Description: Over the many years of Interpreter Training Programs there has been no formal education on how to team with a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI), even within our premier interpreting education programs around the United States. As a result, Certified Deaf Interpreters are underutilized and misunderstood. Many myths and misleading information has evolved through our profession about the practice of a CDI team. Because of this, interpreters often don’t make appropriate requests for a CDI team and the quality of the services for much-needed support adversely affects outcomes in high-stakes situations. Without proper education on communication options for interpreters, working interpreters could clear violate the RID Code of Professional Conduct, tenet 2.3, render the message faithfully by conveying the content and spirit of what is being communicated, using language most readily understood by consumers, and correcting errors discreetly and expeditiously. This interactive workshop will enhance the understanding of how to effectively work with a CDI and debunk the myths surrounding a CDI team.
CEUs: GVRRID is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for continuing education activities. This Professional Studies program is offered for 0.2 CEUs at the some Content Knowledge Level.

Cancellation / Attendance policy: This is a free workshop and interpreters are welcome to attend if available.
Interpreters are eligible to earn CEUs as long as they do not miss more than 15 minutes of the workshop. No partial CEUs will be awarded.

About the presenters:
Jimmy Beldon, CDI, M.ed, has been a professional involved in the interpreting field on many levels. Jimmy is the co-owner of Keystone Interpreting Solution, a consulting and interpreter referral business, and teaches at St. Catherine University in the Interpreter Education Program in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received his master’s degree in Deaf Education with an ASL Specialty from Western Maryland College and is a nationally renowned interpreter educator. He is a popular presenter requested to travel across the United States giving workshops on a variety of topics. Jimmy has gained prominence as a certified deaf interpreter throughout the court system. He also provides consulting on issues of Deaf culture, communication needs, and working with deaf immigrants and/or refugees.
Patty McCutcheon, CSC, SC:L, BSM, has also been a well-known name in the interpreting field as a model and mentor to interpreters in specialty areas. Patty has taught student and practicing interpreters about legal interpreting, performing arts interpreting, corporate board interpreting, and post-secondary interpreting. In addition to her 31 years of community interpreting experience, Patty is the co-owner of Keystone Interpreting Solution and has 25 years as a coordinator of interpreters in post-secondary settings. A native of Wisconsin, Patty has served the Wisconsin Registry of Interpreters (WisRID) for 10 years as Treasurer, President, and Past President. When moving to Minnesota she served two more years with the Minnesota Registry of Interpreters (MRID) as Treasurer.
