Letter of Solidarity with the people of Palestine

We, the undersigned classicists, ancient historians, and scholars of antiquities affirm our commitment to the Palestinian people, both in the face of the most recent acts of genocide instigated by the government of Israel and by the Israeli Defence Force and in the face of their  decades-long suppression, occupation, and dehumanization. We affirm the right of return, as tendered by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, liberation, and self-determination for the people of Palestine who have been denied these basic rights since the unlawful creation of the Israeli state in 1948.

We express an unwavering belief in the freedom to speak, write, and protest for Palestinian liberation within our universities and departments, and we stand in solidarity with our Palestinian colleagues, peers, and students whose positions are made especially perilous by the interests of silence. We stand by our Muslim, Black, and brown colleagues who have faced and will continue to face disproportionate scrutiny, punishment, and racist/xenophobic attacks, on their person, scholarship, and careers, as they express support for the Palestinian cause. Further, we reject each and every effort to conflate anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism and support for Palestine with support for terrorism. We stand by our Jewish peers, colleagues, and students whose grief, culture, and religion have been mobilized for the machine of war against the Palestinians, especially as they continue to face increased anti-Semitism in the increasingly nationalistic and fascistic West.

We acknowledge that as scholars of antiquities whose work is vested in the geographies, histories, material cultures, languages, politics, and people  of the  Near East, we have a greater responsibility to speak on and for the existence of the Palestinian people in the Palestinian land. We further renounce the use of the methods of our fields, especially archeological practices, by Zionist movements which attempt to falsify a historical claim to the land by laundering its antiquity. We recognize how scholarship on antiquity is regularly used by projects of nationalism to forge false historical narratives which underpin the dispossession of others, and it is this practice which we wholly reject and refuse to be complicit to. We commit ourselves to the preservation of traditions of knowledge, epistemologies, and histories of the Palestinian people, and we hold that these must be taught honestly and rigorously in our universities. We believe that we must produce scholarship and commit to pedagogies which address the harm done to the Palestinian peoples.

We are profoundly disturbed by the impulse either to remain silent and “neutral” on the ongoing onslaught and genocide of the Palestinians or to condemn Hamas exclusively. We believe that the events of the past two weeks were not unprovoked, but rather caused by an increasingly violent and nationalistic Israeli government which has put its own civilians in danger as it seeks the total annihilation of the Palestinian people. We ask that our home departments, universities, and networks do not flatten these matters into “a war on Hamas” or “violence in the Middle East,” but rather speak the name of Palestine.

We call openly, loudly, and actively for a total ceasefire. We call for the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union to immediately end all military aid to Israel. We ask our home departments and institutions to commit themselves to the active work of anti-war organizing and teaching. Further, we call on our local elected officials and federal representatives to honor the United Nations’ resolutions on human rights and enforce international law on war crimes.

We stand by our peers, colleagues, and students in grief and absolute solidarity as we witness an era of violence, Islamophobia, and militarization that deeply impacts the well-being of each and every one of us.  We stand by each other in the face of this cruel and grotesque reality, committing firmly to free speech, solidarity, and common decency.
