WSHS Competition Cheer

Tryout Information

Cheer Interest Form: Please fill out the interest form which can be found in the link in our Instagram bio (@springs_cheer). This helps us better plan for the upcoming season.

Athletic Clearance: All participants/student athletes are required to have a physical and ECG on file at WSHS. Please visit the athletics website (https://winterspringshs.scps.k12.fl.us/athletics/) and click the “Eligibility/Clearance Paperwork” box in the middle of the page for more information.

  • Athletic Clearance must be FULLY completed in order to participate at preseason conditioning and tryouts for the team. No exceptions.

Tryout Day: At the WSHS Cafeteria. Please arrive dressed in black or purple athletic clothing and cheer shoes. Hair pulled back. No Jewelry. You will also need running shoes.

Some of the basic skills we will be looking for during the tryout process include:

  • Sharp Motions/Timing
  • Voice Projection
  • Rhythm/Coordination
  • Enthusiasm/Confidence
  • Overall sportsmanship, athleticism, and school spirit

Required Skills:

  • Toe Touch
  • Right Hurdler
  • Left Hurdler
  • completion of a 1 mile run
  • Stunting experience

Tumbling is NOT a requirement to make the team.

Team Fees: Upon being selected for the competition cheer team, there is a team fee that is required to help cover season costs. This includes, but is not limited to uniforms, practice gear, buses, choreography, and music.

Fee per Cheerleader: $300.00

 Schedule: Practice is typically held twice a week after school. (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Additional dates may be added closer to competition dates if necessary. We will participate in various local competitions. To conclude the season, we will compete at Regionals with hopes of continuing on to States.

Choreography:: A choreography practice will be held on November 11th from 1:30-8:00pm with Pride Cheer. This is a mandatory date that all selected athletes MUST attend.

General Cheerleading Rules:  

  1. Attendance and participation is mandatory for all practices, fundraisers, and any event that requires the cheerleader’s presence. Only the coach can make changes to the schedule. A schedule will be available in advance for practices, games, and events. Additional practices may be added to the schedule, notice will be given well in advance of additional practices.

  1. Per the WSHS Athletic Department, all cheerleaders must be in adherence to the school’s attendance policy. For example, a cheerleader with 10 or more unexcused absences may be removed from the team.  

  1. Tryouts are for one competition season. This commitment is for the duration of the winter sports calendar (October - February) and the cheerleader MUST be able to attend ALL competitions. If you have a conflict with a competition date, please make sure all coaches are aware.

  1. If the cheerleader quits prior to the completion of the season they will not be allowed to return to the team, and will not be allowed to tryout for a full calendar year.  The cheerleader forfeits all monies paid and is responsible for any debts owed.

  1. Cheerleaders are required to replace all lost and/or damaged WSHS uniforms and/or property.

 

  1. Cheerleaders must be in full uniform for all events. Hair must be worn in a complete ponytail for all practices and competitions. No jewelry may be worn during practice or competitions for safety purposes.

  1. Any time a cheerleader is in their WSHS uniform, they are to be respectful and mature. Foul language, disrespectful behavior, inappropriate displays of affection will not be tolerated.

  1. A 2.0 grade point average must be maintained throughout the entire year in all academic level classes in order to remain in good standing on the team.

  1. All Seminole County Codes of Conduct, Seminole County Citizenship Policy, and WSHS Codes of Conduct must be followed at all times. Disciplinary action will be enforced if these rules are not met.

  1. Every Winter Springs Cheerleader will be held responsible for all statements and images posted on personal or team social media sites. Inappropriate statements/images may result in removal from the cheer program. In any case, to determine  whether a statement/image is considered “inappropriate”, a collaborative meeting with the Coach, Athletic Director,  and Principal will take place and proper disciplinary actions will follow.

Consent for Cheerleading Tryouts

My child, _________________________________________, has my permission to participate in tryouts at Winter Springs High School. I understand that he/she must abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the coaches and Seminole County Public Schools. I have read the rules and regulations and understand that the violation of any of these rules may lead to dismissal from tryouts. I understand that all forms must be completed and turned in prior to tryouts . I understand that all decisions made by the coaches are final. I understand FHSAA and Seminole County Public Schools require an up to date pre-participation Physical  Evaluation and a Consent and Release from Liability Certificate.
