Summary: The nobles cause drama with their endless marriage proposals, but it's a training accident that brings into focus just how dangerous being close with the king can be.
[Advisor] I must tell you, yet again, that if you go forward with this hasty, and quite honestly, foolish decision, you will be making enemies out of the nobles.
[King] Damn all the nobles! You think I care about those pompous jerks? If they're unhappy, good! Let them suffer for once in their life.
[Advisor] Your Majesty, you asked me to give you counsel. Please listen. Your choice of wife is a reflection upon our Kingdom and your rule. If you were to alienate the nobles this early on in your reign, you could risk a rebellion. Your cousin could easily be installed instead and we all know what kind of asshole he is. The fact is, you are one man, sire. They are many.
[King] [Using Advisor VA's real name] How long have we known each other?
[Advisor] Years, your majesty. Listen, I know you love her. It's plain to anyone that can see the way you look at her. Not to mention, she's my friend too. I want her happiness. But your highness, acting too hastily now will cost you both dearly. She wouldn't want to risk your reign.
[King] Do not presume to speak for her!
[Advisor] Then, call her here. I'm sure she'll be thrilled to give her opinion. I'll be happy to wait.
[King] Damn you.
[Advisor] Look, [using King VA's real name], you know me. I wouldn't be telling you this just because I didn't want you to marry a knight. Hell, I'm all about changing societal convention. But you're a new king. Your grip on the nobles is tenuous at best. You don't need to rush down the aisle. Just give me some time--
[King] How much time?
[Advisor] A year, maybe or--
[King] A year. Then two. Then, who knows? You expect me to ask her to wait that long? She's already been sneaking around for a few years now, like she was nothing more than a shameful fling. She is my everything. The whole reason I want to be a good king is because of her. I would give up everything for her.
[Advisor] But you can't. Your cousin would rule just like your father. He's nothing but a tyrant. You could make some real changes. Be the kind of king that would make her happy.
[King] So . . . what would you have me do?
[Advisor] Hold a ball. Invite the marriage candidates. Dance with a few of them. Flirt with another. Just to buy you some more time.
[King] You can't be serious!
[Advisor] Do you want me to find a solution or not?
[King] Fine. Arrange it.
[Advisor] Very good, sire.
[knock on the door]
[Advisor] Bring the message here. I'll read it.
[King] Well?
[Advisor] It's nothing that requires your attention.
[King] All the more reason I need to know.
[Advisor] Sire, I must implore you remain calm--
[King] What happened?
[Advisor] There's been an accident at the training yard and there were a few injuries--
[rushing footsteps]
[Advisor] Sire, wait!
[door slamming]

If you only have one VA, skip to this part:
Where is she? Stand aside, knight captain. I will not tell you again.
Gods above, fetch a healer! Now!
[footsteps walking]
[softly] Look at you, moonbeam, all bloody and bruised. What happened? An accident? Are you sure? You're one of the best knights around. Accidents don't happen to you. Of course I came. Why wouldn't I? Shhhh . . . I don't want you to worry about that now. Let me see your side. It's not bleeding too badly. Were you nicked by a blade?
Moonbeam, look at me. It's just me. You can tell me the truth. Who did this? No one? No one nicked you? No one hurt you?
Yes. I believe you. I believe you're protecting me. Yet again. Do you remember when we were kids and you got stuck up that tree? You were too scared to go down and too scared to call for help because you were afraid of getting in trouble. [laughs] Yeah. How long did you stay up there? Two hours? And then when I finally found you, I had to talk you down. You hadn't wanted to show you were weak. But as soon as you were in my arms, you were sobbing. I'm not telling you this to embarrass you, moonbeam. I'm telling you this because out of all the years I've known you, you've never once let me take care of you.
Except for that one moment.
Now, I'm the king. And listen to me, you will be my queen. Nothing--not heaven or hell--will stop me from loving you and making you my wife. I should be the one to keep you safe. In theory, that is. And yet, you keep staying up in your tree, even if it hurts you. And I . . . I'm still talking you down. Moonbeam, you don't have to tell me who did this to you. But if you think I'll just sit here and let you sacrifice yourself for me, then you don't know me. I'm stronger than you think. I can take some hits. I've got a plan. Well, my advisor has a plan, to buy us some time. There's gonna be a ball. I'll have to dance with some princesses, pretend like they stand a chance compared to you. I want you there. Not as a knight, but as their future queen. I'm sure the council will throw a fit, but hey, obviously, I need to make it clear that you're untouchable.
[kiss]
You'll come? [laughs] Good. Be careful. No more "accidents", okay? I don't think my heart can handle it. No, it's fine. We still have a few more moments before the healer returns.
Just let me hold you a little bit longer.
