.

Deadline Passed Girls Make Games is pleased to give away a handful of free single-day passes to the IGN Live Festival coming up this weekend, June 7-9.  This is an event entirely focused on video games, movies, TV shows, and comics. The tickets are for youth and are first come, first serve, until they run out so make sure to sign up quickly using this link.

The City of Torrance is seeking volunteers for the James Armstrong Theatre (JAT). Volunteers will be responsible for ushering patrons to their reserved seats, selling beverages and snacks in the concession stand, and collecting tickets and greeting patrons at the theater entrance. As a volunteer, you will be asked to work at least once a month, usually during evenings and weekends. For more information, see this webpage. The Torrance Art Museum (TAM) invites volunteers for the following opportunities: (1) a docent is the first point of contact for museum visitors and the general public; they assist by tracking attendees, answering questions, and ensuring visitors adhere to museum policies (2) an assistant preparator supports the museum’s preparatory department in the de/installation of exhibits. The International Eye LA has opened applications for the Los Angeles Creative Industry Academy (LACIA). They are seeking 6 fellows for their 2023 Youth Producer & Director Fellowship Program. LACIA exposes emerging culture bearers, producers, and creatives from diverse and underserved communities to training, skills and connections necessary to enter high paying careers in the creative industries. The Harbor Freights Fellow Initiative supports youth who have a strong interest in working in the trades and have identified a mentor who is willing to host them as interns to develop hands-on practical skills. Examples of trades can include welding, blacksmithing, manufacturing, and mechanics. Fellows are required to complete 120 internship hours. To learn more, please visit this link.

Business & Finance

The Seed To Shelf™ is a PAID apprenticeship with hands-on learning exploration of urban agriculture at Moonwater Farm - Compton, CA for cohorts of youth and young adults ages 14-26. All participants – foster care, systems-involved, unhoused, LGBTQIA, BIPOC – will learn to cultivate, process, and distribute agricultural products, services, and foodstuffs sourced from the land.

Create a product or service in small groups. With a diverse team and many paths to produce agricultural products and services, Seed to Shelf™, offers an intimate, student-led year long exploration of our food system +  entrepreneurship.Earn up to $1,000 to participate in the following:

  • Training Workshops: Ranging from food safety to medicine making
  • Developing Products: Baskets, fig jam, syrups, and more
  • Services: Food growing, livestock breeding (goats, chickens, rabits, quail), ceremonial leadership and more.

Forgotten Children, Inc's mission is to rescue, restore, educate, and bring hope to victims of human trafficking. Their Youth Ambassador Program helps young leaders who want to empower their community by raising awareness about human trafficking, teen dating violence, mental health, as well as other stressors youth face. More than 1,000 strong, the Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) network of volunteers form the backbone of the organization. Diverse, motivated, and talented, BCHD volunteers have the opportunity to work in a variety of community-focused programs and play an integral role in improving the health and well-being of Beach Cities residents. The Food Finders are looking for volunteers to assist in rescuing food from the waste bin. Volunteers will learn about food waste and its impacts on the environment; additionally, they will gain an understanding of the benefits of repurposing good food into meals delivered to the food insecure communities surrounding us all. The Friendship Foundation connects volunteers with children with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Volunteers will act as Zoom Pals where they will have an opportunity to connect one-on-one with a buddy and have meaningful conversations about life. As a volunteer you will focus on building authentic friendships by encouraging pals to practice social skills, active listening, playing virtual board games, and more! The Children’s Clinic in Long Beach is seeking Reach Out and Read (ROR) Volunteers. ROR volunteers read to children in the waiting rooms of clinics, creating a literacy-rich environment and modeling important reading techniques to parents. Our Village is an organization which provides specialized social, emotional, and play support to families, and programming and training to schools and the community. They are seeking Teen Volunteers (age 13-18) to take part in group events.

Volunteer reading partners spend one hour a week helping students from kindergarten to 4th grade gain lifelong literacy skills that will empower their learning.

  • Flexible weekday volunteer times
  • Follow a highly effective, easy-to-use curriculum.
  • No prior experience is required. Volunteers must attend an orientation session.
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old (some opportunities may be available for high school students who are 14 years or older)

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation is offering The Be There Certificate. This is a free, self-paced learning experience designed to increase mental health literacy and provide you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to safely support anyone who may be struggling with their mental health. It provides a deep understanding of Be There’s 5 Golden Rules — a simple but actionable framework on how to recognize when someone might be struggling with their mental health, your role in supporting that person, and how to connect them to the help they deserve.

The Richstone Family Center is seeking volunteers to assist in tutoring and mentoring via the Kids club program. Volunteers may also assist in administrative tasks, event planning, and helping to collect and sort donations. To apply to volunteer at the Richstone Family Center, please visit their website.

Ride to Fly is seeking volunteers who will assist youth with special needs as they learn to ride a horse. Some of the duties include walking beside the horse to assist the rider during the lesson, leading the horse during the lesson, and planning, preparing, decorating, setup, and cleanup. The South Bay Literacy Council (SBLC) provides literacy classes to assist both native and non-native English speakers in learning to read, write, spell, and pronounce words. SBLC is seeking volunteers to help in both tutoring and non-tutoring positions. Visit their website to apply.

The Switzer Learning Center is a nonpublic school and behavioral health center that specializes in meeting the needs of neurodiverse children and teens with unique learning styles while supporting their emotional development with uniquely tailored programs. They are seeking volunteers to take part in some of the following opportunities: participate in fundraising activities, tutoring students, helping to file, enter data, and prepare emails. The Toberman Center offers social services to youth and families in Los Angeles. They are seeking volunteers to provide academic support during the after-school program, assist in food pantry sorting and packing, engage kids in enrichment activities, sort through donations, and support the Grab & Go Meal Program. The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is seeking volunteers to assist with fighting hunger in Los Angeles by sorting, packing, and distributing food. The Culver Palms Meals on Wheels is a small non-profit organization that delivers meals to home-bound residents from Pico Blvd to LAX. Some roles include drivers (must be 18 years of age and have a valid drivers license and car insurance), assistants, and office workers. More information on volunteering can be found here.

The Violence Intervention Program (VIP) aims to protect and treat all victims of family violence. VIP is seeking volunteers to act as mentors and tutors, and to be part of the Activity Center, operations, or assist in organizing a drive. Click here to apply.

The St. Francis Center (SFC) provides hunger relief to homeless and extremely low-income families and individuals in Los Angeles. The organization is seeking volunteers to support SFC’s daily operations, food and clothing donation organization, and administrative assistance. The Rooted Friends Project is a Black and LatinX-founded non-profit that aims to enrich the lives of underrepresented children through access to career services, sports and fitness, nutrition, the arts, childcare, mental health, cultural development, outreach, and inclusivity. Spring into Love is a youth-led health conference that aims to empower young people ages 14-24 to make healthier decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health. The conference consists of youth-led workshops, entertainment, raffle prizes, and other activities intended to promote health and well-being. By focusing on health topics related to HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unplanned pregnancy prevention, Spring into Love aim to address the reproductive and sexual health disparities that dramatically affect young people in South Los Angeles. They will develop their leadership and problem-solving skills, while interacting with each other and the world around them at sea and in nature through three sail sessions, followed by a three-day weekend voyage to Catalina. Public Services

Paid Opportunity through the The Los Angeles County Student Election Worker Program. This program provides high school students with an exciting opportunity to serve as Election Workers in Los Angeles County elections. The next election day is Tuesday, November 5th and you can work on Saturday and Sunday before Election Day. Participating students receive a stipend up to $480 for their service along with a great hands-on introduction to the democratic process Interested students must meet the following requirements to participate as a student election worker:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age by the time of the election
  • Must be attending a public or private secondary education institution (High School)
  • U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident (Green Card Holder) of the United States

The California Highway Patrol's Explorer Program is designed for young men and women, 15 to 20 years of age, allowing them to develop the skills and knowledge needed to serve the people of California through discipline and a commitment to serving their community. Explorers assist the CHP both in the office and out in the field. The experience they obtain here will be directly applicable to a future in law enforcement, while building relationships - with other Explorers, in the community they serve, and within the CHP. Explorers receive physical fitness training, medical training, and organizational, and clerical training. As an Explorer, you'll attend Community Service events, staff DUI Checkpoints, participate in a ride-along in the field, and compete in Explorer Competitions. The LAFD Cadet program is the top tier of a progressive pathway to becoming a Los Angeles City Firefighter. Cadets work side by side with LAFD members to learn the duties and responsibilities of a firefighter. Following an introductory one-day orientation, the youth get assigned to an approved LAFD Cadet Post, located at one of our Fire Stations in the City. Cadet Post activities are organized by firefighters that act as advisors and have completed all youth protection training through the Exploring Program/Boy Scouts of America. This exciting workshop, running daily from 10 AM to 2 PM for one week, offers a comprehensive introduction to the automotive industry. In collaboration with Aaron Valencia of Lost Angels Career Academy, Acceler8 has curated an engaging program for young enthusiasts aged 14-24. The Zimmerman Automobile Driving Museum (ADM) is seeking volunteers to assist with daily operations. The tasks may include leading tours, working in the restoration shop, organizing the library, and driving the cars on Sundays. You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer at ADM.
