Mahomet-Seymour Community Unit School District 3

Dear Dr. Lindsey Hall, School Board Members, and Administrators,

We are Mahomet Seymour School District alumni spanning many graduating classes. We write to you today to call attention to the District’s lack of response to the current social injustices affecting our society, both presently and historically. As I am sure you are aware, our nation is experiencing a collective racial reckoning following the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement have been held in cities across the state of Illinois, all 50 states, and across the globe. Social Media has exploded across a multitude of platforms to support the Black Lives Matter movement, to hold law enforcement and government officials accountable, as well as to share resources to learn, engage in personal reflection, and listen to the experiences of others.

We alumni cannot help but notice that while universities, corporations, and other institutions have released statements related to the George Floyd murder and addressing racism, Mahomet Seymour Schools have been silent on these issues. Having reviewed the district website, each school’s website, and various district social media platforms including Superintendent Dr. Lindsey Hall’s Twitter account, it is evident that Mahomet Seymour has not acknowledged the recent tragedy and civil unrest of the nation. It is disappointing that a school district which expects its graduates to “become productive and creative citizens,” “communicate effectively through the written and spoken word,” and “...recognize the need for diversity” has so far chosen not to put those essential skills into practice itself regarding such an urgent matter.

Additionally, while we value the public education we received and lessons we learned, we cannot ignore the curriculum gaps and harmful pedagogical practices which also accompanied our education at Mahomet Seymour. Our K-12 education did not prepare us to recognize, acknowledge, or engage with the current and historical social injustices in our society, nor were we prepared to enter a diverse, global workforce. Additionally, various lesson plans, assignments, and the framing of historical events and timelines of our nation have further contributed, likely unintentionally but with a negative impact nonetheless, to the social injustices of our society. While it is true that Mahomet and the surrounding communities have historically been, and continue to be, predominately white, there is no excuse for the District to not engage students in meaningful, developmentally appropriate education about power, race, and privilege.

We must admit that we are genuinely concerned that the students currently enrolled in Mahomet Seymour Schools will continue to graduate without the knowledge, empathy, and critical thinking skills which are crucial for understanding their position in the world, communicating effectively with others, and navigating a global workforce and society. We would like to see Mahomet Seymour Schools choose to prepare their students for the world ahead of them through an education which prioritizes social justice and inclusion.

We would like to see school officials take not only symbolic steps but also tangible, concrete actions to address the concerns discussed above, starting with the following:

I) Respond appropriately to the killing of George Floyd and the greater Black Lives Matter movement

While this would largely be a symbolic gesture, silence sends a message. To paraphrase Angela Davis, it is not sufficient to not be racist; one must be anti-racist. The silence from MS-CUSD#3 is indicative of passive acceptance and signifies complicity with the current climate. In the year 2020, it should not be viewed as radical or political to agree with the sentiment that “Black Lives Matter.”

II) Create a comprehensive curricular plan for addressing issues such as inclusion, race, power, privilege, and more at the Elementary, Middle, and High School levels

Children develop awareness of race at an incredibly young age, and develop racial biases around 3-5 years old. Therefore, it is vital that conversations related to race and justice begin at a young age, in a developmentally appropriate manner, and continue throughout elementary and secondary schooling.

Updating and developing a high-quality social justice-oriented curriculum is a long process, but we would like to see the following practices included:

  • Reading and literacy materials should represent people from a wide variety of backgrounds and which hold a wide variety of identities (racial, religious, socio-economic, ability, and so on)
  • Reading and literacy materials should be sourced from authors which hold a wide variety of identities. While white men have contributed important works which deserve the attention of our students, it is also crucial that students are exposed to the work of non-white, non-male authors.
  • Social studies and history units and courses should be historically accurate narratives which do not center exclusively the experiences of white, affluent people and colonizers.

III) Provide professional development and continuing education for teachers which focuses on cultural competency, implicit bias, and developing culturally responsive lesson plans

New information related to social justice and inclusion practices is constantly being published, and there is never a stopping-point when learning about these topics. Even for recent college graduates, the coursework in teacher preparation programs does not always adequately prepare them to engage in difficult conversations about race and social inequalities. We would like to see teachers, staff, and administrators receive ongoing training on how to diversify their syllabi and decolonize their classrooms.

With so many resources available online, as well as opportunities for coursework and training from nearby University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Illinois State University, there is no reason not to make progress in this area.

IV) Share the developed curricular and professional development plans with the greater Mahomet Seymour community to allow for accountability by the community

We recognize that this is challenging work; mistakes will be made, and these changes are not all practices that can be implemented overnight. Knowing this, we believe that the District should respond publicly and release a plan of action to the community so that it can be held accountable. Any plan to address these issues can only be made stronger by inviting as diverse a group as possible to comment on it, now and into the future.

We recognize that full implementation of the above actions will require investments of time, energy, and resources at a time when so much is already happening in our world. We acknowledge that we are not the experts in the area of social justice and culturally competent teacher preparation. We consider the four requests we have outlined in this letter to be an initial response plan, but that with the support of colleagues in the field of education this will be an ongoing effort on behalf of Mahomet Seymour Schools. With COVID-19 already further exacerbating the inequality gap between students, we believe the time is now to take clear steps to incorporate social justice elements into Mahomet Seymour schools at all grade levels.

As graduates, we can speak firsthand to how valuable a Mahomet Seymour education is. However, without significant reflection and subsequent action by administrators, the school board, and teachers, Mahomet Seymour will continue to do its students a grave disservice.

Respectfully,

Alumni of Mahomet Seymour Schools (Click to sign here)

Addendum

The following statement was added after widespread circulation of the letter above. It should be noted by the letter recipients that the signatures listed at the end of this document are in regard to the original letter. Several alumni and community members have also called for and supported this addendum, but a signature of support process for the addendum was not offered. We do not aim to misrepresent the support of our signers.

Fellow Mahomet Seymour alums and community members felt additional components were necessary to supplement the letter above. These additional points were brought to the author’s attention; therefore, we would like to include an addendum in our call to action:

Addendum written by Mahomet Seymour alumni Ashley Tucker and Megan Tucker

The primary goal of donning an anti-racist perspective by actively endorsing the Black Lives Matter movement is to establish a safe environment for Black students and students of color as well as create a non-violent environment to welcome Black faculty and support existing faculty of color.

  • The goal of the pedagogical shift being requested is to generate an education at MS K-12 that can equip its graduates to not only be aware of systemic and institutionalized racism, but also have the critical tools to assist in its dismantling.
  • Currently, the faculty at Mahomet-Seymour HS does not accurately represent the student body which it serves.
  • The importance of a faculty mirroring their students is evidenced in the piece “The Promise of Black Teachers’ Success with Black Students” wherein it is stated, "In essence, there were culturally informed relationships that existed in the classrooms between Black teachers and Black students that enabled success for all involved”. (Milner IV, 2006).
  • According to Illinois Report Card’s 2018-2019 report the faculty is 0% Black, 0% Native American, 1.1% Hispanic, 1.1% Asian, and 97.2% white. By comparison, according to the same report of MS students grade 9 - 12, the HS student body is 1.1% Black, 0.1% Native American, 4.7% Hispanic, 2.2% Asian, 4.7% Mixed Race, and 87.2% white (Illinois State Board of Education, 2019)
  • To rectify this disparity, we propose both short- and long-term goals:
  • In the short-term, we call to include Black speakers and speakers of color onto the campus to lend their voice in the education process. These instructors should lend voice to a myriad of subjects (including, but not limited to, historical events, current events, sciences, and the performing arts) whether expertise is acquired through academic study, generational knowledge or by firsthand experience. By simply having Black role models and role models of color we enable our Black students and students of color to reconcile their identity at a crucial stage of identity development. Additionally, this contributes to creating a safe space for Black students and students of color and enhances the learning of the student body as a whole.
  • In the long-term, we seek a safe space within the district for Black families and families of color so that Black teachers and teachers of color can feel safe to continue or establish employment in the MS district.
  • Mahomet Township and the surrounding areas currently are, and historically have been, almost exclusively white due to the legally ordained segregation in the form of Sundown laws of recent decades past (Loewen, 2015).
  • Some members of MS faculty have a history of racist behavior toward Black individuals and people of color that needs to be explicitly addressed (Cheney, Loewen, & Huckelberry).

The goal of supporting the Black Lives Matter movement is to declare allyship with Black students, students of color, Black faculty, and faculty of color present in the Mahomet school district. To demonstrate that support, Mahomet school district must take immediate action to ensure Black students and students of color are supported in an evidence based manner both educationally and non-violently. Evidence demonstrates that the success of Black students and students of color significantly increases when they are taught by representative faculty. It is a tragedy that the education we receive can be considered some of the best education and make little to no mention of the pervasive power structure of racism in our society.
