Idaea was burned by ghost matter. Remains found on the Sun Station.

This one is almost certain given that Idaea is one of two known people to staff the Sun Station, Pye is accounted for elsewhere, and the skeleton is holding a stone that only Pye, Idaea, and Yarrow contributed to.

Clary was burned by ghost matter. Remains found on the Interloper shuttle.

Poke was burned by ghost matter. Remains found in the Interloper, trying to escape.

Pye was burned by ghost matter. Remains found in the Interloper core.

These three are 100% confirmed, since their locations are narrated up until the ghost matter explosion.

Root was burned by ghost matter. Remains found in the Black Hole Forge.

Very likely. This is the sole body in the Black Hole Forge; Root, Clary, and Poke were the three Nomai involved in forging the warp cores, and Clary and Poke are accounted for on the Interloper.

Conoy was burned by ghost matter. Remains found by the Brittle Hollow projection stone at the Construction Yard on Giant’s Deep.

Mallow and Avens were burned by ghost matter. Remains found overlooking the Construction Yard on Giant’s Deep.

Daz was burned by ghost matter. Remains found on a causeway at the Construction Yard on Giant’s Deep.

Cassava was burned by ghost matter. Remains found with a scroll at the Construction Yard on Giant’s Deep.

An unknown couple were burned by ghost matter. Remains found by the entrance to the Construction Yard on Giant’s Deep.

Of the above, the most certain is Conoy — he’s holding the Brittle Hollow projection stone which shows the Southern Observatory, his former workplace. Perhaps he was considering returning there after receiving the news that the Ash Twin Project was put on hiatus?

The rest of the Construction Yard crew is harder to pin down. We have six bodies and only four names that we know were present at the time of death. I have tentatively assigned the names above under the following logic:

Mallow and Avens are a couple, and a notedly mushy couple at that, so it follows that they’re close to one another and account for one of the pairs of skeletons. Their central position looking out at the Construction Yard is both consistent with visitors who have just arrived (workers at the Yard likely wouldn’t be admiring their everyday view) and is consistent with their narrative importance (the named characters are in the middle of the room, as opposed to the pair of skeletons sitting in the corner).

Cassava is the primary author of the scroll being held by the skeleton. In addition, he always doubted the feasibility and practicality of searching for the Eye. The scroll recounts the moment the Orbital Probe Cannon was completed, and Cassava’s relief and uncharacteristic optimism for the future of the project. Perhaps, in light of the failure of the Ash Twin Project, Cassava was reliving that moment with mixed emotions — unhappy that his misgivings had proven right after all?

Daz, who had worked at the Construction Yard for some time, would be a logical choice for the skeleton on the causeway. He appears to be heading from the construction zone to the lobby area, perhaps to console his husband, or to greet their guests.

That leaves the other skeletons as unknowns — unnamed workers on break? Travelers inspecting the yard? They’re near the exit and relatively out of the way, vaguely supporting these notions.

You could make a reasonable argument for virtually any permutation of Mallow, Avens, Cassava and Daz to the six bodies at the Yard (notably, since Avens and Daz are brothers, they may have been catching up and constitute one of the pairs of skeletons instead).

Phlox was burned by ghost matter. Remains found within the workshop on Statue Island.

Basically confirmed. It’s the only body found inside the island, and they seem to have died in the middle of chiseling this statue (which were Phlox’s creations).

Ramie was burned by ghost matter. Remains found in the High Energy Lab.

Mixed confidence. As the head of the High Energy Lab, a site of active research up until the end, Ramie is almost certainly here. Unfortunately, there are five skeletons present with very little to identify her specifically. I chose this skeleton for a couple reasons. One, it’s centrally located, denoting both plot significance and leadership. Two, it appears to be at the “administrative” level of the lab — amidst the shelves and surviving scrolls, featuring much communication by Ramie herself.

Bells and an unknown student were burned by ghost matter. Remains found in the Tower of Quantum Knowledge.

As the main guide for pilgrims coming to the Tower of Quantum Knowledge, and being responsible for most of the text written in the Tower, one of the three bodies found here is almost certainly Bells’s. I’ve chosen to place her as the skeleton on the right in this image, leaning over to help a studious pupil on the archival level of the Tower.

Coleus was burned by ghost matter. Remains found sitting at mining site 2b.

Cycad was burned by ghost matter. Remains found overlooking mining site 2b.

Oeno was burned by ghost matter. Remains found by the gravity tube at mining site 2b.

Another mixed case. There are five total skeletons at mining site 2b; two of these, however, are on the causeway leading from the operational area to the exit. It’s reasonable to assume that the three named characters that we know worked at the site — Coleus, Cycad, and Oeno — constitute the three bodies on the upper level. Discerning between them is less easy.

In this reconstruction, I’ve placed Coleus as the one sitting down to rest — he would be quite old at this point, being the only survivor of the original Vessel crash known to actively work on the Ash Twin Project up until the end! Cycad is then the skeleton in conversational distance with Coleus, his mentor. He seems to be overlooking the entire site, perhaps pondering the future of their operation now that the Ash Twin Project is complete (and a failure). That leaves the third upper level skeleton to be Oeno, evidently inspecting the last chunks of ore to be dug up.

In this scenario, we could imagine the two skeletons on the causeway as unnamed workers, or perhaps dispatches from Yarrow sent to work out what the Timber Hearth trio should do next.

Secca died of asphyxiation. Remains found within Dark Bramble.

Escall died of asphyxiation. Remains found within Dark Bramble.

Din died of asphyxiation. Remains found within Dark Bramble.

Secca is confirmed, as they died narrating the recording. The other two are a toss-up. There are nearly a dozen bodies here, with virtually nothing to distinguish Escall and Din. As captain, I’d expect Escall to be trying to find a way through the seed up until the very end — similarly so for Din, an apparent comms officer who was the one picking up the Vessel’s signal in the first place. Thus, I have them as two of the bodies staring into the seed’s entrances, rather than any of the bodies comforting each other or floating away in despair.

Foli, Keek, and Plume’s brother died of asphyxiation. Remains found somewhere in or on the Vessel.

These names were known to be lost after the Vessel crashed, and unfortunately there’s not much to deduce. The bodies here seem to have died en route to an unlaunched escape pod when the hallway blew open — or perhaps they were simply going about their business and died without warning. Our missing friends could be here, somewhere else in the largely inaccessible Vessel, or even among the dead bodies from Escape Pod 3.

The most intriguing body on the Vessel is the singular skeleton left on the bridge, who apparently died attempting to fix the broken warp core. Notably, the rest of the bridge crew escaped — Escall, Filix, and Annona for certain; the rest presumed by the lack of other bodies on the bridge — which means this individual actively chose to stay behind and not make for the escape pods. With nothing known about Foli, Keek, or Plume’s brother, however, it would be hard to justify placing them as this brave (or foolhardy) officer.

Ilex was burned by ghost matter. Remains found by the gravity cannon at Brittle Hollow.

This one is pure conjecture. This person could simply be the “staff” at the gravity cannon, waiting to receive and process travelers. Most Nomai technology seems to have been operated freely in good faith by anyone with need, however, and there’s no similar receptionist at the other cannon on Ember Twin. Alternatively, there are two scenarios that could lead us to call this person Ilex:

One, they are waiting for Solanum to return in the shuttle (or perhaps have just seen her off). Ilex was a childhood friend of Solanum, having played together on Ember Twin, and is known to have moved to Brittle Hollow later in life along with Solanum. It is not unreasonable that they stayed in touch.

Two, they are waiting for their turn with the shuttle to make their own quantum pilgrimage. Ilex would have been in the same cohort of Solanum and thus presumably of age to make the journey. He also had expressed doubts about the importance of finding the Eye, much like Solanum’s adolescent writings, suggesting he hasn’t yet experienced this moment of religious importance.

Notably, Ilex was the tallest of the known Anglerfish participants and explicitly not one of the “younger children.” This places him more in Solanum’s age group (young adult at time of death) than the others.

Filix was burned by ghost matter. Remains found in the classroom at the Hanging City.

Lami (and possibly Laevi and Taget) was burned by ghost matter. Remains found in the classroom at the Hanging City.

This one is a bit debatable. Lami’s presentation is in the classroom message board by default, implying they were giving the presentation (or had just finished) when the ghost matter hit. This would put them in the classroom, Filix the teacher at the head of the classroom (and who put a note on the presentation), and possibly their sibling Laevi and friend Taget somewhere else in the room.

That said, the game sometimes takes liberties with scrolls still being in message boards years or decades after they were written, and claiming that Lami’s presentation occurred just as the Interloper arrives carries some other consequences for the timeline. For one, Filix would be really old. She was a bridge officer on the Vessel; if she was indeed still alive, she would be the oldest Nomai we know of (even older than Coleus).

Additionally, since Lami and Laevi played with Solanum in Fossil Fish Cave, we would initially expect them to be around the same age — but this puts them still in school, while Solanum is an adult. However, since the writing at Fossil Fish Cave already makes an explicit distinction between the “young kids” (including Lami) and the older ones, and since in small populations like the Nomai it’s not uncommon for kids of all ages to play together, I don’t think this is much of a contradiction.

Yarrow was burned by ghost matter. Remains found by the Ash Twin warp tower on Ash Twin.

Highly likely. Yarrow was the Ash Twin Project’s project manager; having him as the visual indicator for the importance of this warp pad makes narrative sense. Moreover, his position leads to a very plausible reconstruction:

Yarrow leaves the Ash Twin Project to go to Ember Twin’s gravity cannon and see Clary, Poke, and Pye off on their expedition to the Interloper — both because of the expedition’s potential to power the ATP, and because Clary is his lover. He then makes the return warp back to Ash Twin (perhaps after stopping for tea in the Sunless City). While crossing from the Ember Twin warp pad to the Ash Twin warp pad, the ghost matter hits, leaving him as he is here.

Privet and an unknown friend were burned by ghost matter. Remains found in the Giant’s Deep warp tower on Ash Twin.

Conjecture. We know Privet left the Orbital Probe Cannon to see her brother, Idaea. We know Idaea, up until the end, was on the Sun Station. Thus Privet must have gone to Ash Twin to use the Sun Station warp pad — only she never made it all the way, since Idaea’s body is alone. If her body is anywhere, then, it is likely here.

The other body next to her would presumably be the one who “picked her up” by activating the warp pad on Ash Twin, allowing her to return warp from Giant’s Deep. This might be a friend, or perhaps this was a specific Nomaian job — call in ahead to arrange a warp to Ash Twin from whatever planet you’re currently on?

Solanum was burned by ghost matter. Remains found on the Quantum Moon around the Hourglass Twins, Timber Hearth, Brittle Hollow, Giant’s Deep, and Dark Bramble.

Solanum is alive (?) on the Quantum Moon around the Eye of the Universe.

(I got this visual bug while collecting screenshots, and I had to include it.)

Miscellaneous names:

Plume, Thatch, Annona, and Melorae all died in non-catastrophic circumstances, and thus there’s no reason to expect a body to survive anywhere.

Kousa, Bur, and Rhus were survivors of the original crash and thus also likely did not survive until the ghost matter explosion. However, Coleus shows that this is entirely possible, so technically any of the dozens of bodies littered around the Sunless City or Hanging City could be these geezers.

Mitis is only attested by a single line of dialogue in a scroll written in the Meltwater District some time before the ghost matter explosion. Any body in the Hanging City (or anywhere, really) could belong to them.

Spire is the frustrating one. We know they worked at the Southern Observatory. Moreover, they’re credited for having first spotted the Interloper, implying they were still working there up until the end. However, there are no bodies to be found in the Southern Observatory. I came up with a couple tentative identifications:

This person was looking into the projection pool in the Tower of Quantum Knowledge at the time of death. The Tower has a trailhead leading to the Southern Observatory, and the projection pool can be used to communicate with the Southern Observatory. Perhaps Spire had left to do business in the Hanging City, then stopped here to check on the Observatory remotely before returning?

This body is found in the Timber Hearth warp tower on Ash Twin. It is suited up, despite both the warp tower and the planet on the other side of the warp having ample oxygen. This implies they died in transit — perhaps Spire visited the Ash Twin Project to report their findings on the Interloper, then died on the way back to the Brittle Hollow warp tower. Alternatively, it could be one of my hypothesized “chauffeurs,” waiting for the call to pick someone up from a receiving end of the warp system.
