US GARDENERS FOR PALESTINE
March 11, 2024
We, the undersigned gardeners, horticulturists and land workers based in the United States, are speaking out to demand an end to the violence across Palestine. We are adding our voices to those of many groups, from human rights and environmental organizations, to arts collectives, many cities and states, in calling for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further catastrophic loss of life. All life is sacred. We call for a lift to the siege, an immediate restoration of US funding for UNRWA, unimpeded transport of humanitarian aid, and the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
We are witnessing intolerable human suffering. Gazans have been subjected to 16 years of brutal blockades and prior episodes of massive bombing, resulting in thousands killed. They are now enduring a bombing campaign which has killed over 30,000 people (the majority women and children), maiming countless more, decimating vast swaths of Gaza, and driving nearly 90% of people from their homes. Virtually all hospitals, schools, and universities have been destroyed. Medical supplies are exhausted. And a UN report warned that the entire 2.3 million population is facing crisis levels of hunger with over a half million people suffering catastrophic or starvation levels.
Collective punishment is a war crime; and our own government is endorsing, funding, arming, and defending this illegal and immoral massacre. The indiscriminate and disproportionate bombing, deliberate killing of civilians, and ethnic cleansing of the region are violations of international law (see statements from the United Nations, Amnesty International, Doctors without Borders, WHO, UNESCO, Human Rights Watch, OXFAM, UNOCHA). According to the International Court of Justice, South Africa’s allegation that Israel is committing genocide is “plausible.” We ask you not to turn away.
The Israeli assault has severely damaged not only the Palestinian people, but also their land, their livelihoods, and the unique ecology of the region. Water resources have been contaminated, fisheries disabled and centuries-old olive groves bulldozed. Up to a quarter of Palestinian agricultural land has been destroyed. As growers – people who tend to plants and the soil, who feel a close kinship with our earth and all species of life – we are called to act in solidarity with our Palestinian counterparts, rooted in our shared love for the natural world and our role as stewards within it.
We call for a ceasefire, an end to the Occupation, and the long overdue recognition of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to inhabit and care for their land in safety and with dignity. Along with the vast majority of the world, we stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and their fight for freedom, justice, and their very survival. Please join us in advocating for a lasting and just peace.
