Dear Lieutenant Governor, Honourable Salma Lakhani,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the "Back to School Act" that may be brought before you for Royal Assent. This Act reflects a troubling approach to education in Alberta and, if passed, could cause irreparable harm within our classrooms.

The lack of meaningful negotiations between the government and educators has created a significant gap in understanding the needs of our students and teachers. By not adequately funding education or engaging in good faith bargaining, the government risks undermining the quality of education our children deserve. It is crucial that we listen to the voices of Albertans, especially those on the front lines of education.

I urge you to consider the long-term impact of this legislation and to withhold Royal Assent to emphasize the need for better collaboration and support for our education system.

Thank you for your service and dedication to Alberta.

Sincerely,

A concerned Albertan

Her Honour the Honourable Salma Lakhani, A.O.E., B.Sc.
Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
Government House
12845 – 102 Avenue
Edmonton, Alberta T5N 0M6

Your Honour,

I am writing as a concerned citizen of Alberta to respectfully express my opposition to the Back to School Act and to raise serious concerns regarding its implications for democratic governance and constitutional integrity within our province.

The expedited passage of this legislation through the Legislative Assembly appears to have circumvented the deliberative and consultative processes fundamental to our parliamentary democracy. The principles of responsible government require that legislation be subject to meaningful debate, scrutiny, and public transparency. When these procedures are curtailed, the democratic legitimacy of the law itself is called into question.

Moreover, elements of the Back to School Act raise potential conflicts with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, particularly with respect to freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly. These Charter protections serve as the foundation of participatory democracy in Canada, ensuring that citizens retain the right to voice dissent and engage collectively in matters affecting their welfare and employment. Any legislative measure that diminishes these rights warrants the most careful constitutional consideration.

As the representative of His Majesty the King in the Province of Alberta, Your Honour’s constitutional role includes the safeguarding of democratic principles and the protection of the rule of law. I therefore respectfully urge Your Honour to exercise due diligence in reviewing the Back to School Act prior to granting Royal Assent. Given the concerns outlined above, I request that Royal Assent be withheld until such time as the constitutional and procedural propriety of the legislation can be fully examined.

Albertans trust that the Office of the Lieutenant Governor will uphold the conventions of constitutional democracy and ensure that governance in this province remains accountable, lawful, and consistent with the rights guaranteed to all Canadians.

Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter, and for your continued service in upholding the democratic and constitutional traditions of our province.

Respectfully submitted,
