A NOTE FROM MUTUAL AID CANADA CREATOR

I am a 35-year-old mixed race Jamaican-Danish woman living in Calgary, Alberta. I am a single Mother with one teenage daughter. I am self-employed and dedicate my life to community organizing. I consider myself an Abolitionist, while exploring Black Anarchism, the Black Radical Tradition and Abolitionist Feminism. Through my advocacy and direct action, I have been heavily criminalized. Since 2020 I have received 17 criminal charges, served with 3 lawsuits from members of the Calgary Police Service, and have spent time in jail and on house arrest. This has brought on nearly $60,000 in legal fees that I have had to pay and continue to pay. Due to this criminalization, press purposely depicting me as “dangerous,” as well as most people being unwilling to commit to anti-racism, I have lost many of the clients, bookings, and opportunities I once had prior to 2020. This, along with my mental health significantly declining while trying to navigate these last 6 years, has made my ability to find and maintain full-time employment no longer a possibility for me. As such, organizing has become my focus, but this work is unpaid labor. To make money, I share my experience with organizing through workshops, guest speaking, one-on-one learning sessions and writing through my Patreon. I also make art and participate in SW. Mutual Aid Canada can be a full-time job on its own, and it’s just one “small” thing I do to support those most marginalized and vulnerable in our society. In order to commit to this work while taking care of myself and my family, I rely on community care to survive. Please consider supporting me on an ongoing basis. Thank you. - Taylor ❤️
