This is a step by step tutorial on how to add the outside pockets to Jeni’s drawstring bag tutorial. Please refer to her pattern at the link above until you get to the first step mentioned in this document.
After you have all your pieces sewn together in one large strip. Set this piece aside for now.
Cut 1 piece of your main print measuring 10.5 x 13”
and another piece from your lining fabric measuring 10.5 x 14”
Take your two pieces and line up the sides measuring 10.5” wrong sides together and sew a 1/4th inch seam across the top.
Your lining piece will be larger then your main piece.
Realign the bottom to match up and sew a ¼” seam across the bottom as well.
This will make a sort of pocket circle like this
Turn the piece inside right to view the prints.
Iron the piece flat leaving a quarter inch of the lining print showing on the top and bottom.
If you wish to not have this accent just make both your pieces 10.5 x 13 as shown above.
Now fold this piece in half with the outside print showing.
Pull the large piece you already made back out and find the center mark. Place your pocket with main fabric right side up. Making sure that the fold line matches the center mark.
From both of the outside edges mark with a removable pen 3.5” and draw a line across the pocket from top to bottom.
Pin the pocket in place so that it does not move, and sew across the lines you just created.
Make sure to start and stop where the pocket trim starts and stops. Do not sew past the pocket you are creating.
Now you can refer back to Jeni’s pattern here

for finishing the bag.
Before you close it up come back for instructions on inserting a cardboard bottom to make the bag stand on its own.
Making the cardboard bottom
Measure the bottom of your bag. If you followed Jeni’s pattern this should
be close to about 6.75 x 3
Cut a piece of cardboard measuring 6.75 x 3 and then round off the pointy corners like this (see photo below)
Insert this piece into the bottom before closing up the bag.
.
Push this all the way to the bottom of the bag and then close it up. Your bag should now look like this
Your pocket is now finished. Please refer to Jeni’s Pattern for finishing it up.

I hope this was clear enough for everyone feel free to ask any questions about these pocket steps anytime.
If you would like this bag to be washable I would suggest a heavy interfacing rather than cardboard at the bottom of the bag.
Thanks you for taking the time to read my tutorial.
