Poland Doll

Gauge 7 sc stitches per inch (tight enough so stuffing doesn't show through)

I used Bernat cozy (red) and Red Heart Super Saver (white)  but any 4 medium weight acrylic or wool should be fine.

Size C (3.5) hook, or whatever you need to get gauge.

Finished Doll is about 11 inches tall.

Eyes (make 2)

Starting with white yarn

6 sc in magic ring

2 sc in each stitch

Change to dark/black yarn

2 sc in every other stitch, bind off leave long tail for sewing.

Head

Starting with white yarn

6 sc in magic ring

Increase in each stitch, (12 )

*sc one stitch, increase in next stitch* repeat to the end of round (18)

*sc in next 2 stitches, increase1* repeat till end of row (24)

*sc in next 3 stitches, increase1* repeat till end of row (30)

*sc 4 stitch, increase in next stitch* repeat to the end of round (36)

sc 5 stitch, increase in next stitch* repeat to the end of round (42)

4 rounds sc, switch to red

 Add eyes/ embroider face if desired.Stuff

Bind off, weave in the end. If you stop now you have a Poland ball.

Construction

I like to start by sewing the body to the head, making sure the lumps of the bra are pointed the same way as the face.

 followed by arms and legs in the appropriate places. I also like to use a whipstitch and go over each limb twice, but as long as the limbs are solidly attached where you like them it's all good.

Sweater crochet version

Back

 Switch to a size G hook. I used dark brown.

Chain 16, turn.

Row 1. In second chain from hook *sc one chain one then chain one* repeat from * seven times. Chain 1, turn.

Row 2.Make a single crochet around the third chain from the hook.  Repeat * until you reach the end of the row, chain 2 turn.

Repeat row 2 until you've covered the back of your doll. Do not bind off.

Side 1

 Row 1. Chain 2, single crochet around third chain from hook, *chain 1, sc around the next chain.* repeat * 2 more times. Chain 2, turn.

Repeat row 1 three times, ending so you're working towards the long end of the back.

Front

Row 1. Chain 9.In second chain from hook *sc one chain one then chain one* repeat from * seven times. Chain 1, turn. The fabric should be forming a "U" shape.

Rows 2-4. *Make a single crochet around the third chain from the hook, chain 1* Repeat * until you reach the end of the row, chain 2, turn.

Sweater knit version

Size 8 needles, 4 weight yarn.

5 stitches per inch

Back

Cast on 20 stitches.

1-8. Work a 1×1 rib for an inch. (Aprox 8 rows)

9-24.Work in stockinet until it's 3 inches long (16 rows of stockinet, about 24 rows total)

25.Bind off 2, knit to end of row.

26.Bind off 2, purl to end of row.

27-31.Work in stockinet for four more rows.

32.Knit 4, bind off 8 knit 4.

34. Purl 4, put other 4 on a stitch saver.

Work 4 more rows in stockinet. Pull yarn through remaining stitches, repeat with the 4 on stitch holder.

Front

Cast on 20

1-8. Work a 1×1 rib

9-24. Work in stockinet till its 3 inches long

25.Bind off 2, knit to end of row.

26.Bind off 2, purl to end of row.

*27. Knit 7, bind off 2 knit 7

28. Purl 7, place rest of stitches on stitch holder.

29. Bind off 1, knit 6

30. Purl

31. bind off 1, knit 5

32. Purl

33. Bind off 1, knit 4, pull yarn through the remaining stitches.

Pick up stitches on the holder

28. join yarn. Purl 7, weaving in ends as you go

29. Bind off 1, knit 6

30. Purl

31. bind off 1, knit 5

32. Purl

33. Bind off 1, knit 4, pull yarn through the remaining stitches.

Sew the front and back together at the "shoulder".

Sleeves make 2

 Cast on 15

1-8. Work in a 1×1 rib

9-18. Work stockinet till the whole sleeve is 2 inches.

19.Knit 2 together, knit to end

20. Purl 2 tog purl to end.

Rep rows 19 and 20 until 9 stitches remain, pull yarn through remaining stitches

Sew sleeves to the body so the ribbed part is free.

Sew the sweater up the sides and down the inside of the sleeves.

Collar

Cast on 3q5. Be sure your cast on is loose so it can stretch or you might not be able to put it in your doll

1-8. Work a 1×1 rib stitch

Bind off with a stretchy bind off.

Attach to the neck hole of the sweater.

To dress your doll pull the sweater over the legs
