CHAPTER 1

prologue

There are a lot of things in life that just don’t make sense.

Like how toast always falls butter or jam-side down, or how it always rains the second you’re heading out, or how the printer always jams when you need to print an urgent document.

But none of those can compare to the “nonsense” I’m experiencing right now.

“Congratulations.”

The atmosphere shifted abruptly with the doctor’s first words.

Unlike the doctor’s warm smile, the surroundings suddenly felt like a chilling wind had swept through, sending shivers down my spine.

“You’re six weeks pregnant.”

My mind went blank. It felt like I was sitting under a flickering lightbulb, with everything in front of me blinking on and off repeatedly.

I held my dizzy head and asked in a trembling voice.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure.”

The doctor, who had been cheerfully responding, gave a subtle smile only after seeing my pale face.

When the doctor asked if I was okay, I responded firmly instead of answering the question.

“I’m not an Omega.”

“But it is still possible for you to get pregnant like an Omega. The chances are slim, though.”

The doctor awkwardly turned the monitor around to show me. The first thing my eyes caught was my name, Baek Kanghyeon, but what held my gaze was the trait boldly listed beside it.

Α(Ω).

The so-called Alphega.

That rare and unsettling trait made me even more confused.

“As you know, Baek Kanghyeon-ssi, you have very strong Alpha traits. Even close to being dominant.”

I could feel the doctor’s bitter gaze.

“But that doesn’t mean the Omega traits are gone.”

He spoke as if to say that I shouldn’t underestimate the mere 1% of Omega traits I had.

“If your partner is a dominant Alpha, an Alphega can still get pregnant.”

His firm statement felt like it was pushing me further into an even darker abyss.

This is truly the worst.

As soon as I stepped out of the hospital, I pulled out my phone. Then, I silently called the person who had pushed me into this abyss.

‘No, is it really his fault?’

The real problem was me.

Whether Alpha or Omega, this damn body that can be anything is the problem.

So, I guess it’s only right that I end this relationship.

I called the man whose name had become the most familiar to me. The phone didn’t ring for long before he answered.

Through his cheerful voice, there was quite a lot of noise. It seemed like the commotion mirrored my own turmoil.

“I have something to tell you.”

Instead of a greeting, I started with my purpose.

“Let’s stop seeing each other.”

The moment I said this, the previously cheerful voice on the other end fell silent. The noisy background seemed to quiet down as if sensing the shift in mood.

“As fellow Alphas, we’ve been hooking up long enough, don’t you think?”

Just as his agitated voice seemed about to spill over, I cut off our relationship on my own terms.

“It was fun while it lasted.”

And with that, my relationship with Kwon Haeil came to an end.
