One coffee with extra sugar

Word count: 490

Summary: You’re a barista working at the local coffee shop. Over the last few weeks, you’ve been eyeing the listener who often comes. Sometimes, you make small talk, other times you just hand her the coffee and go. But you muster up all the courage you have and plan to ask her out the next time she walks in. Speak of the devil - here she is now.

… Longer pause, usually to indicate that the listener is speaking for a considerable amount of time.

(Coffee shop sounds, jazz music, espresso machine, low talking)

(Fade in)

[Talking to your coworker] Closing isn’t so bad if you think about it. All you gotta do is clean, count the till and go.

… I’m not getting up that early.

[Chuckle] This is why I don’t open. I’m not psychotic.

(Door opens, bell rings and in comes our listener)

[Lower breath, towards coworker] Fuck me.

(Footsteps, as listener approaches the till)

Hey, how’ve you been?

Good. [Peppy, fake tone] I’m actually so excited to be at work right now.

[Normal, hushed tone] I require an escape plan.

Yeah, one that involves backup from a pretty girl, please.

[Flirty] Hmm, I mean I could name one right now...

[Laughing] Alright, what can I get you today?

(Screen tapping as she makes her order)

That’ll be $5.15. How are we paying today?

Debit? Sure, it’ll prompt you on the screen.

(Transaction sounds wooooooo)

Do you want your receipt?

(Receipt rip and into the trash)

No worries. Give me a few minutes.

(Off to the bar we go, add in some SFX here to your liking. I suggest an espresso machine, a blender, maybe shaking, milk pouring, whipped cream - be creative!)

[While you’re making her drink] What’s the plan for today?

… Wow, you’re pretty busy.

… [Blender/shaker over your voice] Oh, you know, just making a drink for a pretty girl.

(Listener: Sorry?)

J-Just making drinks for people.

(Take some time and finish making the drink)

(A pause)

Alright, here’s your drink.

I know you wanted a medium but I thought you could use the extra caffeine.

[Smiling] I mean, it’s no problem. Anything to make your day a little less stressful.

(She turns to leave after saying thank you)

Hey, um.. Before you go, I just wanted to say I’ve been enjoying our little conversations the past couple of weeks. And... I think you’re beautiful. I’d really love to take you out sometime for dinner, if that’s alright with you.

[Surprised] O-Oh! Really?

Yeah, I can give you my number if you’re comfortable with that. I know most people use social media but I’m a little old fashioned.

[Laughing] Okay, not that old fashioned. Instagram works too.

(Phone sounds as you input your Instagram handle into her search bar)

[Chuckle] Yeah, my name’s [insert a name you’d like to use here]. And yours?

Wow, that is a pretty name. It’s nice to meet you.

We can work out the details when you’re not so busy. I don’t you want to be late.

[Laughing] Alright, well, have a great day. Be safe.

(Footsteps and the door opening as she walks out)

[To coworker, with a big sigh of relief] Wow, I didn’t fuck that up.

[Laughing] I didn’t think she’d say yes, to be honest.

I mean I’m not that good looking.

Nah, I only had a 1% chance.

(More rambling if you’d like)

(Laughing, fade out)

Afterword

Hello, I’m Mika - thank you for reading my little cutemeet. I’ve written this script loosely based on an experience I’ve had with a barista a few years ago. I’ve put a lot of thought into how someone ought to ask a stranger out. I personally love the old-timey traditional way of asking for someone’s phone number but understand that society nowadays is not how it used to be. So allowing the listener to set a boundary by suggesting social media platforms and the speaker respecting that.

Anyway, thank you for reading my script. And thank you so much for the fills ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡
