Sowing Recommendations Jump to: Newest Additions! * Species * NoIDs * Hybrids

  • BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN OPENING YOUR SEED PACKAGE!
  • Begonia seeds are VERY tiny (<.75mm) and can scatter with a jump of the paper or a sneeze.
  • Seeds are in a folded piece of glassine paper within the case. Seeds could have shifted out of the paper into the case. If the label is folded over the edge, take great care not to pinch the bottom (where the label is creased) where the seeds are sitting.
  • I recommend opening your package above a clean sheet of printer paper, creased down the middle, as this will help catch any that spill and can then be used to count or distribute your seed more easily for sowing. Good seeds roll (squished seeds don’t).
  • If you are not planning to sow right away, store in the refrigerator (not the freezer).

LIGHT: Constant, close light works best, under an LED or other artificial light in my experience.  Begonia seeds require light to germinate, so this is also important to remember when you set up your box, that you’ll want to premoisten your substrate and then lay your seeds on the surface, to be sure they don’t sink into the substrate. I recommend 12-14 hours/day.

SUBSTRATE: Many substrates work, but my favorite is ProMix, which is a peat-based mix to which I add some extra perlite (3:1) and then a layer of vermiculite on top. You can use other media, but be aware that if it’s a coarse mix you might risk seeds falling into pockets and if they don’t see light they won’t germinate. See the note re: pre-moistening before laying down the seeds!

WATER: To trigger germination, seeds must take in water.  Don’t let your seeds dry out while germinating and through early growth!  The smaller the container, the more easily you can maintain high moisture and have that moisture recirculate back into your substrate, meaning less maintenance for you.  I like to use smaller containers—anything from a deli cup to a clear plastic shoebox, to keep optimum moisture in the system.

HUMIDITY: You’ll want to maintain near 100% humidity for germination, and unless I’m checking on them, I keep seedlings completely sealed until I’m ready to transplant them.

HEAT: Warmth seems to be a critical factor in my experience in triggering germination, ideally above 73F.  One can use a seedling mat for these purposes but be aware you’ll need to be more attuned to moisture and you might need to rehydrate more often—they can easily dry out so I recommend this route with caution. In winter, having artificial lights that emit some warmth and setting my seedling trays on a top shelf in my kitchen is adequate without additional heating.

Other considerations:

  • Sterilize your containers, trays and pots to ensure pathogens are not present that could cause damping off. These pathogens thrive in cool wet conditions, so also be sure your media is not sopping wet.
  • Strike a balance in how many seeds you lay down at once.  I find that they germinate best in good company, but if too densely crowded, that can slow growth all around and be hard to untangle later.
  • It typically takes anywhere from 1-6 weeks to germinate, with most that I’ve observed emerging visibly around the 3-4 week mark.
  • I usually wait until I have 1-3 more mature leaves before separating and transplanting.  When I do transplant, I will make a pot of the substrate I'd like it to grow into longterm, and then make a hole that I'll fill halfway with the same mix it's been growing in, and then pot up nestled within that.
