Purpose

In response to the racial injustices occurring on a regular basis in our country, Get It Called would like to encourage the synchronized skating community to do some personal reflection on our contributions to these problems.

We need to recognize that the skating community is predominantly white, and that many of the race issues in our country at large can be found right here in our own smaller community. It's well past time that we face that reality and start making big, structural changes within our own teams and organizations.

This list of resources was compiled by synchronized skaters to:

  1. help teams and skaters recognize and prevent microaggressions within the community
  2. support Black owned businesses and organizations specifically relevant to the synchro community
  3. educate and inform teams and skaters about racial issues within the community and at large
  4. provide actions that can be taken in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other Black lives that have been taken due to white supremacy, systemic and institutional racism, and police brutality
  5. encourage an open conversation in our community about the flaws and injustices occurring, and how we can be better at promoting diversity and inclusion all around

Dress Designers

  • Advocate for your skaters and their skin colors to your dressmaker.
  • Ask your dressmaker if they hand dye mesh.
  • Ask your dressmaker if you supply the mesh, would they use it to make the dress. Small stores (like on Etsy) sell a wide range of mesh colors that you could order.
  • If using stock mesh, request that your dress designer send you swatches of all available mesh colors. Use these to color match to skaters when taking their measurements.
  • If you need to get creative, you can work with Lycra too (for example, put dark mesh over light Lycra to match closer to a skater's skin tone).
