The 9:30 Glitch | Written by Elan Miller
The 9:30 Glitch
Raghav (22): A hardworking, severely stressed job seeker.
Mom (Mother): Protective, loving, but subtly pressuring.
Dad (Father): Strict but traditional; anxious about the future.
Ravi (Big Brother): The older sibling.
Lily (Little Sister): Sarcastic and teasing, but deeply cares for Raghav.
SETTING: A lovely Indian house. A large, old-fashioned clock stands prominently in the middle of the room. A television set rests just beside the clock. A single sofa, a table, and three chairs fill the space.
AT RISE: It is a lovely Sunday morning at exactly 9:30 AM. Almost everyonehjk has woken up and started their daily routines
Narrator: | Raghav is rigidly sitting on a chair watching his mobile phone. His father is casually sitting on the sofa unfolding the daily newspaper. |
Dad: | What a lovely month it is been in west Bengal. |
Raghav: | I don’t know dad, they did said it would arrive at 9:30 today. |
Dad: | (checks his watch, jokingly, slight tauntingly) It is 9:30 now, it hasn’t been released yet! How many days are you going to live off my money! If you cannot get a job, how are you going to get married when you become older! |
Narrator: | His mom comes rushing with a *utensil* in her hand, pointing towards Dad. |
Mom: | Don’t you dare say that to my child, he can stay and eat with our money for as long as he wants. |
Mom: | You don’t have to listen to your father; you can stay for as long as you want. |
Raghav: | (Jokingly) `Ya ya you don’t have to tense about my marrage and life. But I guess it has to arrive now. |
Lily: | If Raghav does not get a job then we can finally kick him out of this house and I will rent him a place in the veranda. That would be so exciting. |
Raghav: | (A bit angry and annoyed) we will see about that but I am not giving a penny to buy you any stuff if I get that job! |
Narrator: | A mail arrives in Raghav’s mobile. |
Raghav: | Here it comes. However, because we see promise in your application, you have been placed on our official waitlist. |
Lily: | Wow, Raghav is in the intermediate step! This looks so exciting, he is just in the verge of kicking out of the house and holding his dignity! |
Dad: | You do not have to stress over it too much you are in their waitlist, that means you have the quality and efforts they wanted, it happens a lot of time while giving a job interview. You can just relax for now. |
Raghav: | (stressing too much) This not good, I gave my all, how can they not accept me. Nobody there was as good as me. It is totally unfair to me. They are just…. |
Mom: | (Worrying about Raghav) its ok son, it is no big deal, you have even better job opportunities lining up, and it is not the end of the world. |
Raghav: | No!!! it-it is not ok at all. I gave my happiness, soul and everything to this job how can they deny me, it is not fair… it is total injustice……. |
All the lights violently crash down into darkness.
LIGHTING CUE: A single, sharp spotlight snaps on, illuminating only RAGHAV. He is in the exact same room, but the atmosphere feels completely off and surreal.
Narrator: | Raghav is standing in the middle, crying that he did not have that job! |
Raghav: | (Very emotionally crying) what will happen to me now. Everything I dreamt of is now out of my hand. How will I even show my face to my parents? Everyone will hate me now, wha…. |
Narrator: | Dad enters the room. |
Dad: | (interrupting) What a lovely month it is been in west Bengal. |
Raghav: | (Confused and shocked)wait, what is going on! What happened to you all of you? |
Dad: | (Completely ignoring Raghav) It is 9:30 now, it hasn’t been released yet! How many days are you going to live off my money! If you cannot get a job, how are you going to get married when you become older! |
Narrator: | Raghav is afraid now, slowly looks at the old large clock, the time shows 9:30 in the morning. His mom (Mom) comes rushing with a *utensil* in her hand, pointing towards Dad. |
Mom: | Don’t you dare say that to my child, he can stay and eat with our money for as long as he wants. |
Mom: | You don’t have to listen to your father, you can stay for as long as you want. |
Raghav: | Wait am I still alive, why are you guys saying the same thing as before, you literally said the same thing few minutes ago! |
Lily: | (Ignoring Raghav again) If Raghav does not gets a job then we can finally kick him out of this house and I will rent him a place in the veranda. That would be so exciting. |
Narrator: | Raghav notices that everything is not the same as before. Raghav starts to look closely. |
Raghav: | Wait, am I not supposed to get a mail now! (looks up in his phone) why haven’t I received any mail by now? |
Narrator: | Dad wlaks up to him and taps him on his solder. |
Dad: | Hay Raghav, why are you zoning out? Pick up Ravi’s call! He calledyou twice by now. |
Raghav: | (very shocked looks in his phone and picks up the call) |
Narrator: | Raghav looks totally freezed! This makes Dad worried |
Dad: | Isn’t it your brothers call? Talk to him. |
Raghav: | Oh yup! It is his call! |
Narrator: | Mom rushes to open the tv and brings the channel. |
T.V: | Big news : Due to extreme high rainfall in the last few days, there is a flood in Kolkata. Recent news show many of the main software hubs have gone down under water by almost 5 meters. This has caused massive terror and safety risks in that area. Many people have lost their homes and family members. Many companies have report that their system have been corrupted by the flood and before totally switching off they sent thousands of automated misleading mails to many of their clients. |
Dad: | Om my god what happened in Kolkata, this is a total disaster. So many innocent lives were taken away! |
Narrator: | At this point Raghav is totally helpless and almost paralysed in shock, he is not even able to move from the chair. Mom is standing in her position and became so shocked that she covered her mouth with both hands. |
Mom: | You are home early today. Did you looked up on the channel? This such a nightmare. So many people are lost in an instant. |
Ravi: | Yes today was a special case for sure, but look I found a letter in our mailbox and it is one from the company you applied for. (hands the letter over to Raghav) it looks like your acc… |
Raghav: | It’s my acceptance letter! |
Everything instantly goes blank and dark again
SETTING: The living room. The natural, bright afternoon sunlight streams through the window.
AT NOON: RAGHAV is lying flat on the sofa. LILY is sitting anxiously beside him, frantically rubbing his face with a cold, wet cloth, tears streaming down her face.
Lily: | (crying) I am so sorry, I am always taunting you. P-please wake up, it is not fare. I-I c-c-an not forgive myself if you never wake up!(keeps sobbing and mumbling) |
Narrator: | Raghav instantly wakes up at 2 pm and sits like he is sitting on a chair and looks like he is holding letter and reading it! |
Raghav: | Hurray!! It is here, I finally here, hehe, I am finally in the job!! I told you all that nobody is better than me! |
Narrator: | Lily is in disbelieve that he woke up but is also glad and she rushes and hugs him. |
Lily: | (Sobbing, wiping her own tears with her sleeve) You idiot... you absolute idiot. You were sitting there like a statue for hours. I thought... I thought you had a stroke or something. Don't ever do that to me again. I don't care about the letter, I just want you back. |
Raghav: | (in disbelieve) W-what is happening! Where is my letter, and why are you hugging me! But my acceptance letter was in my hand, where did it went! |
Lily: | Stop talking bullshit you dumbass, where were you lost. I was so stressed! You never received a letter! You are not even accepted! |
Raghav: | No just believe me I got the acceptance letter! Kolka… |
Narrator: | His sight went on the tv. |
T.V. | Meteorological officials have confirmed a historic shift in regional weather patterns as West Bengal records zero millimetres of rainfall for the consecutive fourth week. What was expected to be a month of late-monsoon downpours has instead transformed into an unprecedented, month-long stretch of remarkably clear skies and unusually pleasant autumn conditions across the entire state. |
Narrator: | His parents came to the room from one side and his brother from the other side! |
Ravi: | (totally worried, rushing) Hey look I found Raghav’s acceptance letter just now in the mailbox. |
Everyone in the room freezes completely, turning their heads slowly to look directly at RAGHAV. RAGHAV slowly turns his face away from them, staring straight into the audience with wide, terrified, questioning eyes.
The heavy theatre curtains violently fall.
