Tuesday Talks: Musical Reading w/Jessamyn Violet
Spoken Word backed by live music by Movie Club
Description: This is a reading like you’ve never seen before! Novelist and drummer Jessamyn Violet, a CCA MFA Creative Writing graduate, combines her love for music and literature by backing up writers with her instrumental band Movie Club live from CCA’s own Wilsey Cascade on October 28th. Ten readers from the faculty and student body will perform spoken word over live music. Check out the tunes and claim your song by signing up below!
Note from the performers: The band plays almost exactly like the recordings so it is easy to rehearse on your own. Please realize that once onstage, you'll be reading with a live two-piece band backing you up, so projection is essential. We have done a bunch of these musical readings by now, and spoken word/poetry/poetic prose definitely works best in this format. Think and channel Jim Morrison. If you are set on reading an excerpt from a story, we recommend focusing on a smaller portion and making sure to read it slow and loud for maximum impact. If you finish earlier than planned or lose your place, repetition always works well, pick a line and keep saying it. For some reason, people seem to really love that.
