Student Uniform/ Dress Code

Student Uniform / Dress Code

The goals of our uniform policy are to create a respectful learning environment, eliminate social distractions, and enable children to be independent. Students are expected to be dressed according to the following uniform code every day, and may not go to class or participate in school events without being in full uniform.

Libertas Shirt / Top:

  • Approved school-provided shirt with Libertas logo (Libertas polo shirt, Libertas t-shirt, etc.).
  • Early Childhood and Elementary students may wear any color Libertas shirt except DARK GREEN.
  • Middle School students may wear any color Libertas shirt including DARK GREEN.
  • Long or loose-fitting shirts must be tucked-in.
  • All new students receive one free uniform shirt; additional shirts are available for purchase.
  • If a child wears a dress or jumper, it must be uniform-style; Libertas logo shirt is still required.
  • If a jacket or sweater is needed for comfort, children may ONLY wear Libertas logo outerwear. Coats may not be worn inside the classroom.

Pants / Skirts / Bottoms:

  • Solid-colored slacks, khakis, shorts, or skirts. Shorts/skirts should be at least knee-length.
  • Leggings or tights are permitted in solid colors, provided that they be worn underneath skirts, dresses, or shorts (except that PreK and Kinder students do not need the layer over leggings).
  • Must be plain – no markings, logos, patterns, textures (including no “distressed” garments)
  • No sweatpants, athletic gear, jeggings, or jeans.
  • Pants must be worn at the waist; no sagging of pants will be permitted.

Footwear:

  • Children in PreK through 5th grade must have two pairs of shoes. One must be play shoes for gardening, P.E., and recess on our Adventure Playground. Play shoes will get dirty!
  • Shoes should be easy for children to put on and remove independently.
  • Shoes must be worn at all times, both indoors and outdoors.
  • For safety, no heels, “heelies,” flip flops, slides, or anything dangling.
  • Socks or tights must be plain and solid colored.

Other:

  • Jewelry: One pair of stud earrings only. No other jewelry may be visible (e.g. necklaces must be under one’s shirt, etc). Exception: Students may wear a bracelet that was made as part of classroom work. For safety, no rings or bracelets may be worn to school by students
  • Hats and hoods may not be worn inside the school building. If a headband is worn, it must be plain and unadorned (e.g. no cat ears, unicorn horns, etc.)
  • Change of clothes: PreK and Kindergarten children are required to have one emergency change of pants and underwear kept at school.
  • Backpacks and purses: Backpacks may not be worn in the classroom. Purses are for hygiene items only, and may be taken to the restroom, but otherwise must be left in or with backpacks and may not be worn in the classroom or around the school.
  • See below regarding cell phones.

We reserve the right to ask a child to change out of a non-functional or distracting clothing item at our discretion. Medical or religious exemptions to this policy must be approved by the Principal.

Students may not go to class or participate in school events without being in full uniform. However, we never wish for students to miss educational opportunities. Families will be called in the morning if students arrive without uniforms, and they will then need to bring needed items to the school within 30 minutes. If the family does not bring a uniform, a family meeting will be required the following morning. The school may have some extra uniforms that can be worn if needed. The school may send notices home if students have correctable uniform infractions. The school will also seek to help families with what they need to the extent possible, such as loaner uniforms, payment plans or subsidies for uniforms. Any special occasions for which different dress code may be allowed will be notified by the school in writing. School faculty also will attire themselves in accord with a dress code, which differs in detail but which is consistent in spirit, and is covered in the faculty handbook.

When a change of clothes has been required, teachers will put the soiled clothes in a plastic bag and will inform families (in writing, in person, or by phone) why clothes needed to be changed at school.  Uniform shirts may be loaned from the school in case of emergency and if available, and are requested back, cleaned, within 7 days. Families will be charged $5 for loaner uniform shirts that are not returned in good condition within 7 days.

Families are encouraged to have multiple uniform shirts for their children for ease of use and maintenance. Uniforms are available to purchase from the office at specified times. Additional information will be distributed annually about the uniform ordering process.

Confiscation of Cell Phones (LEA Policy 6313)

We strongly discourage students from bringing valuables to school because we cannot be responsible for monitoring them. Students may bring cell phones to school exclusively for the purpose of communicating before or after school; during the school day (from the time the student walks into the building until the time he or she leaves), the cell phone must be powered off and stored in his or her backpack. The school is not responsible for loss of, or damage to, personal devices brought to school by students. If a student device rings during the school day, or if a student takes their phone out of their backpack during the school day, it will be confiscated by a staff member for the duration of the school day, and must be picked up by the child’s parent or guardian at the end of the school day.
